REMOVAL & INSTALLATION CAUTION: This application is an interference engine. Do not rotate camshaft or crankshaft when timing belt is removed, or engine damage may occur. TIMING BELT Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect intake air temperature sensor connector from intake air duct. Disconnect the air intake tube from the throttle body. Disconnect the breather tube from the valve cover. Remove the air filter housing. 2. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove right front wheel. Remove right front splash shield from wheelwell. Remove accessory drive belts. See Fig. 1. 3. Remove power steering pump pulley bolts (if equipped). Remove power steering pump pulley. Remove crankshaft pulley center bolt. Remove crankshaft pulley. Lower vehicle. 4. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers. See Fig. 2. Remove power steering pump mount bolts (if equipped). Set power steering pump aside with hoses attached. 5. Using crankshaft center bolt, rotate crankshaft one full turn clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine). 6. Align mark on crankshaft sprocket with notch at bottom of rear timing belt cover. See Fig. 3. Ensure camshaft sprocket timing marks face each other. See Fig. 4. CAUTION: Engine damage could result if camshaft sprockets are not properly aligned with notches on valve cover. 7. Slightly loosen water pump bolts. Using Timing Belt Adjuster (J-42492), rotate water pump counterclockwise to relieve tension on the timing belt. See Fig. 5. Remove timing belt. Page 1

Fig. 5: Moving Water Pump To Relieve Timing Belt Tension Installation 1. Ensure crankshaft and camshaft timing marks are still aligned. Install the timing belt. See Fig. 6. Turn water pump clockwise until the adjust arm pointer on the automatic tensioner aligns with the notch on the automatic tensioner bracket. See Fig. 7. Tighten water pump bolts. 2. Using crankshaft center bolt, turn crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine) 2 full revolutions. Loosen water pump bolts. 3. Rotate water pump until the adjust arm pointer on the automatic tensioner is aligned with the pointer on the automatic tensioner bracket. See Fig. 8. Final tighten water pump bolts. See TORQUE Page 6
SPECIFICATIONS. 4. Remove crankshaft sprocket center bolt. Install power steering pump (if equipped). Tighten bolts to specification. Install timing belt covers. Install crankshaft pulley. Tighten center bolt to specification. 5. Install power steering pump pulley (if removed). Install accessory drive belts. Install right front splash shield. Install right front wheel. Install air filter housing. Connect air intake temperature sensor connector. Connect negative battery cable. Adjust the drive belts to correct tension. Page 7
