105 Benefits and Selection Table D-M-E s Internal Latch Lock Allows Precision Control of Mold Plate Latchg Operation D-M-E s unique ternally-mounted latch lock mechanism adapts a number of mold base sizes and plate thicknesses. It is available three sizes accoodate most standard D-M-E stripper plate mold bases. Two travel ranges and two center puller p lengths are available for each of the three latch lock sizes. Once stalled, D-M-E s ternal latch locks control the sequence of one partg le openg after the first partg le has traveled a predetermed distance. After stallation there are no adjustments that can be accidentally changed. The ternal latch locks are most coonly used on D-M-E AX-Series stripper plate mold bases but can be used on other D-M-E stripper plate mold bases as well. Recoended Maximum Standard D-M-E Mold Base Width D-M-E s ternal latch lock allows control of the mold plate openg sequence on mold bases with stripper plates. It enables one plate or group of plates be latched gether while the first partg le openg occurs. Then, after a predetermed amount of travel, the latch lock releases the latched plate or group of plates for the remag partg le or partg les open. Maximum Recoended Load Values (Per Ass'y.) However, for larger molds, thick plates, or an application where loads are near maximum, additional assemblies and/or next largest size assemblies may be required. An application must never exceed the maximum recoended load values. A balanced load must be mataed avoid cockg and bdg, which could cause severe overloadg. Select the appropriate ternal latch lock size 28 diameter (small), 34 diameter (medium), or 45 diameter (large) based on the width of the mold base, as dicated the chart on page 105. However, large molds, thick plates or heavy load applications may require the next largest size assembly than is specified. 2. Select the appropriate travel range from the two choices for each size the table on page 105. This selection is based on the specific application requirements for the amount of travel that must occur at one partg le prior the latch beg released. The tal travel requirements are based on the amount needed for the application as explaed above, plus 3 (.12") mimum additional allowance. This added 3 mimum will make sure the full required travel has occurred before the latch lock starts its releasg action. 3. Select the appropriate length for the center puller p from the two choices for each size the chart. The length of the p is determed by the specific application cludg the mold base plate thicknesses, where the p will be mounted, etc. If possible, the center puller p should be mounted the support plate. However, some applications require the center puller p be mounted the botm clampg plate. This will depend on the travel or the length of the split sleeve component which controls the travel and the plate thicknesses the mold base. 4. The answers the above items (1-3) should establish a specific item number assembly from the table on page 105. 5. A mimum of four assemblies are recoended per mold. However, for larger molds, thick plates, or an application where loads are near maximum, additional assemblies and/or next largest size assemblies may be required. An application must never exceed the maximum recoended load values. A balanced load must be mataed avoid cockg and bdg which could cause severe overloadg. Only one size latch lock assembly should be used each mold base. 6. The center puller p should be counterbored its mountg plate 4 (.157") mimum for most applications, as shown the drawgs at right. This counterbore aligns the center puller p with the other components the assembly. U.S. Patent No. 5,494,435 7. The most coon applications for the latch locks are for the D-M-E AX-Series stripper plate mold bases. However, many other types of stripper plate mold bases can also be used with this ternal plate latchg mechanism. It is important make sure that the leader p lengths all applications are long enough fully engage the stripper plate through its full travel. The latch lock mechanism latches two plates gether but is not tended provide guidance. Instead, it relies on the leader ps the mold for proper alignment and support of the actuated stripper plates. 8. In the fully latched position the ternal latch lock mechanism will allow movement of approximately 0.4 (.016") for the 28 diameter and 34 diameter assemblies and approximately 0.5 (.020") for the 45 diameter assemblies. 9. Injection moldg mache mold openg speed may have be reduced order make sure that excessive shock loadg does not occur. 10. The ternal latch lock is not recoended for severe load applications. 11. The ternal latch lock must not be exposed temperatures that exceed 150 C (300 F) at any time. 12. Lubricate all metal--metal contact areas itially and periodically as required. A good grade of moldmakers non-meltg type grease for the appropriate temperature should be used. 13. An optional sleeve can be added the latch lock that provides two additional functions. However, this optional sleeve is not required for the latch lock function. The optional sleeve can be added corporate guided ejection and/or normal ejecr assembly return functions the mold. Refer page 111 for specific formation regardg this sleeve option. Internal latch lock application with center puller ps mounted the support plate. Additional bearg surface contact for the center puller ps may require a thicker botm clampg plate or the addition of another plate the botm of the mold for some applications. See stallation data. 4. A mimum of four assemblies are typically recoended per mold. However, for larger molds, thick plates, or an application where loads are near maximum, additional assemblies and/or next largest size assemblies may be required. An application must never exceed the maximum recoended load values. A balanced load must be mataed avoid cockg and bdg which could cause severe overloadg. Only one size latch lock assembly should be used each mold base.
