Testing not only can be financially prohibitive, but it can slow time to market and present many technical challenges. Personnel safety and arc flash Personnel safety continues to be one of the key concerns for end users in the market today. In the past several years, many safety standards have been adopted around the world to address the problems related to arc flash including NFPA 70E in North America, TR 61641 and IEC 62271-200 in Europe and other local standards like Annex ZD in Australia. Eaton has answers to address all of these standards and offers both products and services important to the user. Our licensed platforms have been tested and exceed the requirements of the standards, that s just one step towards building a safe facility. The standards address the performance of the equipment during an arc flash, with all of the doors securely latched or closed, but in reality most accidents occur when the equipment is being serviced. At Eaton we take a proactive approach of prevent rather than cure when addressing arc flash hazards. First, we recommend a system study to determine the risk classification where the equipment is installed. Our engineering services team offers this analysis in addition to other power systems studies to improve system reliability and safety. By partnering with Eaton you have access to one of the largest teams of power systems engineers in the industry. Second, we have patented features that limit or prevent risky activity. For instance, on xenergy TM XW, a light indicates the presence of hazardous voltage inside the cubicle, interlocks prevent removal in an energized state and an IP21 barrier prevents access until the unit is safely de-energized. On our xgear TM medium voltage equipment, positive interlocks on the grounding switch and cubicle doors prevent unsafe operation. Third, to further increase personnel safety, we offer intelligent products which can limit the amount of arc flash by reducing breaker clearing times during maintenance. Our Arcflash Reduction Maintenance System TM, available in our medium voltage relays, low voltage air circuit breakers (ACB), and molded case circuit breakers (MCCB) is a unique offering only available from Eaton. This maintenance mode employs the use of a separate analog circuit in the breaker s trip unit to reduce clearing times while work is being performed on the switchboard.
