ENGINEERING AND SITE SOLUTIONS CASE STUDIES GLENFIELD FREE DISCHARGE SUPPLIED TO WELSH WATER DAM Ystradfellte Dam and spillway was built in 1914. It has a capacity of over 3 billion litres and a maximum height of 29m. The dam is located within the Brecon Beacons National Park in south Wales. Over the years, the spillway has suffered repeated damage due to several incidents of discharge overflow. In 2011, an inspection was completed on the reservoir and under the Reservoirs Act, it was discovered that the spillway had insufficient capacity by modern standards and required a major upgrade to pass the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). The scour outlet has to pass flood flows of up to 7m3/s during the construction phase of the spillway to avoid flows down the spillway. In order to control these flows and provide sufficient energy dissipation, a Glenfield Series 857 free discharge valve (DN900) was selected by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water. Glenfield Valves and Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water worked closely together to ensure the valve supplied met the system requirements. One of the key points involved in this project was to minimise the water jet spread exiting the valve so that nearby embankments were not at risk from impact erosion. Glenfield designed and supplied a remote stainless steel hood which was installed at the downstream end of the discharge valve to contain the jet of water and avoid the conical spray pattern associated with this valve type. As can be seen from pictures the water jet exiting the valve and hood is directed within the walls of the civil structure. The valve and hood were delivered in May and commissioned in August 2015. Glenfield were on-site to supervise the successful commissioning of the valve. Glenfield Valves offer a wide range of valve products for isolation, flow control and energy dissipating applications for dams, reservoirs and hydro projects. We also supply specialist radial & tilting gates, penstock sluice valves and stop logs through our partnership with Orbinox (Spain). 109 YEAR OLD GLENFIELD S REFURBISHED In 2015, during a visit by Glenfield Valves to Rio Tinto, one of the world s leading global mining and metals companies, Lochaber facility in Scotland, concern was raised over the operating function of two of the original Glenfield & Kennedy control valves. The valves in question were installed in the Kinlochleven Hydropower Plant during its original construction between 1907 and 1910 when the company was owned by the British Aluminum Co. Glenfield were asked to conduct an inspection of the valves to diagnose the problem and report on the feasibility of a refurbishment programme to return the valves to their original condition. The valves were delivered to Glenfield s facility in Kilmarnock where they were disassembled and inspected. The main components were carefully shot blasted by Glenfield in-house specialists to expose the surfaces of the raw material. As anticipated, and due to the age of the valves, the original cast steel components showed signs of erosion caused by natural wear and tear over 100 plus years of operation. The before picture shows the extent of this erosion. On further inspection, it was determined that one of the main valve bodies had also been subjected to considerable erosion and was therefore deemed to be beyond economic repair. Utilising the historical design drawings, Glenfield were able to produce a 3D CAD model of the valve body to create a new casting pattern. The pattern was produced in the UK with the subsequent steel casting also being produced within the UK. All of the castings were then machined to the original valve dimensions. All non-metallic components were replaced and other components, including the high pressure spring assembly, were reconditioned and returned to the required high quality standard. This included full epoxy coating of all internal and external metallic surfaces. The valves were then reassembled and successfully hydrostatically tested by experienced GVL engineers to the original working pressures. The most important aspect of this test is to ensure that the springs are set to a specific blow-out pressure to ensure the hydropower system safety. Both valves have been reinstalled into the main pipeline and are working just as they did over 100 years ago. Before During After DAMS, RESERVOIRS AND HYDROPOWER SOLUTIONS 5
