DGE Electrical Linear Actuators Features and Benefits Enclosed Belt and Ball Screw Drives DGE actuators encapsulate their mechanical drives within the body of the actuator. This protects them from contamination and premature failure that can result from contamination. This feature also saves you maintenance costs and maximizes your production time. Multi-axis Systems Keeping in step with our modular philosophy, DGE linear actuators make it easy for you to combine other actuators to the DGE by using one of several adapter kits. This modular approach saves you time and money by providing you with cost-effective, ready made solutions that can be easily achieved. Get More For Your Money Ball screw driven linear actuators with recirculating ball bearing guide types DGE-ZR-KF and DGE-SP-KF have wide style four track linear guides that are up to three times wider than standard width guides. The wider stance provides you with superior load and moment capability. This feature allows you to use smaller, less expensive actuators to carry a moment load. Furthermore, Festo supports a wide range of options for attaching thirdparty motor mounting kits, so using motors from several manufacturers is not a problem. KeyFeaturesandTypeCodes KSK Connecting Shafts Features Electrical linear actuators DGE- are often combined to form multi-axis systems. It is particularly important, when using gantry systems with a long gantry axis and heavy loads, that thetwobasicaxesbedriven synchronously. For these systems, two axes with belt driven linear actuators are generally coupled with a shared motor and synchronized using a connecting shaft. Connecting shafts are available for DGE sizes 25, 40 and 63. Distance (Center-to-center Distance L1) Between the Axes A connecting shaft consists of a connecting tube with two couplings attached to its ends. The connecting shaft transmits the required torque, and thus avoids misalignment between the actuators. It also ensures slip-free transmission, resulting in identical travel. The center-to-center distance between the two actuators must be entered under distance (see table). 4 4.3 L1 Size 25 40 63 L1 min. [mm] 200 250 350 L1 max. Customized Motor Mounting Kits Motor Flanges, Couplings, Mounting Accessories Maximum and Minimum Values for Sizing The following tables list the maximum and minimum values per actuator type. Standard pertains to motors that have dimensions between the minimum and maximum standard dimensions listed. Oversized is for motors that have dimensions greater than the standard, but less than or equal to the oversized dimensions on any one dimension. Anything greater than or smaller than the listed dimensions will need to be handled as special. In certain situations, undersized or oversized motors may not be physically able to be mounted to a particular actuator. The dimensions below are based on a square flanged motor design, with thru holes and a straight shaft. Some dimensions may not be possible for round faced motors with tapped mounting holes. Please consult Festo in these situations. Note: all dimensions are in millimeters Belt Drive, Bolt Circle PilotDiameter Shaft Diameter Shaft Length Type ZR and RF Minimum Max. Oversized Minimum Max. Glossary Engineering Support Absolute accuracy For an actuator of motion, this is the devation between the commanded and actual position, also termed inaccuracy. The accuracy of a ball screw driven actuator is called the residual positioning accuracy when all other linear deviations have been eliminated, such as cosine error, screw pitch error, angular misalignment at the measuring point and deviations resulting from thermal influences. Absolute positioning Positioning using absolute dimensions. Actual and commanded position are always relative to an absolute zero point. Also see Relative positioning Acceleration torque Thetorquethatanactuatormust develop in order to compensate a momentary change in the load torque of a driven machine. Thetorquecanbepositive (acceleration of the actuator) or negative (deceleration of the actuator). Axis rigidity The deflection or bending under load, for example of a gantry axis. Axis rigidity affects positioning accuracy. F=load f=deflection Axis rigidity is influenced by deflection or vibration behavior, the travel, the unsupported span and the load (dead weight plus load). l/2 Also see Rigidity F l f l 5 5.1 212 Festo Corporation Info 130 US Subject to change 03/2005

Glossary Engineering Support Backlash The amount of play, or clearance, between elements in a set of moveable parts, which results in mechanical lost motion when changing directions. Break-away torque Thetermusedforthetorque required to gradually set a transmission train in motion. It is inversely proportional to the transmission ratio and proportional to the size of the gear unit. The load torque is greater at standstill than at the beginning of motion. Efficiency Characteristic value for the quality of energy conversion by machines and systems: their performance. The efficiency η is thus the ratio of the of the useful work performed by a machine to the energy required for its operation and is always less than 1 or less than 100%. Analogously, in an electrical circuit, the generated power is compared to the sum of the power consumed by the voltagesourceandloads. Moment 1. The tendency or measure of tendency to produce motion, especially rotation about a point or axis. 2. The product of a quantity (as a force) and its perpendicular reference point or axis, expressed in Nm. Also called moment load. Themomentofacoupleistheproduct of its force and the distance between its opposing forces. Moment of inertia (Mass moment of inertia) Quotient of the torque M acting on a rotating body and the resulting angular acceleration ε. The moment of inertia is given by: A rotating body made up of many mass elements in which each element is moving in a circular path around an axis of radius r has the following moment of inertia: In rotation, the moment of inertia is a measure of the resistance to a change in angular velocity and thus has the same quality as mass for linear motion, but is largely dependent on how the mass is distributed in the body. Mass moments of inertia play an important role when bodies are turned or twisted. Large mass moments of inertia mean great resistance to bending or torsion. 5 5.1 03/2005 Subject to change Info 130 US Festo Corporation 213

Glossary Engineering Support Positional deviation Maximum deviation in the mean of all measured positions after motion to a position has been completed multiple times. Positioning accuracy Difference between the actual position reached and the planned or programmed nominal position. In the case of ball screw actuators, for example, it depends on such factorsaspitcherror, bearing play, pitch error in the measuring system, and deformation and effects resulting from load. Relative positioning Positioning by means of relative dimensions, that is from a position relatedtoanypointtoanother position, where the dimensions are defined as an incremental dimension and do not reference azeropoint. Repeatability The maximum deviation between atual position values obtained in repetitive moves to a desired position. 5 5.1 214 Festo Corporation Info 130 US Subject to change 03/2005

Glossary Engineering Support Resolution In a measuring system, the smallest displacement or change of angle that can be sensed between two discrete positions. In the case of incremental sensors, the smallest value is an increment. Because of errors in the drive train (hysteresis, reversal backlash, torsion), in most systems, the smallest executable step is signifcantly greater than the resolution of the measuring system. Rigidity A measure for the resistance of a mechanical structure to a change in shape under load. It is the quotient of load change and form change. The reciprocal of rigidity is flexibility. In rotary drives, the torsional rigidity is of interest. In gantries, the flexural rigidity is specified. The overall rigidity of a drive unit is made up of the rigidity of the individual components (rigidity of drive bearing, gear, coupling, ball screw, spindle bearing, nut bearing on slide). The ratio of force F and distortion x is constant over a large range and is givenasfollows(wherekisthe material-dependent variant): F=k x Thegreaterthevalueofk, themore rigid the material. Second moment of area A measurement of the efficiency of a shape (as the cross-section of a beam) in its resistance to bending, expressed in mm 4. In general, a shape is more efficient whenthegreaterpartofitsmassisas far as possible from its centroid (or center of gravity). 5 5.1 03/2005 Subject to change Info 130 US Festo Corporation 215
