We had President s Page August 2017 a great time at the International Corsa Convention in Independence, Missouri June 27 thru July 1. CMI was well represented by Jack & Chris Bacon, Jim Becker, John Herkenratt, Vince Rohr, Lee Knauf, Chuck Johnson, Dick Mickelson, and Ron & Karen Scott. A big congratulations to our award winners - Dick Mickelson entered his 65 monza four door in the Concours and scored a Bronze award (90.21). Jim Becker received 3rd in class for the Econorun Eric Prosise from Iowa entered the Cole competition - in the Concours, his 65 Monza four door scored a Bronze award (93.81). Eric also brought home 4 other awards in the Rally, Econrun, Autocross and Model Car Concours. Well done everyone, especially those 4 door Corvairs! John's Rampside developed engine problems just into Iowa and after multiple attempted fixes failed was towed to Jim Brandberg's house for repair. Lee's engine developed a knocking noise just into Minnesota but was able to keep driving and was left at Chuck's building in Winnebago to be towed home at a later date. Dick's Monza had some alternator issues putting out to much voltage but was able to stop at a auto parts store to pick up a new voltage regulator. I did not here if the Scott's had any issues with their car. Jim Becker's Corvair made it all the way home without any issues on the back of a trailer. Be sure to plan on coming to next year's convention In Pittsburgh, PA. There was a great turnout at our July membership meeting at the Minnetonka Drive-In. Tony Berbig and Linda Soukup showed up with their just completed Yenko Stinger Clone. Their car was just beautiful with a red urethane paint job with white stripe, 17" mag wheels and a very great sounding engine. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the August membership meeting which will be held at the Peppermint Twist Drive In in Delano on August 8. I would like to welcome the following new members to CMI - Gary Apodaca with a 61 Panel Van, Jerry Audorff with a 63 Rampside, Jeff Longworth with a 65 Corsa Turbo, Lawrence Sklaney with a 66 Monza and Gary Olson with a 69 Monza. Be sure to welcome them to CMI at some of our future events! We have some great events coming up in the next few weeks. First is the North St. Paul Weekly Car Show on Friday July 28 starting at 5 pm. Sunday July 30 from 9am to 4pm is the annual 10,000 Lakes Concours de Elegance at Excelsior Commons on Lake Minnetonka with free parking and shuttle buses. Tickets are $25 and benefit Bridging (http://10000lakesconcours.com). August 12 at 11am is the annual New London to New Brighton Antique Car Run lunch stop at the Buffalo High School in Buffalo, MN. There will also be a car show in the parking lot and a hot lunch will be served in the cafeteria. This is always great fun seeing these 100+ year old antique cars and one Indian motorcycle make the 120 mile Grand Run.Eligibility for the grand run is limited to 1908 and earlier vehicles or any 1 or 2 cylinder vehicles up to 1915. This includes bikes, motorcycles, steam and electric cars. Have a great summer and enjoy driving your Corvairs! Wrench, drive, repeat! Jack Bacon

CORVAIR MINNESOTA July 11, 2017 President Jack Bacon called the meeting to order promptly at 7:01 at the Minnetonka Drive-In in Spring Park. 30 members and guests were in attendance, including Jim Becker s sister Jean from Portland, OR. Jeff Longworth from Park Rapids has been a member for several years but this was his first meeting to attend in person. He has a yellow Los Angeles built 65 Corsa Turbo convertible. Red and yellow were the predominant Corvair colors at tonight s meeting. Tony Berbig & Linda arrived in the freshly completed red Yenko clone, good seeing another car back on the road and looking sharp. Treasurer s Report: June 10 balance $2472 Income $31 Expenses ($254) Current Balance $2248 Motion to approve by Fran Schmit, seconded by Chuck Johnson, motion carried. Secretary s Report: reading due to the venue. OLD BUSINESS: Minutes were approved without June 27 30, 2017: Corsa National Convention in Independence MO. CMI had 14 people in attendance, counting the Prosise family. Dick Mickelson s 65 Monza scored a 90.2 in Concours judging. Excellently managed convention! July 4, 2017: The Delano parade! CJ Schmit led 4 red, white, and blue Corvairs in this year s parade. CMI received special recognition from the parade emcee this year so our efforts are appreciated. As in previous years, this parade attracts tons of kids and is a good time. NEW BUSINESS: Upcoming Activities: July 12: Third Victoria Car Show of the season. Excellent West side event held every other week throughout the summer. July 22: Saturday Bent Brewstillery Car Show. Arrive about noon for judging from 1 4 p.m. 174 Terrace Drive, Roseville--this is about 1 mile north of Rosedale Mall. Please email CJ if you plan to attend. If enough numbers, we will get a club display area. July 28: North St. Paul Weekly Car Show: Corvair Minnesota is the featured marque for this week s show. Arrive about 5 p.m. or after. Parking is down the street west from last year, enter through the alley. Neat event in the East metro! July 30: 10,000 Lakes Concours de Elegance in Excelsior. Maybe we ll see a Corvair here one day? August 8, 2017: CMI Membership Meeting at the Peppermint Twist in Delano. August 12: 31 st New London to New Brighton Run. CMI will once again meet at Buffalo High School about 11 a.m. and enjoy seeing the cars and motorcycles entering and departing from their lunch break, along with any maintenance needed. Fran was contacted and we may have an opportunity to be featured in their parade once again. Joe Schwert volunteered to coordinate cars and drivers. Let Joe know if you have a convertible available AND/OR if you are willing to drive someone else s excess convertible. Also, Rampsides may be used. Summer 2018: Corsa National Convention, Pittsburgh, PA, 11 months to get prepared. Summer 2019: Corsa National Convention, St. Charles, IL, 23 months. Summer 2020: Corsa National Convention, San Diego, CA, 35 months, 1978 miles. Meeting adjourned at 7:18. Respectfully submitted, Chuck Johnson (2)

Nostalgia Tech Session at the MUM! Recalling informal parking lot technical sessions which often lasted the entire evening, we are returning to the MUM parking lot for our September membership meeting. The theme is simple things Everyone can do to their Corvairs, ranging from basic maintenance unique to Corvairs to simple upgrades which will increase your cruising enjoyment. Our goal this year remains getting more Corvairs on the road. If you have a problem which has you stumped, or makes you hesitant to drive your car further or more frequently, drop Jim Becker or any Board member a note. Please don t just tell us, our memories could use a little restoration, too! PART II: Ron Cowden donated a number of parts, tech manuals, Corvair books, and shop test equipment. We will have a sale/auction to dispose of this inventory. As you might guess by looking at Ron s 65, his take-off parts are very nice. The topics and details are still fluid, so watch for details in next month s Leeky Seel, but mark your calendars to be sure to keep September 12 open!....and order good weather! ******************************************************************************************************************* Correction It was stated in Old Business (in the July SEEL ed) that Jerry Audorff of Mahtomedi joined with a very orange Rampside and I thought perhaps I could rebut. First, he s younger than I am so I m not so sure he s old business although I suppose his kids might think so. Second, he has a very white Rampside. It s pretty cool with blackwall tires and truck wheelcovers, it looks like it s ready to haul a load or do some work. Very nice solid condition being restored one section at a time. The orange and white one belongs to Ken Engler from Forest Lake so they re sort of neighbors almost, relatively speaking. The other new member mentioned with the Van, Gary Apodacca is a relative of Jerry s I believe. Seems to me he got the Van from another relative out west, Washington or one of those I think. Sounds pretty nice and I m anxious to see it. Jerry Audorff s father was a big Corvair guy, one of those crazy as a loon types with like a dozen, maybe even more. Can you imagine? I think he belonged to Corvair Minnesota. When he passed, Jerry got the Rampside, his sister got a yellow 64 Monza convertible and his brother got a maroon 63 Spyder coupe. So they are quite the Corvair enthusiasts and can be found most Fridays at the North Saint Paul car show. Sort of a new old family. NOF? Jim Brandberg (3)

Well a time or two ago I told you about my laser guided setup for doing the LM alignment remember? So, I got my hands on the marked-up 2x4 and the laser and went through a little pre-alignment testing. I wanted to be certain the other three wheels were sitting correctly before I zeroed in on the left-rear where I was working. I simply stuck the spring-loaded 2x4 against each wheel and put the red dot where it needed to be and made certain everybody else was OK. Then I got down by the toe-in plate, which I had left a little loose, and sighted in the left rear wheel. It was toeing out just a bit so I got a big screwdriver to crowbar the plate in a bit. The dot went too far in - - this is all happening as I m lying on the floor next to the wheel - - so I look at the red dot while my hand is on the tool and tweek it just a bit out. The red dot moves exactly as I want it exactly as I m doing it. How much better can it get. I tightened the bolts and knew I was finished. That toe-in is set correctly! I had left the big ½ bolt through that Torque-Arm bushing just snug so that it would not take a wind like the pitman arm bushing usually gets, and with the 66 down on all fours, I tightened that bolt as well. I had to use my spring compressors to get the spring back in as I m too old and feeble to strong arm one of those babies anymore, but the spring compressors did the job nicely. The bottom of the shock went back on nicely, again using the power of hydraulics is a wonderful thing! I suppose if I had a clicker to control the hydraulic jack that would be one better! When Peter comes over again I will bleed the brakes. Power brakes bleed the same as regular ones and us old guys with funny knees actually need that power assist can you believe it?!?! Fran (4)

General Membership meeting June 13, 2017 Wagner s Drive In As usual the food was good and attendance was as well (although not many Corvairs). We discussed the upcoming schedule of events and the upcoming Corsa convention in Independence Missouri. Picture supplied by President Jack Bacon (is this vehicle on his Wish list? (5)

CMI General Membership meeting Minnetonka Drive In July 11, 2017

My need for a mud flap The other day I was washing my 64 and noticed a pattern of mud up along the underside of the rear fenders. It looked a bit like this. Not that we have a great deal of mud to drive through anymore but whatever flies up does hit right on the paint and I thought I could do this little bit just a little bit better. Remember mud flaps? Not the big gaudy naked lady things, but a discreet little fellow hiding down there just behind the tire. So, I went looking and some guys in china, where else, had a set for $20 and I ordered them. I just wanted the rears but did get all four in a set. Here s one of them. The idea was to stick it right on the end of the rear wheel brightmetal. However, this black plastic thing doesn t have the same bling the CORVAIR wheel-well trim has. So, I thought I would brighten it up just a bit. Like this: That s not a lot of bling but when I slipped it under the fender I had to say it was OK. From the rear this is what the other guy will see. And as I pass him up the rear quarter view would be something like this shot on the right. All of this just to keep the dirt and gravel off my pretty paint. You will all (y all?) be able to cop a feel as soon as I can get back on the road again, after my TKA - - Total Knee Athroplasty. Enjoy! Fran (7)
