Editor s Note: It s been many years since I published an of the origin of the GTO name, used by Pontiac to brand performance model beginning with the 1964 model year. readers already know the story behind the letters GTO Pontiac, but some may not know the actual details. Page 8 explanation its mid-size Most of you as used by hen the Pontiac GTO was created beginning in the 1964 model year, the name GTO was taken from the Grand Touring or GT racing class of the European grand prix racing circuit. The GT class was for automobiles that were production models, and could be purchased by the general public from an automobile dealership, and that were not custom built specifically for racing. These were high performance two-door cars designed for rapid acceleration and sustained high speed travel. The initials GTO stand for Grand Turismo Omologato, which is Italian for Grand Touring Homolgated. Homologated means certified or qualified. So, GTO means a car certified to race in the GT class. The Pontiac GTO was never certified for GT class racing, and was never raced on the European circuit. The GTO was the first production automobile manufactured using a mid-size car platform, with front and rear seats, and powered by a high performance engine rated at over 300 horsepower. This configuration of automobiles with relatively small bodies and large, powerful engines became known as muscle cars, and the Pontiac GTO was the first.

Saturday, January 23: Annual Brunch We are soliciting suggestions as to a location for holding this event. The event will begin at 11:00 am. It needs to be a restaurant venue with a separate dining area/meeting/party room where the event can take place. The venue must offer a good meal, served either to the participants at their tables or as a buffet. The price per person must be in the $20 to $30 range. There must be a projection screen available for displaying a continuous photo show of the club events that took place in 2015. The availability of a digital slide projector would be a plus, so we do not have to furnish our own digital projector. If you have a suggestion for a venue, please contact a Board Member.
