1 CASE Driving and Maintenance. Sme tips n driving and lking after yur Maxitrak/Accucraft 1 Case tractin engine. Once yu have taken yur mdel frm the packaging it will need a mechanical check ver t make sure it is in gd wrking cnditin. (Sme mdels can get a rugh ride n their way t yu s blts can cme lse!) Within the bx yu will find: 1 x tractin engine munted n wden base. Tl set including: 1 x large syringe (biler water filler) 1 x small syringe (lubricatr filler) 2 x Syringe extensin pipes (clear silicne) Small Allen key Spare grub screws Biler & gas tank test certificates Give yur mdel a gd lk ver and tighten all lse blts, pay particular attentin t the frnt Perch Bracket hlding the axel t the smke bx, there are 6 blts that can cme lse. Using the Allen keys prvided pay attentin t the flywheel, rear wheels & gearing t make sure nthing has cme lse, nce yu are satisfied all parts are tight it is a gd idea t turn ver the mtin freely by turning the flywheel, t rll the mdel back and frth freely (with clutch disengaged), check steering wrm & gear and fit the steering chain. Start by putting the blts thrugh the last link in the steering chain, use M2 by 14 steel screws, ne in each chain. Lay the engine n its side and push the Cpyright 2015 Maxitrak ltd maxitrak.cm
blt thrugh the hle in the end f the steering crss shaft, secure with an M2 steel nut. The chains wrap ppsite ways rund the steering crss shaft, the left hand ne (steering wrm side) ges half a turn ver the tp f the shaft while the right side ne ges half a turn under the shaft. The chains then crss under the biler, ging left chain t right side f the frnt axle and right chain t left side f the frnt axle. They are held n t the axle with a steel wire clip, ging thrugh the hle in the axle near the wheel. Fit the clip t allw a little lseness in the chain mving it alng frm link t link as required. Try the steering checking that the frnt axle ges easily frm left t right and is nt s tight as t strain the chain. Yur mdel shuld nw be ready fr its first steam up! Sme tips n driving and lking after yur Maxitrak/Accucraft Case tractin engine. Befre starting yu will need, water, prpane/ butane gas, steam il, lighter, clths r tissues. Water, yur engine will run n almst any fresh water, but in hard water areas we recmmend, rain water r water frm a cndenser tumble drier. Gas,The best gas t use is prpane, butane mix thugh the engine will run n just butane. Gas lighter refills can be used direct but the cans sld fr hand held blwlamps r camping stves are mre ecnmical. Fr these yu will need an adaptr that screws n t the tp f the can t match up t the filler valve n the engine. Oil, Use nly steam il in the lubricatr, d nt use gear il as the additives in these ils will cme ut in the steam and attack the seals etc. Ordinary car engine il, chain il r gear il can be used n all mving parts & bearings, pay particular attentin t the crank, valve gear, axles and wheels. Nte: in use the whle engine gets ht s it is a gd idea t use steam il fr everything, it is sticky and messy but as a wrking mdel lubricatin is essential! Lighting, A lighter f the type used fr gas ckers is a very gd idea and will save burnt fingers! Matches can be used with care but are a pr substitute when it cmes t relighting a ht burner. Diagram, Study the diagram s yu are familiar with the cntrls and wrking parts f the engine befre firing up at the end f this manual. Use clths r kitchen rll fr wiping dwn spilt il r water and fr a final clean up after a run. Starting the run Remve the biler filler plug and fill the biler with water. Watch the level f water in the water gauge, fill t abut three quarters up the glass, replace the filler plug. Make sure the gas valve is clsed befre filling the gas tank. D this in a well-ventilated area well away frm any flame. NOTE: NO SMOKING. If using the larger gas canisters start by screwing n the adaptr and then invert the canister and press the end f the adaptr n the gas filler valve. Liquid gas is transferred frm the canister t the lcs wn gas tank, as this happens gas is vented frm the tank t make rm fr the liquid. Venting gas is quite nrmal, make sure there is n flame near by. with the gas. Stp if any ice r frsting appears rund the filler valve. Nte: Several shrt bursts f filling may be better than ne lng ne. When the tank is full and the gas disbursed the burner may be lit, Light the burners by pening the smke bx dr and turning n the gas valve. Yu will hear the gas hissing ut f the burner. Put the lighter in the smke bx and light the gas, it will pp back dwn the biler tubes t the burners. Check that bth the burners are lit and clse the smke bx dr. The nise f the burner is quite different between when the gas is n and when the burner is alight, if yu get used t listening t the difference yu will knw if all is well (burner n) r if yu are abut t run ut f steam (burner ut). Bth burners need t be n, ne will nt necessarily re light the ther and a change in the burner nise may mean a quick lk in the smke bx is required t check bth are perfrming crrectly. There is an air intake adjustment n each burner, mve this t cut the air intake if the burners tend t cut ut n full gas. The burners are mst temperamental when starting the engine s they may need further adjustment nce yu have the engine running. It takes abut five t ten minutes t get steam up s il rund all the mving parts while steam is raised. This shuld include all the fllwing items, valve gear, crsshead, crankshaft bearings, cnnecting rd, gears, back axle bearings, frnt wheels etc. Unscrew the filler cap frm the lubricatr and pen the lubricatr drain tap under the tender. Fill the lubricatr with steam il, clsing the drain when il rather than water cmes ut. Re fit the filler cap when the lubricatr is full. Running the engine When the pressure gauge begins t register the engine can be run. Nte: Check the clutch is nt engaged. Put the reversing lever in t full frward and pen the cylinder drain taps. Nte: remember the case valve gear is ppsite t UK tractrs pull leaver twards yu t g frward! Open the regulatr gently and turn the flywheel. Open cylinder drains, Once the cndensatin is cleared the engine will start t run, it may take a cuple f turns by hand t clear water frm the cylinder. Cntrl the speed with the regulatr t give a steady speed. The engine can be run with the reversing lever mved back t the secnd ntch, this will save a little steam when running light. It is nt necessary t stp befre putting the engine in reverse thugh it might need a turn n the flywheel t get it running in the ppsite directin. If the engine is t be run light the burner can be turned dwn t give a lnger run. If the burner is left n full pressure will increase. When a little mre pressure has built up the engine can be driven. Lift the engine speed and engage the clutch. Clse the regulatr t stp the engine. Set the steering s the engine drives in a circle, Nte: avid hitting any bstacles! The drive t the back wheels can be discnnected when the drive blt in the hub are unscrewed. If the engine is running light n a hard cncrete r tar surface ne f the rear wheels shuld have the drive discnnected t ease steering. If the engine is run n a lse surface, earth r grass, bth wheels shuld be driven. If yu are hauling a scale lad r a Cpyright 2015 Maxitrak ltd maxitrak.cm
persn then bth wheels will need t be driven even n a hard surface. NOTE: If the engine steers erratically r appears t be struggling check the drive pins are crrectly set. If the engine is started at high pressure r run at high speed the burner will shw a tendency t blw ut (listen fr a change in burner sund) When passenger hauling yu are wrking the engine hard and it might be difficult t avid this situatin. It is dwn t the drivers technique, burner air adjustment and keeping a gd ear ut fr the state f the burners. Starting is the mst difficult thing t d, set the engine and riding car ging light and then jump abard if all else fails! D nt attempt hills either up r dwn. NOTE: It is mst imprtant that riding cars have ball race bearings and are f a light cnstructin. Yu are asking the little engine t d a well ver scale jb when pulling a full size persn. Keep an eye n the water level in the biler, after abut thirty minutes r s the water level will be lw in the gauge glass and the run must be stpped. Turn ff the burner and allw the steam pressure t drp. T repeat the run wait fr the biler t lse all pressure, remve the water filler valve carefully and re fill with water. Tp up the gas tank, drain and refill the lubricatr, light the burner and start again. As the engine is warm pressure will be up much quicker secnd time. We can supply an adaptr t allw biler filling under steam, this will reduce the dwn time but the burner must be ff when refilling the gas tank in any case. Yu will need 5 t 20 PSI t run the engine 20 t 40 t drive with light lad 40 t 75 t d passenger hauling After the run Oil water and gas can be left in the engine after the run but the biler shuld be drained fr lng-term strage r if there is any chance f the water in the biler freezing. Wipe dwn all ily r dirty parts and plish the brass as desired. The engine will sn assume the patina f use s typical f a wrking steam engine thugh sme wners like t keep their engines in as new cnditin. Lng-term maintenance Clutch adjustment. The clutch is factry set, this will wear and will need adjustment, the centre screw thread will adjust the she clearance, if the clutch is slipping n the flywheel first clean the flywheel and shes f all dirt, il and any cntaminatin. Disengage the clutch and und adjustment lcking nut, turn the she adjustment screw ¼ turn at a time, d this n bth sides tgether, yu can check the clutch with the mdel cld, remve bth drive blts and engage clutch and spin the flywheel, if the clutch slips adjust the she clearance until it lcks in place and grips the flywheel. D nt ver adjust the she clearances as this will make the clutch disengage by itself and yu will lse drive. The tlerance is critical s a little trial and errr will be need here. Use tap water in a new biler t build a thin layer f fur which will help settle the biler. T prevent further build up use rainwater r distilled water, r de fur the biler ccasinally using rdinary kettle r steam irn de-scaler. D nt allw the biler t run dry r it may be damaged. A hydraulic test t 150 lbs pressure shuld be dne every fur years, yu will need special equipment t d this r jin a club wh will d this fr yu. Health and Safety Please be aware this is a wrking live steam mdel, many safety issues are the same as n a full size engine. HEAT, all parts f the biler, cylinder and smke bx are very ht and shuld nt be tuched. MOVING PARTS, the cylinder, valve gear and drive gears shuld nt be tuched when mving. EXHAUST, steam, ht il and ht water may be sht ut f the chimney, especially when starting. FUEL, the prpane/butane gas fuel needs t be treated with respect, especially when filling. NO SMOKING. CHILDREN, because it is small there is a strng temptatin fr yungsters t tuch, it is part f the drivers jb t stp them befre they cme t any harm.
