Table of Contents Appendix 1 Important Safety Information Look for Safety Symbol The SAFETY ALERT SYMBOL indicates there is a potential hazard to personal safety involved and extra safety precaution must be taken. When you see this symbol, be alert and carefully read the message that follows it. In addition to design and configuration of equipment, hazard control and accident prevention are dependent upon the awareness, concern, prudence and proper training of personnel involved in the operation, transport, maintenance and storage of equipment. Be Aware of Signal Words Signal words designate a degree or level of hazard seriousness. DANGER indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. This signal word is limited to the most extreme situations, typically for machine components that, for functional purposes, cannot be guarded. WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury, and includes hazards that are exposed when guards are removed. It may also be used to alert against unsafe practices. CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury. It may also be used to alert against unsafe practices. Prepare for Emergencies Be prepared if a fire starts Keep a first aid kit and fire extinguisher handy. Intended Usage Use the unit mount coulter (UMC) on Great Plains planters equipped with 25 Series row units, and adequate forward clearance. The unit mount coulter is used for chopping residue and preparing the soil for the opener disks. Do not modify unit mount coulter for use with attachments other than those approved by Great Plains. Note: Unit mount coulters may be incompatible with some 3-point planters, and may be incompatible with some frame-mounted accessories. Consult your Great Plains dealer. Using This Manual This manual will familiarize you with safety, assembly and operation. Read this manual and follow the recommendations to help ensure safe and efficient operation. Consult your planter Operator manual for adjustments and maintenance. The information in this manual is current at printing. Some parts may change to assure top performance. 4 UMC Table of Contents Appendix Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Assembly Before You Start 1. Move the planter to an area with adequate illumination, and a clear surface beneath for recover of any dropped parts. 2. Unfold the planter, if a folding model. 3. Raise the planter. Raise the row units if a separate operation. Install lift/transport locks. 4. Block tires, or put hitched tractor in Park, set parking brake, and remove key. Tools Required Basic hand tools Screw thread adhesive, such as Loctite Unit Mount Coulter Installation Refer to Figure 2 1. Mount the coulter assembly to the front of the opener unit with 1 2 inch 1 1 2 inch carriage bolts, 1 2 inch lock washers and 1 16 20 2 inch nuts 18. 2. Align the coulter blade so it is centered between the two opener disks and tighten the bolts. 3. With the coulter assembly mounted and tightened the coulter blade should be at or 1 4 inch above the depth of the opener disks. See adjustment on page 5. Crushing Hazard: Prevent frame and.or opener lowering. Coulter installation requires working near raised row units, and perhaps under raised frame-mounted accessories. A lowering or falling frame, wing or row could cause serious injury or death. Sharp Object Hazard: Row unit disk blades may be sharp. Use caution when installing or making adjustments. 18 20 16 Figure 2 Mounting Coulter Assembly 34397 204-141M Table of Contents Appendix 2012-08-27

Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Table of Contents Appendix 5 Adjustments The ideal operating depth for coulters is 1 4 inch (6 mm) above opener depth. Although they may have originally been set to this depth, coulter (and opener) blades wear with time, and may need adjusting. Adjusting the coulter depth is accomplished by re-mounting the coulter blade in one of the six mounting holes arranged in a staggered pattern in the coulter bracket. Refer to Figure 3 and Figure 4 Raise unit mount coulter and install cylinder locks before working on coulters. Row unit may be fully lowered or locked up. Do not attempt to move blade when the current or new position causes it to contact the ground during adjustment. Be careful around the front end of row units. Row clear tines and coulter blades may be sharp. To adjust coulter depth: 15 7 1. Dismount row cleaner (if present) to reduce risk of injury. 2. Determine the present opener and coulter depths. Figure 3 25 Series Unit-Mounted Coulter 29124 3. Note which bracket hole the coulter is presently using. 4. Determine which new hole will position the coulter closer to the 1 4 inch-above depth. See the table below. If none, don t move it. 5. Remove the 5 8-11 4 inch bolt, lock washer and nut ( 15 in Figure 3). 6. Move the blade to the new position. Insert the bolt, and tighten on the lock washer and nut. Hole Number Depth of (new) coulter blade relative to (new) opener blades 5 6 3 4 2 1 2 1 inch (25 mm) above 3 5 8 inch (16 mm) above 5 1 4 6 1 4 inch (6 mm) above 0 3 8 inch (9.5 mm) below 3 4 inch (19 mm) below 7. Re-adjust openers, if installed. If a worn coulter cannot be adjusted to satisfactory operating depth, replace coulter blade. 6 UMC Table of Contents Appendix Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Maintenance Proper servicing and adjustment is the key to the long life of any farm implement. With careful and systematic inspection, you can avoid costly maintenance, time and repair. After using your Yield-Pro Unit-Mount Coulter for several hours, check all bolts to be sure they are tight. Check blade height for proper depth. Blade Replacement Sharp Object Hazard: For operator safety always replace a coulter blade with the opener raised. 1. Remove bolt 15, lock washer 21 and nut 19. 2. Remove coulter blade and hub assembly. 3. Remove the 1 2 inch flange nuts 18 from the hub assembly and remove the disk blade. 4. Install the new disk blade and secure in place with the 1 2 inch flange nuts 18. 5. Install the coulter blade and hub assembly and adjust the coulter height using the adjustment steps on page 5. 19 21 18 15 Figure 5 Blade Adjustment 34399 204-141M Table of Contents Appendix 2012-08-27
