Rail energy efficiency and innovation Driver: 10-15% of total cost of ownership for modern railway fleets Barrier: Realizing energy saving potentials requires system thinking Barrier: Energy savings in railway operation is about integration of (IT) systems as well as procedures and routines among staff from operator, infra-manager, maintenance, planning and political level Banekonference 09.05.2012 Macroplan 3
What energy is energy used for? Traction Non-traction (comfort) Preheating Cleaning Hibernating Banekonference 09.05.2012 Macroplan 4

DSB 2011: Train km: (Intercity and regional only) 38.194.000 km Network size: 1.668 km Employees: 9.500 Train drivers: 1.400 Train energy costs: 507M DKR Units: Push-pull: 32 DMU: 194 EMU: 44 Control car: 25 Total: 295 GreenSpeed: 215 (75%) DSB HQ Side 14
GreenSpeed saves energy In DSB first measurements show: 8% traction energy savings (IR4) 5% total energy savings 35 mill. DKK per year 100% operational since March 22nd Side 15
GreenSpeed is wellinformed For GreenSpeed to be able to give recommendations it needs a set of essential data in addition to knowledge about the current position. The data can either come from already established data sources within the infrastructure company or from the operator. If data is not available, there are solutions to manually supply the system with required data. Tools are also available to collect infrastructure data like track locations and speed limits as well as practical train characteristics. Side 16

Fleet status and reports Each train reports it s status every second to the land based server. Exact knowledge of each trains position Real-time precise passenger information onboard the train and at the stations Give feedback to time table planners Realtime energy reports Banekonference 09.05.2012 Cubris and DSB
