Discover what s possible when innovation meets imagination. Hailing from four countries and two continents, the 20 student teams selected to participate in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013 include nine returning teams, 11 new teams, and four international teams. Bold designs reduce costs and carbon, increase comfort and convenience. Visit the Schneider Electric XPO booth to recharge and learn more about energy-saving solutions. See map on Pages 6-7. The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is an award-winning program that challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered homes that are cost-effective, energy efficient, and attractive. Each of the 20 collegiate homes in this year s event will be judged in 10 categories ranging from architecture and engineering to home entertainment and energy balance. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency. Solar Decathlon at a glance: The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013, held for the first time at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine, California, runs concurrently with the XPO, a clean, renewable, and efficient energy exposition. Through engaging, interactive exhibits and activities, the XPO highlights technology, education, products, arts, and business opportunities that result from clean and renewable energy generation, as well as efficient energy use. Highlights money-saving opportunities and environmental benefits presented by clean energy products and design solutions Demonstrates the potential of houses that combine affordability, energy-efficient construction and appliances, and renewable energy systems available today Promotes a whole building design approach to new construction: teams must consider the interactions of all building components and systems to enable increased building comfort, greater energy savings, and reduced environmental impact Provides participating students with unique training that prepares them to enter our nation s clean-energy industry 2 Solar Decathlon 2013 Schneider Electric
Schneider Electric contributes energy and expertise across the Solar Decathlon village. From products to power, Schneider Electric provides extensive support. As the global specialist in energy management, Schneider Electric recognizes the need for innovative, sustainable solutions to address today s most significant energy efficiency challenges. Since 2009, the company has proudly served as a sustaining sponsor of Solar Decathlon. In addition, Schneider Electric supports the event in a variety of ways, including: Did you know? One pound of carbon is eliminated for every mile driven by an electric vehicle versus a gaspowered vehicle. In 2012, nearly 49 million LEDs were installed in the U.S., saving about $ 675 million in annual energy costs. Products and technical knowledge Schneider Electric donates energy management products for use in the teams competition homes, validates student solutions, and recommends products to enable these solutions. Company volunteers staff the event, and are available throughout the week to answer engineering, product, and general efficiency questions. Safe, reliable electrical service Schneider Electric donates the products and engineering services required to implement a micro-grid solution at Solar Decathlon, enabling a safe, reliable electrical connection between the village and the utility service throughout the event. By utilizing the micro-grid, teams can power their homes during weather and electrical load variations. This display is essential to the Energy Balance contest. Teams receive full points for producing at least as much energy as their houses need, thus achieving a net energy consumption of zero during contest week. EVlink charging station Schneider Electric will provide EVlink electric vehicle charging stations for use in several competition homes. EVlink charging stations offer a green, economical transportation fuel option as well as assist in decreasing energy waste and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Energy measurement made easy Along with electrical meters to measure energy use, Schneider Electric is donating StruxureWare Energy Operation software for use in the Energy Balance contest. The software will measure each home s energy output and then display the results via a Net Energy Dashboard. www.schneider-electric.com 3
