Typical applications Temperature control To control the flow of primary heating fluid, whether steam or hot water, to provide constant secondary temperature. pplication shows the use of pneumatic power (1) and electronic intelligence (2) on a steam to liquid heat exchanger. 2 Pressure control To control steam, water or air distribution lines at precise operating levels. The system shown is a complete pneumatic controls package using a controller (1) with pneumatic valve and positioner (2). 1 Flow control Used in conjunction with flowmeters to accurately control the flow of steam, gases or liquids. The example shows the use of an electronic controller (1) signalled from a DP cell (2). The controller delivers an electronic output to an electro-pneumatic positioner (3) on the valve actuator (4). Thermal oil control Thermal oil is sometimes used as the primary heating medium. The example shows a 2-port valve arrangement although some pipe circuits are designed to use 3-port valves. Spirax Sarco 2-port valves are available with bellows spindle seals, which are recommended in thermal oil systems. 6

Control valve sizing and selection Step 1 Determine the valve Kv Kv calculation is an iterative process requiring knowledge of valve dynamics, piping geometry factors, and outlet velocities. In practice, the sizing chart below is based on empirical values and will cater for most applications.
