Engines for Blue Water Craft S U P E R I O R T E C H N O L O G Y Since our very beginning, Volkswagen Marine has put emphasis on tailoring engine types to the individual needs of the boats and yachts they were designed for. As a result, we have always separated our engine range into engines which were primarily designed for water displacing craft, and engines for planing boats. The latter versions were designed to reach sustained engine speeds of at least 4.000 rpm, so that they would offer the wide engine speed range that is desirable for planing boats. For water displacing craft, on the other hand, we offer engines with more limited engines speeds for extreme refinement and low noise levels. Over the years, however, we noted an increasing demand for our marine engine technology from makers of particularly exclusive, and typically quite large cruisers which are designed for long distance cruising. In the case of sailing yachts, this even includes transoceanic capabilities. What these builders like about Volkswagen Marine are primarily the low noise levels of our engines, and our innovations for minimized maintenance: Built-in, electric oil change systems Automatic drive belt tensioning Automatic valve clearance adjustment
TDI 140-5 BW / TDI 230-6 BW Specially for such vessels, we have now created two engine variants that match the particular requirements aboard a boat which has all the amenities of a sea going ship: 1. Extra electrical power supply, either 230 V or 24 V (option). 2. Special electronic mapping for optimized operation at medium engine speeds. 3. Massive thermical and mechanical reserves guarantee sustained engine power over days of continuous use, even in tough conditions. 4. All Volkswagen Marine engines come standard with onboard computer, offering extremely accurate fuel burn rate information amongst many other features. And be re-assured by the fact that these engines come directly from one of the most successful global motor companies. TDI 230-6 BW S U P E R I O R T E C H N O L O G Y
TDI 140-5 BW 5-cylinder turbo diesel with boost intercooling and variable turbo charging This engine impresses with high torque figures already at low engine speeds thanks to variable turbo charging. Another important feature for demanding customers is the noise absorbing cover on the engine, which eliminates another 2 decibels of noise emission from a five cylinder inline engine that is already silent by nature. The engine was designed from scratch-up to accommodate a second alternator, which means that engine dimensions hardly change if a second, optional alternator is installed. This can be a 24 V alternator of 80 or 110 amp, but we also offer complete 230 V power generation packages with this engine which offer alternatively 3,5 kw of 5,0 kw of household electricity whenever the main engine is turning. TDI 230-6 BW 6-cylinder common rail turbo diesel with boost intercooling and variable turbo charging Being based on the most successful diesel engine in Audi s history, this engine is so silent that it tempts people to think it runs on petrol. This is primarily a result of the extremely precise fuel injection timing by means of piezo-controlled injectors, which enable up to five injections for each combustion. Created for demanding customers of quite luxurious, technology-oriented automobiles like Audi s A6, A8, Q7 or Volkswagen s Touareg, the engine was supposed to be powerful and civilized. The TDI 230-6 Blue Water is based on our TDI 265-6, a mechanically identical engine for powerboats, but reaches maximum power already at 3,0 rpm. For particularly performance oriented offshore sailing yachts, the low weight of the engine at only 325 kg is a positive factor as well. Additional alternators on the TDI 230-6 are side mounted and available either for 24 V (80 or 110 amps) or 230 V (3,5 or 5,0 kw) power generation.
