ZINSSER-MINILAB A Complete Laboratory in a Case The Zinsser-Minilab has been used in many European schools since the late 80s, but has also become a useful tool for the development and testing of new strategies in the industry. Together with the small hotplate, magnetic stirrers and a thermometer it forms a little reaction station. All glass parts are made from class 1 borosilicate glass Screw connectors for rigid but easy assemblies of glass parts Heating block for 3 reactions Vast range of kit components for distillations, extractions, etc. Booklet with a collection of experiments

From Education to Combinatorial Chemistry In the past difficulties have been experienced in teaching experimental chemistry to large groups of pupils in schools equipped with standard laboratory apparatus and glassware. More stringent legislation relating to the handling of chemicals and increased concern over the disposal of chemical waste together with the high costs involved have added to the problems conducting chemical experiments as an integral part of the teaching syllabus. Present-day demands and technology To overcome these difficulties, ZINSSER ANALYTIC, together with Professor Michael Schallies of the Pädagogische Hochschule Heidelberg, Germany, have developed the Minilab system, a complete set of laboratory equipment which solves the problems of teaching science in terms of present-day demands and technology. The Minilab not only meets the requirements of modern experimental chemistry education at school and university, but has also become a useful tool for development and testing of new strategies and methods in leading R&D labs in Combinatorial Chemistry. Time-saving In the miniaturised, specially designed reaction vessels, used in place of large flasks, very small quantities of a substance can be reacted (as little as 1g of a solid and 5ml of a liquid). These cylindrical reaction vessels, made of borosilicate glass, are heated by placing them directly into suitable holes in an aluminium heating block. The contents of the reaction vessel are normally brought to boiling point within five minutes. Thus, the Minilab is also 30-50% faster to use compared to standard methods: faster heating time by using the aluminium blocks, quicker to assemble and quicker to take apart. The reduction in time allows experimental lessons to be carried out with groups of pupils even in a single teaching period. Economical Since only small quantities of reagents and chemicals are required, the Minilab is very economical to use and the problems of waste removal are minimised. Safe The Minilab also has the advantage of being considerably safer than the traditional laboratory techniques and equipment as no open flames are used. Also, smaller amounts of chemicals reduce the risk of accidents. The miniaturised glass components are resistant to breaking with both excess pressure and vacuum. Even if the glassware is dropped breakage is unlikely to occur and risks of accidents resulting from faulty or inadequate operating procedures are greatly reduced. To simplify the connection of the various glass components, the vessels have been manufactured with an external thread to enable them to be simply screwed together using the gas-tight couplings provided. This gives a safe chemical resistant connection which is stable under pressure or vacuum. 2

Easy setup These couplings are so easy to fix that even the most inexperienced beginner in practical chemistry can set up the apparatus. Assembly is as easy and quick as screwing a cap on a small bottle, and the joints and glass are so strong that supporting clamps and stands are not needed. This minimises the teacher and technician support required and avoids student frustration. Versatile Furthermore to enable an experiment to be displayed clearly once it has been set up, the Minilab contains a ferro-magnetic plate to which the apparatus can be attached by magnetic clamps. The Minilab can also be used for preparatory practical work in chemistry. Because the glassware is so universally adaptable every conceivable kind of apparatus can be assembled, enabling standard operations such as distillation to be set up in a variety of ways. Individual Experiments Due to the versatility of the system, the fundamentals of chemistry may be demonstrated by a number of variations involving experiments in parallel and in series rather than a single experiment conducted under one set procedure. This has the added advantage of allowing a pupil to work as an individual, developing and testing his own experimental equipment. The system is also ideal for individualised chemistry teaching, allowing students to conduct to their own experiments and to a large extent being responsible for designing and setting up experiments themselves. Manual The Minilab is supplied together with a detailed instruction manual, written by Professor Schallies. In this manual many experiments are described which can easily be performed with our Minilab in the area of inorganic and organic chemistry in schools and universities. The manual is available in German, English, Spanish and Turkish. 3
