Introduction In 2013 domestic exports increased by 10,5% whereas total imports decreased by 16,2%. This has resulted in a decreased total trade of 6,4 billion and an improvement in the trade balance which reached - 3,2 billion from - 4,3 billion in 2012. Re-exports have also been showing an upward trend reaching 0,9 billion in 2013, representing an increase of 15,7% from 2012. Trade by Area The EU is the most important trading partner of Cyprus with a share of 69,6% in total imports, 48,3% in domestic exports and 60,8% in re-exports. In 2013 total imports from the EU decreased to 3,3 billion, domestic exports to the EU increased marginally to 0,3 billion and re-exports increased to 0,5 billion. Total imports from EUROMED countries, another significant partner of Cyprus, decreased marginally to 0,7 billion, whereas domestic exports to EUROMED countries increased to 0,1 billion. There was a decrease in total imports from all other areas worldwide, except for a marginal increase that was recorded in total imports from Southern Eastern Africa. A significant fall was registered in total imports from MERCOSUR countries. An increase was recorded in domestic exports in all areas with the exception of MERCOSUR countries (-38%), Caribbean (-28,6%), South Caucasus(-8,8%), Central Asia(-6,8%) and EFTA (-4,7%). There was also a significant increase in re-exports to areas such as Central America (+3.695%), NAFTA (+24,2%) and EUROMED (+16,4%). (See Annex VIII for more details). Domestic Exports In 2013 domestic exports increased by 10,5% reaching 0,7 billion and consisted mainly of industrial products of manufacturing origin. Industrial products of manufacturing origin and industrial products of agricultural origin depicted an increase in the last 3 years and reached 0,4 billion and 0,1 billion respectively in 2013. Raw products agricultural decreased by 21% in 2012 and then increased by 36% to reach 0,1 billion in 2013. Pharmaceutical dairy together and products accounted for 39% of total domestic exports in 2013. When one looks at domestic exports by product, it becomes clear that pharmaceuticals has been the leading export category in the last years, with a share of 28% in 2013, followed by Halloumi cheese (11%), potatoes (8%), waste and scrap of paper, glass and metal (7%), cement (5%), gold (5%), citrus fruit,(4%), fish(3%), cathodes of refined copper (3%), fruit and vegetable juices (3%) and telecommunication equipment (2%). Pharmaceutical products have been the most important of all exporting products of Cyprus in the last few years, exhibiting an annual increase. In 2013 domestic exports of pharmaceuticals grew by 23,5% and accounted for 28,3% of total domestic exports of Cyprus. Exports of Halloumi cheese have also been increasing in the last 3 years and accounted for 10,8% in 2013. In the last 3 years other products have been decreasing in importance, with a share of 28,9% in 2013 as compared to a share of 40,6% in 2011. This means that in the last few years domestic exports have been increasingly concentrating in the main export products of Cyprus, listed in figure 4. There was an increase in domestic exports to all continents in 2013. The most significant increase was the case of South America (+429,1%), however accounting just for 1% of the total. Domestic exports to Europe (EU and non-eu) increased by 3,5% and accounted for 55% of the total. Domestic exports to Asia, Africa and North America grew by 8,2%, 47,6% and 41,3% and accounted for 29%, 11% and 2% respectively. Domestic exports to Oceania grew by 27% and accounted for 2% of the total (See Annex VI). There was a drop in the share of domestic exports to European countries from 59% in 2012 to 55% in 2013. From the top destinations for Cypriot products a significant increase was registered in exports to Egypt (+102,6 %), China (+29,7 %), Russia (+20,5 %), Sweden (+20,6 %), the Netherlands (+6,6%), Czech Republic (+95,8 %), Belgium (+29,5 %), and Australia (+27,8%). In 2013 Cyprus pharmaceutical products were exported to 133 countries. About 30% of pharmaceutical products were exported to China (+29%), Czech Republic (+117,6%), Ukraine (+12,8%), Ethiopia (+94,3%) and Greece (+171,3%). A significant increase was also registered in exports of pharmaceuticals to Iran (+771%). In 2013 exports of Halloumi have increased to most major destinations except for the UAE (-21,2%) and Saudi Arabia (-19,9%). More than half (57%) of domestic exports of potatoes were exported to the UK and Greece. UK was the main destination of domestic exports of natural / cultured pearls, precious stones and metal coins with a share of 84% of total domestic exports. Imports In 2013 imports for home consumption decreased by 16% to 4,6 billion and consisted mainly of consumer goods (35,5%), fuels and lubricants (28,1%) and intermediate inputs (25%). In 2013 total imports decreased by 16,2% to 4,8 billion. Main products imported in 2013 were mineral fuels and oils (-19,4%), electrical appliances(-17,1%), machinery, boilers, mechanical appliances and engines (-27,4%), pharmaceuticals( -11,2%), vehicles (-38,7%), beverages spirits and vinegar (+3,4%), plastic goods ( -19,7%), and cereals ( -1,5%) (See Annex II). In the last two years, with the exception of food and beverages, there was a decrease in imports for home consumption in all products as depicted in figure 16. In 2012 there was an increase of 15,2% in imports for home consumption of fuels and lubricants, but a subsequent decrease of 19,3% in 2013. Intermediate inputs for manufacturing has exhibited a decrease of 15,4% and 5,6% in 2012 and 2013 respectively. Passenger vehicles was the sector that was hit the most with a decrease of 31,9% and 43% in 2012 and 2013 respectively. There was a decrease in total imports from all continents in 2013. Main supplier in 2013 was Europe with a share of 73% (EU and non EU) and Asia with a share of 23%. UK (-25,9%) was the 5 th supplier of Cyprus, followed by France (-11,6%) and the Netherlands (-22,7%). See Annex VI. Imports of mineral fuels and oils originated mainly in Israel (44%), Greece (22%), France (11%) the Netherlands (9%), and Belgium (5%). Imports of boilers and machines originated mainly in Greece (21%), Germany(14%), Italy (13%), China(12%) and the Netherlands(6%). Re Exports Re exports increased by 15,7% to 0,9 billion in 2013 and consisted mainly of mineral fuel and oils (27%), aircraft (18%), electrical appliances (11%) and organic chemicals (10%). The increase in re-exports in 2013 was mainly due to a significant increase in re-exports of aircraft (+521%) and electrical appliances (+54,4%). In 2013 main destinations for re-exports from Cyprus was Greece (22,3%), UK (12,4%) and USA (5,7%).
