REAR SUSPENSION 12B-1 SEC. 1 SUSPENSION The rear suspension uses asymmetrical semielliptic leaf springs in combination with shock absorbers of telescopic, double acting type. The front eye of the leaf spring is supported to the hanger through a serrated rubber bushing while the rear eye is connected to the shackle through a split type rubber bushing. The spring center is attached to the rear axle housing with U bolts through two rubber pads which are provided between the spring leaf and the spring seat, and between the bottom spring leaf and the spring U bolt seat. 12B-2 REAR SUSPENSION Fig. 2 Locating Work Stand to the Side Sill Fig. 3 Removing the Shock Absorber 1. Removal and Installation 1-1 Removal (1) Loosen the wheel nuts and after having jacked up the car, apply a work stand (rigid rack) to the point of the side sill designated in Fig. 2, and lower the jack. NOTE: 1. Application of the work stand to any point other than that shown in Fig. 2 may damage the side sill. 2. The point of the work stand application is provided with two beads on the side sill flange, and the work stand saddle should contact the portion between the beads. (2) Disconnect the upper end of the shock absorber and then the lower end installed to the spring U bolt seat. (Figs. 3, 4) NOTE: If it is not necessary to remove the shock absorber, leave the lower end connected to the spring U bolt seat. (3) Jack up the rear axle housing a little to such a degree as the axle housing clears of the spring seat. Then remove the spring pad and the spring seat. (4) Demount the spring assembly after removing the spring pin at the front end and the spring Fig. 4 Removing the Spring U Bolt Nuts shackle pin at the rear end. (5) Open the spring leaf clamp bands and remove the center bolt to disassemble the spring leaves. 1-2 Inspection and Reassembly Carry out inspections as follows and take remedial measures if defects are found through the inspections. (1) Spring Inspection (a) Check the spring leaves for wear and cracks. (b) Check each spring leaf, clamp, rubber bushing and silencer (rubber) for wear and loss of expansion force. REAR SUSPENSION 1 2B-3 Punching Fig. 5 Installing the Spring Center Bolt and Silencer (2) Klock Absorber Inspection (a) Check the shock absorber for oil leakage by damage of packings and seals, and the rod for bend. (b) Measurement of damping power is normally done with a tester. However, it may be tested by hand in absence of a tester. Give pumping motions to the shock absorber and if the shock absorber feels even resistance in full strokes of the motions it may be considered it is in good operating condition. (3) Leaf Spring Inspection and Reassembly Remove rust from each spring leaf using a wire brush and apply chassis black. Replace the silencers (rubber) with new ones. Assemble the spring leaves, and with center bolt collars installed at both ends of the center bolt, securely tighten the nuts. In order to prevent loss of tightness of the center bolt, punch the thread as shown in Fig. 5. Then install the leaf clips and securely fold them. (4) Check the axle bumper and carrier bumper for peel off, cracks and loss of expansion force. 1-3 Installation (1) Install the spring front eye bushings from both Fig. 7 Installing the Spring to the Axle Housing sides of the eye with bushing flanges facing outside. Insert the spring pin assembly from the body side and secure to the hanger (bracket) with the bolt. Temporarily tighten the spring pin nut. (Fig. 6) NOTE: The spring leaf No. 1 is provided with camber identification mark at its upper surface ( +, 0, ), and make sure the spring leaves carrying the same mark are installed on both sides of the car. Description Spring pin assembly to body 11 to 14.5 ft-lbs. (2) Install the rear eye bushings in the same manner as (1) above, and then insert the shackle pins from the outside of the car, and temporarily tighten the nut after installing the shackle plate. (3) Install the pads on both sides of the spring aligning the pad center holes with the spring center bolt collar, and then install the spring seat with its center hole through the spring center collar. Attach the assembled spring and spring seat to the axle housing with the axle housing spring center bore meeting the spring center bolt and install the U bolts, tightened to the specified torque.
