7-1 SERVICING INFORMATION TROUBLESHOOTING ENGINE Complaint Symptom and possible causes Remedy Engine does not start, or is hard to start. Engine stalls easily. Noisy engine. Slipping clutch Engine idles poorly. Compression too low 1. Excessively worn cylinder or piston rings. 2. Stiff piston ring in place. 3. Gas leaks from the joint in crankcase, cylinder or cylinder head. 4. Damaged reed valve. 5. Spark plug too loose. 6. Broken, cracked or otherwise failed piston. Plug not sparking 1. The battery has been connected the wrong way round in the system, so that it is being charged in the reverse direction. 1. Dirty container top and sides. 2. Battery is too old. Check the magneto and regulator/rectifier circuit connections, and make necessary adjustments to obtain specified charging operation. Replace the battery, and correct the charging system.
