If there is a risk of cotact, provide safety measures such as a cover or a system that uses sesors that will activate a emergecy stop before cotact is made.. Use a balace circuit i which lurchig of the pisto is take ito cosideratio. If the lock is applied at a desired positio of a stroke ad compressed air is applied to oly oe side of the cylider, the pisto will lurch at a high speed the momet the lock is disegaged. I such a situatio, there is a risk of ijury to humas, or equipmet damage. To prevet the pisto from lurchig, use a balace circuit such as the recommeded peumatic circuit (back pages 3 ad 4). If a air-hydro fie lock cylider is used, make sure to operate the lock portio through air pressure. Selectio Warig Refer to the followig criteria for the maximum load i the locked state, ad set. 1. Note that the holdig force (maximum static load) meas the maximum capability of holdig a static load that is ot accompaied by vibratio or impact uder the coditio that o load is applied. To esure brakig force, the maximum load must be set as described below. O For costat static loads, such as for drop prevetio: 35% or less of the holdig force (maximum static load) Note) For applicatios such as drop prevetio, cosider situatios i which the air source is shut off, ad make selectios based o the holdig force of the sprig locked state. Do ot use the peumatic lock for drop prevetio purposes. O Whe kietic eergy acts upo the cylider, such as whe effectig a itermediate stop: Whe kietic eergy acts upo the cylider i a locked state, there are costraits i terms of the allowable kietic eergy. Therefore, refer to the allowable kietic eergy o page 4. Furthermore, eve withi a give allowable kietic eergy level, there is a upper limit to the amout of the load that ca be sustaied. Maximum load at horizotal moutig: 70% or less of the holdig force (Maximum static load) for sprig lock Maximum load at vertical moutig: 35% or less of the holdig force (Maximum static load) for sprig lock. I a locked state, do ot apply impacts, strog vibratios or rotatioal forces. Do ot apply impacts, strog vibratios or rotatioal forces from exteral sources, because this could damage or shorte the life of the lock uit. Warig Selectio 3. The lockig of the fie lock cylider is directioal. Although the fie lock cylider ca be locked i both directios, be aware that the holdig force at pisto rod retracted side decreases approx. 15%. 4. To effect a itermediate stop, take the cylider s stoppig precisio ad overru amout ito cosideratio. ecause the lock is applied by mechaical meas, the pisto will ot stop immediately i respose to a stoppig sigal, but oly after a time lag. This lag determies the amout of the overru of the pisto stroke. Thus, the rage of the maximum ad miimum amouts of the overru is the stoppig precisio. Place the limit switch before the desired stoppig positio, oly i the amout of the overru. The limit switch must have a detectio legth (dog legth) of the overru amout + α. For SM s auto switches, the operatig rage are betwee 4 ad 40 mm. (It varies depedig o a switch model.) Whe the overru amout exceeds this rage, self-holdig of the cotact should be performed at the switch load side. * For stoppig accuracy, refer to page 4. Stop sigal Overru amout 5. I order to further improve stoppig accuracy, the time from the stop sigal to the operatio of the lock should be shorteed as much as possible. To accomplish this, use a device such as a highly resposive electric cotrol circuit or soleoid valve drive by direct curret, ad place the soleoid valve as close as possible to the cylider. 6. e aware that the stoppig accuracy is iflueced by chages i the pisto speed. The variace i the stoppig positio icreases if the pisto speed chages, such as due to load fluctuatios durig the reciprocal movemet of the pisto. Therefore, take measures to esure a costat pisto speed immediately precedig the stoppig positio. Furthermore, the variaces i the stoppig positio icreases whe the pisto is effectig a cushioig stroke or durig acceleratio after startig its movemet. 7. Whe ulockig is performed, if the thrust is applied to the pisto, ulockig will ot be easily doe. To avoid that, esure that ulockig should be performed before the thrust is applied to the pisto. ack page

If there is a large amout of deviatio, the pisto rod could become uevely wor or damaged due to the iertial momet that is created whe the pisto rod is stopped by the lock. I the state i which a load is attached to the cylider, disegage the lock ad adjust the air pressure at the rod side ad the head side of the cylider to obtai a load balace. y maitaiig a proper air balace, the pisto rod ca be preveted from lurchig whe the lock is disegaged.. Adjust the moutig positio of detectios such as those of the auto switches. To effect a itermediate stop, adjust the moutig positio of the auto switch detectio by takig the amout of overru ito cosideratio i relatio to the desired stoppig positio. Warig Peumatic ircuit 1. e certai to use a peumatic circuit which will apply balacig pressure to both sides of the pisto whe i a locked stop. I order to prevet cylider lurchig after a lock stop, whe restartig or whe maually ulockig, a circuit should be used to which will apply balacig pressure to both sides of the pisto, thereby cacelig the force geerated by the load i the directio of pisto movemet.. The effective area of the lock release soleoid valve should be at least 50% of the effective area of the cylider drivig soleoid valve, ad it should be istalled as close to the cylider as possible so that it is closer tha the cylider drivig soleoid valve. If the effective area of the lock release soleoid valve is smaller tha the cylider drivig soleoid valve or if it is istalled at a distace from the cylider, the time required for exhaustig air for releasig the lock will be loger, which may cause a delay i the lockig operatio. The delay i the lockig operatio may result i problems such as icrease of overruig whe performig itermediate stop or emergecy stop durig operatio, or if maitaiig positio from the operatio stop state such as drop prevetio, workpieces may be dropped depedig o the timig of the load actio to the operatio delay of the lock. 3. Avoid backflow of the exhaust pressure whe there is a possibility of iterferece of exhaust air, for example for a commo exhaust type valve maifold. The lock may ot operate properly whe the exhaust air pressure backflows due to iterferece of the exhaust air whe exhaustig air for lock release.
