Introduction The Rome HingeWheel Combination Harrows are designed for long troublefree operation under rigorous conditions. These harrows combine the superior uniform leveling and mixing capability of the hinge harrow with the transportability of the wheel harrow. A full range of adjustments allow the operator to control depth of penetration. Gang angle of adjustments are from 0 to degrees and can be made on the go with hydraulic control. Tapered roller bearings are greaseable to assure long life with minimal down time and increased productivity. Heavy duty bearing wear plates are standard. If soil conditions are extremely abrasive, an Optional, Extra Heavy Duty Bearing Wear Plate, may be ordered. Receiving Check all parts on the Packing List. See various illustrations and layout for assembly. Assembly For export shipments: Follow steps through. For domestic shipments: Follow steps through. Step Assembling Gangs Mount disk blades on each axle assembly as shown in Illustration. The number of disk blades and disk spacers will vary with each size disk gang assembly. For shipping purposes, the bearings, spacers, axle washer, bumper washer, bumper washer nuts and axle nut locks are preassembled. Disk blades are shipped bundled together. To assemble the gangs, perform the following steps: ) Remove the axle nut on the bumper washer end of the shipping assembly. The bumper washer fits the convex surface of the disk blade. ) Remove all bearings and spacers from the axle; leaving only the axle washer, an axle nut lock and one axle nut on the axle. Caution: Care should be taken to prevent damage to the axle threads as parts are slid on the axle. ) Slide a disk blade down the axle until it contacts the axle washer. Note: The axle washer fits the concave side of the blade. Slide a bearing on the axle and raise the axle to a to a vertical position. Axle, blade and bearing will now stand in an upright position without being held. If axle washer is not snug against the concave side of the blade, it is necessary to tilt axle and disk blade and slide a short x block of wood underneath the disk blade. Be sure to position it between the nut and floor or ground. This assures that the threaded end of the axle will be visible when the gang is completely stacked. Note: If this procedure is not followed, the shaft will be too short and the nut cannot be installed.

Step Assembling Gangs... continued ) Refer to Illustration and continue to slide the bearings, disks and spacers down the the axle exactly in the order shown. Important: Make sure that the concave and convex faces on the bearing assemblies, washers and disk spacers coincide with the faces on the disk blades. Note: Concave and convex flanges on the bearing assemblies are factory mounted to correspond to the front and rear gangs in order to have the grease fittings always facing to the rear. Illustration. Assembling Gangs ) After the last disk blade is in place, mount the axle washer onto axle. Replace the axle nut. Now using the axle nut wenches provided, tighten axle nuts as much as possible. For best results and additional leverage, place a to foot length of diameter pipe on each axle nut wrench to serve as an extension to the handles. Important: Retighten axle nuts after the first 0 to hours of operation. After to 0 hours of operation, retighten again! Now mount nut locks to axle washers and bumper washers with cap screws provided. Step Installing Gangs on Gang Carriers Where lifting facilities are available: ) Position front gang assemblies with concave side of disks to the right, as viewed from the rear. ) Position rear gang assemblies with concave side of disks to theleft, as viewed from the rear. ) Place gang carriers on corresponding gang assemblies and attach with bearing bolts. Where lifting facilities are limited: ) Position gang carriers upside and place gang assemblies on gang carriers and attach with bearing bolts. ) Turn completed assemblies of gangs and gang carriers right side up. 0

Step Joining Gang Carriers Secure the rear gang carriers in the upright position by blocking up under the hitch plates and gang carrier. Attach pivot hinge at the hinge point with the hinge pin. Roll front gang carrier into position and bolt pivot hinge to front gang carrier with x bolts. (See Illustration.) For operation in most soil conditions, it is recommended that the pivot hinge be bolted approximately in the center of the front carrier plate. Do Not Tighten at this time! Adjusting Rear Gang Carriers: The rear gang carrier may be shifted laterally in relation to the front gang carrier to obtain better leveling and filling of the left hand furrow. To accomplish this, place the harrow at a half angle position and block the rear gang. ) Remove the nine bolts attaching the pivot hinge (Illustration ). If the rear gang carrier is to be shifted to the left, reverse the tractor very slowly until the selected bolt holes on the front gang carrier plate are reached. If the rear gang carrier is to be shifted to the right, move the tractor forward slowly. Replace the bolts. Illustration. Joining Gang Carriers

Adjusting Rear Gang Carriers... continued: ) Remove the six bolts attaching the stabilizer hinge (Illustration ), and swing into position corresponding to that of the pivot hinge. This means the last bolt in the pivot hinge is in the third hole from the left end of the front gang carrier bolting plate, the last bolt on the left end of the stabilizer hinge should also in the third hole from the left end of its bolting plate. Step Installing Stabilizer Attach rear stabilizer to rear gang carrier and stabilizer pivot to front stabilizer with the pin provided. Swing stabilizer with stabilizer hinge over right plate on front gang carrier. Bolt into position with x bolts provided to coincide with position of pivot hinge (Illustration ). Pivot hinge and stabilizer hinge should be bolted in the same relative position on front gang carrier bolting plates. Do Not Tighten. Illustration. Stabilizer Assembly

Step Installing Latch Support Assembly The latch support assembly is standard equipment and will work alone or in conjunction with the hydraulic control group. Its function is to maintain the angle between the front and rear gangs when the harrow is in operation and to hold the gangs parallel and to support the front gang during transport. Assembly and Operation: ) Attach the latch support beam to the rear gang carrier with the pin provided. (Refer to Illustration, A and B). ) Attach the opposite end (front) of the latch support beam to the wide end of the latch support with pin. ) A pin with a handle and a klik pin are provided to hold the harrow closed during transport. There are two holes in the latch support for this pin. During the transport (with harrow closed) this pin is placed in the front hole on the latch support assembly. The other hole (on the back side of the latch support) is for storing the pin while the harrow is in operation. Illustration. Latch Support Assembly

Step Attaching Offset Bar Assembly Bolt the offset bar to the hitch plates on the front gang carrier with bolts and bushings provided in the offset bar. (See Illustration ). The hitch plates are provided with three holes. For normal operation in average soil conditions, bolt the offset bar to the center holes; for hard soil and deepest penetration, use upper holes. For light soil and lesser penetration, bolt to the lower holes. Attaching Offset Bat to Hitch Brackets Step Attaching and Adjusting Drawbar Assembly The drawbar is attached to the offset bar with three bolts, nuts and lockwashers. The harrow may be moved laterally behind the tractor by moving the drawbar on the offset bar. For normal operation, the drawbar plates should be bolted near the center of the offset bar. To make major or large offsets, the drawbar plates should be moved on the offset bar. To make minor or small offsets, remove the drawbar positioning bolt, loosen the drawbar pivot bolt and move the drawbar between the plates to the desired position and secure. When properly adjusted, there will be no side draft and the drawbar should be in the approximate line of travel. The trial adjustments should be made after the harrow has been put into operation, observing the proper angle and trailing of the harrow. Attaching and Adjusting the Drawbar

Step Mounting and Adjusting Scraper Assembly Install the scrapers as shown in Illustration. The scraper should be adjusted so that it does not come in contact with the disk blade as it turns. It should be slightly closer at the point so that trash buildup between the scraper and the disk blade is minimal. Illustration. Scraper Installation Step Hydraulic Control Group Installation Four hydraulic cylinders in the hydraulic system are used to control the adjustments to the harrow necessary under different conditions. Two of these (connecting transport to rear frame) are used to raise or lower the transport arms and bring the harrow into transport or working position. These cylinders must extend to lower the transport arms, which will bring the harrow into the transport position, pressing the tires (mounted on transport arms) against the ground and gradually lifting the frame. Retracting the cylinders will lower the frame until the disks rest on the ground. These two cylinders must be fully retracted during working conditions. Note: Do Not Lower the Transport Assembly when the Harrow Angle is Open! The function of the small cylinder (connecting the front frame to the leveler) is to level the harrow relative to the height of the tractor drawbar during transport. Use the adjusting bolt to stop the cylinder pivot (with fully extended cylinder rod) in a position to allow it to reach tractor drawbar with the plunger when the harrow is lifted up and the frame is parallel with ground level. When the bolt is adjusted to the height of the tractor, it must be blocked by tightening the nut on the rear side of the bracket. The system is designed in such a way (using different tractors) that the stop must be adjusted only once. If the harrow is in the working position with the cylinder rod fully retracted, there will always be enough free movement for the cylinder pivot to guarantee good floatation of the harrow. (See Illustration on page and Illustration A on page for assembly). See Hydraulic Control Group Installation, Illustration, on page.

Step Hydraulic Control Group Installation... continued Hydraulic Control Group Assembly A fourth hydraulic cylinder is installed from the rear gang carrier (base end) to the rear stabilizer (rod end) and is used to open or close the angle between the front and rear gangs. Before this can be done, the crossover valve must be manually activated to direct the fluid to the angling hydraulic cylinder. Note: Do Not Open the Harrow with the Wheels Supporting its Weight! To transport the harrow, reverse the manual crossover valve to direct the fluid to the transport and leveling hydraulic cylinders. (See Illustration above for assembly details). Note: If hydraulic angling control is for some reason, used without transport assembly, disregard instructions for the cylinders and valve used with them.

Lubrication There are lubrication fittings at all harrow hinge points. These should be greased as necessary. See following instructions for lubrication of the tapered roller gang bearing assembly. Tapered Roller Gang Bearing Assembly Lubrication: Use a medium consistency pressure grease. Grease the bearings whenever the seals appear dry. Add sufficient grease to force lubricant out under the seal lip. In sandy conditions, the bearings should be lubricated daily to prevent the buildup of sand and grease just outside the sealing surface. Rome tapered roller bearing assemblies are equipped with seals facing outward; therefore no damage can occur due to excessive lubrication. Adjustment: Check the bearings every 00 to 00 hours for proper adjustment. If end play is detected, remove shims from under the bearing cap to eliminate it. However, if too many shims are removed, the bearing will run tight. This is undesirable and will result in accelerated wear of the bearing rollers and races. Caution: The neoprene seals should be watched closely for wear. These seals should last for 000 to00 hours of use. When they become worn, they must be replaced. The successful operation of the bearing depends on keeping it dirt free. Maintenance All nuts and bolts must be kept tight. Special attention must be given to keeping axle nuts tight. Note: Tighten Axle Nuts Again After First 0 to hours of Operation. Then After to 0 Hours of Operation, Tighten Once Again. If these nuts are not kept tight, disks will turn on the axle and all components of the gang will be damaged! Serial Number Location The serial number can be found on the rear gang carrier. Be sure to specify serial number when ordering parts.

Important Information The Eight Bolt Hub has a load rating of 000 lbs. when mounting with a.0 negative offset. The wheel is mounted correctly when the valve stem and the deep dish of the wheel are both facing out and on the lug bolt side of the wheel. WARNING: Reversing the wheels will change the position in which the load is carried on the hub bearing and will reduce bearing life. Always make sure to torque wheel bolts at 0 to 00 ft. lbs. Mount Wheels and Tires Attach wheel and tire assemblies to the hub. Assemblies with lug bolts. Be sure the valve Stem faces to the outside (lug bolt side).

() LIMITATION OF REMEDIES: In no case shall Rome be liable for any special, incidental, or consequential damages based on breach of warranty, breach of contract, negligence, strict liability in tort, or any other legal theory. Such damages include, but are not limited to, loss of profits, loss of savings and revenue, loss of use of the equipment, or any associated equipment, cost of capital, cost of any substitute equipment, facilities, or services, downtime, the claims of third parties and injury to property. Some states do not allow limitations or incidental of consequential damages, so the above may not apply to you. () NO OTHER WARRANTIES: Unless modified in writing, signed by both parties and approved by the General Manager of Rome, this agreement is understood to be the complete and exclusive agreement between the parties, superseding all prior agreements, oral or written, and all other communications between the parties relating to the subject matter of this agreement. No employee of Rome or any other party is authorized to make any warranty in addition to those made in this agreement. () Rome reserves the right to improve products through modifications and changes in design or material without being obligated to incorporate such changes in products of prior manufacture.
