NFHD Modular Duplex Filter System Pressures to 360 psi Flows to 450 gpm 4 Ports PPLICTIONS HYDC NFHD Return Line Filters are designed for use on hydraulic power units, machine tools, plastics injection molding equipment, and hydraulic test equipment. These filters are designed to be directly mounted in the return line for filtration of solids from hydraulic fluids. Modular design makes these filters especially suitable for high flow applications. PRODUCT FETURES The NFHD has a ductile iron head lid with steel housing. Cavities for clogging indicators are standard. ll models have an air bleed valve (vent) installed in the lid. Single large element with no leak points for highest efficiency and dirt capacity Lid with swing bolts for fast servicing without tools Drain port (Far side) SE 12 (3/4 ) Clogging Indicator for local and remote signals FILTER ELEMENT HYDC NFHD Filters are available with disposable Betamicron BN3HC elements having 250 psid collapse pressure and absolute ratings of 3, 5, 10, and 20 micron. HYDC NFHD Filters are also available with cleanable wire screen (W/HC) elements having a 250 psid collapse pressure and nominal ratings of 25, 74, and 149 micron. For applications which do not require fine filtration, Model 1300 disposable HYDC (P/HC) Polyester elements may be selected. Polyester elements have 45 psid collapse pressure and nominal ratings of 10 and 20 microns. Betamicron /quamicron (BN/M) elements are available for applications requiring both water removal and absolute 3 or 10 micron filtration. quamicron (M) elements have a 40 micron absolute rating and a 145 psid collapse pressure. ll filter media is supported to achieve flow fatigue resistance. Proper support of the filter media also provides high Beta Ratio values (particle removal efficiency) even at high differential pressures. The efficiency of many competitive elements drastically deteriorates as the element clogs and differential pressure increases over the life of the element. High quality epoxy adhesive is used to bind the end caps to the media and to bond the seam of the media. ll elements available for HYDC NFHD filters have the bypass valve built into the filter element. s a result, a new bypass valve is provided each time the element is changes, making it less likely that a bypass valve will stick open, jam, or fail through fatigue.

Consequently, they should be installed in off-line filters when possible. Whether located in an off-line loop or return line, care should be taken to size the NFHD adequately, according to the Guidelines below. In some cases, it may be necessary to increase the number of housings beyond that required for dirt removal, especially when: Water contamination is a serious, persistent problem Maximum water retention is desired Cost savings resulting from longer equipment and fluid life often justify a filtration system that is optimal for both dirt and water removal. The elements have an absolute rating of ß 40 ³100 for particulate filtration, but are intended primarily for water removal. Guidelines Retained Flow Per Water Per Size 2600: Element (1 Element (2 Highest Capacity 30 gpm (or less) 2.3 Quarts Intermediate Capacity 100 gpm 2.0 Quarts Maximum llowable Flow 230 gpm 1.6 Quarts Size 1300: Highest Capacity 15 gpm (or less) 1.2 Quarts Intermediate Capacity 50 gpm 1.0 Quarts Maximum llowable Flow 115 gpm 0.8 Quarts Notes: 1) Flow per element depends on the number of elements in essembly; e.g. if an NFHD 7800 handles 300 gpm, flow per element is 100 gpm. 2) Capacity based on mineral oil at 141 SUS, assuming 20 or more passes of fluid through filter. Capacity is moderately lower at elevated viscosity. 7

Sizing quamicron Filters Water Removal Needs The amount of water that can be removed from a system depends on the total volume of oil and percentages of saturated and unsaturated water expressed in parts per million, or PPM, where 1,000 PPM = 0.1%. Water content may be established by evaluating a representative sample of fluid. HYDC s Fluid nalysis Program provides information on water content, as well as the level of particulate contamination. Example Based on 1,000 Gallon Tank Water Content: PPM Gallons Quarts Total 1,000 1.0 4.0 Saturated 300 0.3 1.2 Unsaturated 700 0.7 2.8 Two size 2600 elements would remove the 2.8 quarts of free and emulsified water. Example 1 Conditions: Return line filter, 115 gpm flow Viscosity of 150 SUS Single 10 µm Betamicron /quamicron filter is adequate for particle removal (NFHD 2600) Selection: n NFHD 2600 filter is acceptable if water removal is secondary. 115 gpm is near the maximum for the quamicron element. n NFHD 7800 or 10400 is recommended if water removal is important. The flow then is 38 gpm or less through each element. n NFHD 7800 or NFHD 10400 is an economical option. Conditions: Example 2 Off-line filter loop 50 gpm flow Lube oil at 400 SUS viscosity Single 3 µm Betamicron /quamicron filter is adequate for particle removal (NFHD 2600) Selection: n NFHD 2600 filter provides satisfactory water removal but not maximum efficiency. n NFHD 5200 reduces flow to 25 gpm per element, thereby maximizing water removal efficiency and rate. Best choice is the 5200 if water is a serious problem. n NFHD 5200 is an economical option. 8

Other Products from HYDC s Filtration Line Filtration Solutions For Mobile Equipment lthough there is great diversity in mobile equipment designs, the common demand in the industry for improved performance has resulted in systems growing in complexity and cost. Precision hydraulic components variable displacement pumps and motors, load control valves, and proportional controls are increasingly applied to enhance machine power, speed and versatility. Higher operating pressures in excess of 6,000 psi are increasing in usage in order to generate higher force and torque from a smaller and lighter package. s fluid power systems are built to function more precisely at higher pressures, protection against wear and malfunction becomes vital. HYDC s range of filtration products are designed to provide the necessary level of protection to maintain the efficiency, useful life and safety of high performance fluid power systems. BETFIT Filter Elements Condensed Filter Catalog Filtration Technology Request catalog # 02069743 BETFIT Filter Elements HYDC manufactures high quality filter elements that are dimensionally similar to other manufacturer's elements and will fit interchangeably into their filter housings. This catalog lists the interchange elements and the models which they replace and is organized by manufacturer. Even When your hydraulic or lube oil system doesn t have a HYDC filter assembly, it doesn t mean that you cannot benefit from our Betamicron Element technology. The high beta ratios and leading dirt holding capacities of these elements extend service life and provide a greater price to maintenance cost ratio than elements from other manufacturers. Request catalog # 02070365 Condensed Filter Catalog This condensed catalog serves as a quick reference guide for selecting HYDC filters. The models are divided into high, medium, and low pressure groups. Charts then describe each filter in the group. Each model description includes mounting method, maximum operating pressure, maximum flow rates, number of sizes and connection size range, flow path, clogging indicator type, and a brief description of features and benefits. General information about clogging indicators, element types, breathers, and filler breathers is also included. Request catalog # 02068118 Filtration Technology HYDC Filter Technology is the result of many years of research, development and performance evaluation both in test stands and actual applications. HYDC s Filter Division produces a complete range of filters. This range includes in-line, in-tank, inside-tank, direct mount, and manifold mount, modular stacking filters. lso available are duplex models for systems requiring continuous operation. This catalog provides a general overview and photos of HYDC filter families with information on pressure and flow ratings, and mounting types. It serves as a handy reference to select the appropriate series of filter(s) for the application in need of filtration.
