EFIE Wideband O2 (Electronic Fuel Injector Enhancer) Installation & Operating Instructions. The EFIE is not intended to be a fuel saver by itself. The EFIE is designed to be used in conjunction with fuel saver devices, such as a hydrogen gas electrolyzer, a fuel vapor production unit, or other devices that increase the efficiency of the burn. EFIE Wideband O2. This EFIE will work with all wideband zirconia type of oxygen sensors (Not AFR). All oxygen sensors that were developed before catalytic converter need to own dedicated EFIE device. Oxygen sensors that were developed after catalytic converter do not need EFIE devices, because they are only used by ECU to monitor converter fuel efficiency. 1. Features. 1. Soft Start Feature slowly increases the voltages offset when powered ON (For example: O2 sensor warm up delay). 2. Option to disable Soft Start Feature. 3. LED light indicates when the power is ON. 4. Additional Terminal Block makes testing the voltages (offset, input and output) simple. 5. Special circuit design eliminates variance of actual voltage output, input and offset when using voltmeter. 6. Adjustable offset. Range is adjustable from 0v to 2.5V and from 0v to 500mV (0.5V). 7. Normal connection from O2/MAP/MAF sensors to the ECU (vehicle computer) when power OFF. 8. Fine tune with a 24 turn potentiometer. 1

9. Low current consumption: 25mA (0.025A). 10. Low temperature sensitivity +/- 2mV (0.002V). 11. Operating temperature: -35F to 220F (-37C to 105C). 12. Small size: 2" x 1.5" x 0.6 (51mm x 38mm x 15mm). 2. Installation. Installation is the easiest if you have a Haynes, Clymer or Chilton manual for your car. If not, then you can buy a wiring diagram from sites like http://www.ahdol.com. Or, go to the following URL: http://www.autozone.com/shopping/vehicleselect1.htm Then: 1. Locate your car s year, make and model. 2. Select: Repair Info at the left side of the screen. 3. Select: Vehicle Repair Guides, Chassis Electrical, Wiring Diagrams. If you have a problem with getting the wiring diagram, you can attempt to identify the wires yourself. Wires of O2 Sensor signal out (Vs) black grey red black sign in (Ip) red red black blue sign in (Vs/Ip) yellow green yellow yellow heater + grey light blue grey grey heater - white red white white Rcal (optional) green green green green Rcal = laser trimmed calibration resistor only for 6-wire wideband sensors. Even if you have found all the color marks, it is recommended to read the technique written below. 2

= 2.1 = Note: Instead of taking a chance by stripping insulation, you can take two sewing needles or poster pins. Turn ignition OFF. Pierce isolation so that the needles are touching the wire inside the isolation. Now you can measure the voltage. Attach a minus of multi-meter to a minus of the car Battery. Turn multi-meter to DC mode Turn ignition ON. Don t disconnect the Oxygen sensor plug. Wait for 3-5 minutes. Use multi-meter to probe the voltage between a minus of the car battery and five wires of a Wideband O2 Sensor. If you see changes from 0.3 to 4.9 Volt between minus of car battery and one of the five wires of Wideband O2 sensor then that wire is a signal wire of the Wideband O2 sensor. 3

3. Locate 12 Volt power and Ground. If you now install this EFIE, then you should already have installed a fuel saver device. Therefore, I think that you have already found the +12 volt and the ground (minus). The +12 volt is the best way for transferring from the fuel saver device. The reason which is necessary to connect +12 Volt of EFIE to the +12 Volt of the fuel saver device is very simple: when you turn ON fuel saver device then simultaneously you turn ON EFIE and when you turn OFF the fuel saver device then simultaneously you turn OFF the EFIE. The EFIE works only when the fuel saver device works. In any case you can use an ignition switched power source +12 Volt to the EFIE. The EFIE will shut OFF when you shut OFF ignition key. If you previously have not established the fuel saver device, these resources can help: http://www.bulldogsecurity.com/wireing%20diagrams2.htm http://www.the12volt.com/ Note: O2 sensor heater wire can not be used because in some cases ECU (vehicle computer) will cut the power to the O2 sensor during the trip. The ground can be the vehicle body (chassis ground), engine block or ground from another device. Do not use oxygen sensor as a ground. Test the resistance (turn multi-meter to Resistance mode) between ground wire, which you have found and battery negative terminal. If it is < 10 ohm you can use it. 4

Turn multi-meter to Resistance mode 4. Placing EFIE. Before placing EFIE in the car place jumpers as shown in picture 1. Installation of jumpers should be carried out only when the power is OFF. Picture 1 5

The time of delay is approximately 5-6 minutes (Soft Start Feature slowly increases the voltage offset when powered ON, to allow the computer to have time to adjust for the changes.) The best place for the installation of the EFIE is a place where the EFIE will be warm, dry and accessible to adjustment. As a last resort, the EFIE can be placed under the hood, but you should take care of water resistance and humidity resistance. We recommend that is better to be installed under a dash. The EFIE can be attached in the chosen place with Velcro. Due to this, it is necessary for you to pick up a suitable plastic box and attach the EFIE inside with the Velcro. 5. Connect EFIE wires. Picture 2 Note: During connection and the lining of wires execute some simple rules: while lining the wires try not to lay wires near to details of the car which will be hot during the working of the car. At connection of wires don t use crimp connectors. Solder wires, and then seal them with silicone, shrink-wrap or with liquid tape. 6

Turn ignition OFF. Connect wire from the car ground (read section 3) to the EFIE connector (3) shown in Picture 2. Connect +12 Volt wire (read section 3) to the EFIE connector (4) shown in Picture 2. Cut the Oxygen Sensor signal wire on the car side of the connector. Connect wire from Oxygen Sensor side to EFIE connector (2) and wire from ECU side to EFIE connector (1). Remember, to solder wires and seal them for prevention of corrosion. 6. Operation The time of delay is approximately 5-6 minutes (Soft Start Feature slowly increases the voltage offset when powered ON to allow the computer time to adjust for the changes.) Now look at the picture below. We see that after 5 minutes, the voltage is equal 189 millivolt, and after 6 minutes 193 millivolt. The final voltage should be 200 millivolt. As shown by the graph, during 5-6 minutes the voltage of Soft Start Feature will reach a point in the 95% threshold. The last 5% threshold will be reached in the following of 5-6 minutes. (The data on each device can differ a little). Soft Start Feature 200 150 mv 100 50 0 0:00 1:00 2:00 3:00 4:00 5:00 6:00 7:00 8:00 9:00 10:00 11:00 Minutes Adjustments should only be made when the EFIE is powered ON and the engine is warm and running. Do not make any adjustments without the use of a volt-meter. Touch your meter leads to the In test pin (5), Out test pin (6), 7

Reference Voltage test pin (7) on the EFIE to read the voltage while adjusting. Picture 3 Note: For the Ground you can use a screw number 3 in Picture 2. Variable resistor adjustment range is approximately 24 turns and from about 0 to 500 millivolts (0.5 Volts). Step of adjustment up to 1 millivolt. It is not necessary to wait time between adjustments. Start by turning the adjustment screws counterclockwise (Leaner) to increase the voltage offset to the computer. Turning the screws clockwise (Richen) will decrease the voltage offset. Remember that it is the subtractor, as increase of the voltage offset causes reduction of output voltage from EFIE and on the contrary. Be careful not to over turn as they may be damaged, however, they do have a built in clutch and are quite forgiving. Also remember about Soft Start. When you turn ON the EFIE it is necessary to wait for 5-6 minutes. During this time, we know that a reference voltage will reach 95 %. The others 5 % will take 5-6 minutes more, but we do not need to wait during this time and we can simply remove a jumper (shown by red color in the picture below). Thus, it is not necessary to switch OFF the EFIE. This jumper disables the Soft Start Feature and the voltage reaches 100% instantly. Now it is possible to make an adjustment. After performance of adjustment it is necessary to return a jumper in an initial place. 8

If you notice any performance issues or your "check engine" light comes on, you've likely set the offset too high. You will need to lower the offset (turn clockwise) and reset the vehicles computer. This can usually be done by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. Please refer to your vehicle owner s manual for the recommended procedure. 7. Range Adjustments The range is pre-set at 200 millivolts. You should not have to adjust the range. If you do need to adjust the range, connect minus of your multi-meter to the Ground (you can use a screw number 3 in the Picture 2) and plus of your multi-meter to Reference Voltage test pin (screw number 7 in the Picture 3) of the EFIE while making these adjustments. Counterclockwise will increase (Leaner) and clockwise will decrease (Richen) the range. Do not overlook about a jumper which disable Soft Start Feature. Measurements: Reference Voltage minus of Multi-meter to a screw number 3 in the Picture 2, plus of Multi-meter to screw number 7 in the Picture 3. O2 sensor output signal minus of Multi-meter to a screw number 3 in the Picture 2, plus of Multi-meter to screw number 5 in the Picture 3. Output signal from EFIE to ECU (vehicle computer) minus of Multimeter to a screw number 3 in the Picture 2, plus of Multi-meter to screw number 6 in the Picture 3. Remember that your meter is a load and your reading will go down a few millivolts while connected. The special circuit eliminates this lack and allows us to not think about it. One condition: measure the voltage only on special test pins ( Ground (you can use a screw number 3 in the Picture 2), In test pin (5 in the Picture 3), Out test pin (6 in the Picture 3), Reference Voltage test pin (7 in the Picture 3) on the EFIE to read the voltage while adjusting). Note: when the EFIE is powered OFF, it makes the connection between the oxygen sensor and the ECU (vehicle computer), the same as it was before the EFIE was installed. If you ever have need to reconnect the oxygen sensor directly to the computer, just turn the EFIE OFF (disconnect a wire +12 Volt). 9

The exact voltage is 2.5 volts to the ECU. Always make an adjustment EFIE at the connected multi-meter. You never should be in extreme measures. I recommend beginning with 200 millivolts. The process of adjusting the EFIE is trial and error. Watch for symptoms of too lean a mix such as rough engine, lack of power, "check engine light" coming on, etc. When these show up, adjust it by turning the adjustment screws clockwise (Richen) until the symptoms go away. Adjustment tip: If you have a high temperature probe, run down the highway with the EFIE turned OFF at least long enough to get the engine up to full operating temperature, and note the temp of your exhaust pipe (near the exhaust manifold). As you increase your voltage offset, this temperature may increase. Don't let it raise more than 180 degrees from your initial test. 10
