Collection Skull Collection Ironside It is possible to overload your motorcycle's charging system by adding too many electrical accessories. If your combined electrical accessories operating at any one time consume more electrical current than your vehicle's charging system can produce, the electrical consumption can discharge the battery and cause vehicle electrical system damage. See a Harley-Davidson dealer for advice about the amount of current consumed by additional electrical accessories, or for necessary wiring changes. (00b) These kits requires up to.8 amps additional current from the electrical system. When installing any electrical accessory, be certain not to exceed the maximum amperage rating of the fuse or circuit breaker protecting the affected circuit being modified. Exceeding the maximum amperage can lead to electrical failures, which could result in death or serious injury. (000a) The rider's safety depends upon the correct installation of this kit. Use the appropriate service manual procedures. If the procedure is not within your capabilities or you do not have the correct tools, have a Harley-Davidson dealer perform the installation. Improper installation of this kit could result in death or serious injury. (00a) This instruction sheet references Service Manual information. A Service Manual for your model motorcycle is required for this installation and is available from a Harley-Davidson Dealer. Service Parts See Figure 0 and Table. REMOVAL Stock Hand Grip To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect negative (-) battery cable before proceeding. (00048a). Refer to the Service Manual and follow the instructions given to remove the seat and disconnect the negative (-) battery cable. Retain all seat mounting hardware.. For VRSC models only: Remove the air box aluminum cover according to Service Manual instructions. For all other models: Remove the fuel tank according to Service Manual instructions.. Refer to the RIGHT HANDLEBAR SWITCH section of the Service Manual to remove the switch housing assembly. This is necessary to access the throttle cables. 4. Refer to the THROTTLE CONTROL section of the Service Manual to disconnect the throttle cables and remove the -J098 of

existing right grip/throttle sleeve assembly. After removal, make sure that the handlebar end is clean and smooth. 5. Using a T-7 TORX drive head, remove the two screws with flat washers securing the handlebar clamp to the clutch lever bracket. Remove the clamp and position the clutch hand lever assembly away from the handlebar. 6. Using a T-5 TORX drive head, loosen but do not remove the upper and lower switch housing screws. 7. Remove the end cap from the existing left handlebar grip if so equipped. Remove the grip. If grip is the glued-on type, carefully cut it away from the handlebar using a sharp blade or knife. 8. Refer to the Service Manual and remove the handlebar cover, riser cover or outer fairing if equipped. INSTALLATION Heated Hand Grip. See Figure 0 and Table. Determine if the wire harness extension (7) is required for this installation: Hold the right heated hand grip throttle and wire harness in position along the outside of the handlebar as if the assembly were installed on the handlebar. The connector at the end of the wire harness on the heated hand grip throttle must extend past the left end of the handlebar. If the connector extends past the opposite end of the handlebar, the extension will not be needed and can be discarded. If the connector does not extend past the opposite end of the handlebar, connect the extension to the connector at the end of the right heated hand grip wire harness.. Lightly apply soapy water to the outside of the vinyl jacket on the wire harness (and extension, if installed) connected to the right heated hand grip throttle.. Thread the connector and wire from the heated hand grip throttle into the right side of the handlebar, all the way through and out the left side of the handlebar. Use air pressure or an electrician's fish tape to thread the connector and wire completely through the handlebar. 4. Install the heated hand grip throttle, throttle cables and switch housing onto the right handlebar according to the stock throttle installation procedures in the Service 5. Fasten the connector on the left side of the handlebar to the left-hand heated hand grip (). 6. Use a strip of masking tape or a grease pencil to mark the left handlebar 4-/4 in (0 mm) from the left end of the handlebar. 7. Use a blunt, flexible object (such as a narrow rubber hose) in one hand to gently feed the wiring from the left hand grip into the handlebar, while using your other hand to ease the hand grip into position near the end of the handlebar. Do not lubricate left handlebar grip before installation. Lubricating grip can cause it to come off while riding, which could result in loss of control and death or serious injury. (005a) Make sure that the handlebar surface and the inside of the grip are smooth, dry and thoroughly cleaned of all dirt or adhesive residue. 8. Remove the flexible object from inside the handlebar and carefully slide the left hand grip onto the handlebar, taking care not to crush, pinch or otherwise damage the wiring inside the handlebar. Push the hand grip onto the handlebar up to the marking from Step 6. 9. See Figure. Position the left heated hand grip on the handlebar so the hand grip retaining flange () can be securely installed into the lower switch housing (). is000. Retaining flange. Route hand grip main harness outside and under the switch housing Figure. Heated Hand Grip (Left Side) Do not route the handgrip main harness inside the switch housing. Wires routed inside the switch housing could result in short circuits and equipment damage. (0069a) 0. Route the heated hand grip main wire harness between the hand grip and left switch housing, then under the switch housing ().. See Figure 0. If equipped with holes on the left underside of the handlebar, install wire retainer clips () from the kit in the holes and then fasten the wire harness to the clips. -J098 of

Otherwise, use cable straps (8) to fasten the wire harness to the handlebar. is00. Fasten the switch housing to the hand grip and handlebar according to the Service Manual instructions.. Follow the existing wiring to route the heated hand grip main wire harness: through, across or around the triple tree, along the motorcycle frame, to a general location under the seat For VRSC models only: Route the red wire near the battery positive terminal, located toward the front right side of the frame. 4. Install the battery back into the vehicle. 5. Proceed to the All Models Section. 004 or Later Touring Models. See Figure 7. Locate the B+ (battery positive) connector () on the main electrical harness under the seat (a red wire with an unused gray connector). Remove the cover () from the connector.. See Figure 0. Plug the adapter harness (0) from the kit into the B+ connector.. Cut the heated hand grip harness red wire to within easy reach of the end of the adapter harness red wire. Splice the two wires using a butt splice connector () from the kit following the instructions in Appendix B in the Service 4. For 004-006 Models: Remove the left side cover per the instructions in the Service Manual to access the fuse box. For 007 Models: Remove the right side cover per the instructions in the Service Manual to access the fuse box. All Models: Remove maxi-fuse holder, fuse block and dust cover from the vehicle per the instructions in the Service 5. For 004-006 Models: Note the terminal on each end (see Figure 7). Only the terminal WITHOUT the spring tabs will fit into the fuse cavity. Carefully cut the terminal WITH the spring tabs from the wire and discard. For 007 Models: Note the terminal on each end (see Figure 7). Only the terminal WITH the spring tabs will fit into the fuse cavity. Carefully cut the terminal WITHOUT spring tabs from the wire and discard. 6. See Figure 8. Locate the fuse cavity marked "P&A IGN", "A MAX" (4). There should be a wire feeding one side of this circuit, but no mating wire or fuse will be present. Remove the three existing fuses in this row. 7. Install the A fuse () from the kit into the fuse cavity marked "P&A IGN", "A MAX" to complete the circuit.. Proceed to All Models Section. All Models DO NOT perform the following steps until the heated hand grips and all related wiring have been installed according to the procedures outlined in this instruction sheet for your model motorcycle.. Verify that the right grip/throttle sleeve rotates and returns freely and does not bind on the handlebar or switch housing. DO NOT operate the vehicle unless the throttle functions properly. Connect positive (+) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00068a). Connect the battery cables, positive cable first.. VRSCA models only: Install the air box aluminum cover according to Service Manual instructions. All other models: Install the fuel tank according to Service Manual instructions. 4. Install the handlebar cover, riser cover or outer fairing, if equipped, according to Service Manual instructions. 5. Install the seat according to the instructions in the Service After installing seat, pull upward on seat to be sure it is locked in position. While riding, a loose seat can shift causing loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00070b) To prevent battery drain, these heated hand grips are designed to function only with the engine running. The hand grips produce peak heat with the engine running at cruising speed. The heat settings on the heated hand grip control dial range from (minimum) to 6 (peak). 6. Before starting the vehicle, check that the hand grips are not producing heat. 7. Start the engine and check the hand grips at all settings for proper heating. TROUBLESHOOTING See Figure 9 for the heated hand grip schematic diagram. Hand Grips Do Not Produce Heat. See Figure. Check for proper wire routing. The hand grip main harness must be routed outside of the switch housing. If the wires were routed internally, disassemble the left hand switch housing and inspect for pinched wires. If wires are pinched, replace the left hand grip and repeat the installation process with the correct wire routing.. Check the wire connections of the orange/white, red and black hand grip main wire harness wires. If a connection is broken or weak, repair the connection and test the hand grips. Otherwise, go to Step.. Open or remove the seat according to Service Manual instructions. 4. Start the motorcycle. 5. Check for Vdc across the red and black wires of the hand grip main wire harness. If Vdc is not present across the wires, check the fuse in the wire harness and replace it if blown. Otherwise, replace the left grip and wire harness and test the hand grips. 6. Remove the right hand grip from the handlebar. 7. Disconnect the connector on the right hand grip from the left hand grip wire harness. 8. Check continuity across the two connector leads in the right hand grip. If the test shows continuity, the hand grips are functional. Hand Grips Produce Heat with Ignition (Key) Switch Off If the hand grips produce heat with the ignition switch off, then either the hand grips are incorrectly wired to the vehicle, or the left side grip and wire harness are faulty. Carefully check all heated hand grip wire connections on the vehicle. If the connections are correct, replace the heated hand grip main wire harness, then test the hand grips. -J098 0 of
