SMC - provide products compliant to TEX Directive Outline of TEX directive Since st July 00, equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres within the EU is required to comply with the TEX directive. TEX directive Directive 9/9/EC Equipment and Protective Systems intended for use in potentially Explosive tmospheres TEX, New pproach directives and CE marking Directive 9/9/EC, known as TEX directive, is one of the directives based on the New pproach towards technical harmonization and standardisation. The New pproach is a new regulatory technique and strategy laid down by the European Council Resolution of 98, in order to allow free movement of goods within the EU market and to prevent barriers to trade. Products in compliance with all provisions of applicable directives (such as Directive 9/9/EC for TEX) must bear the CE marking. This is an indication that the products comply with the requirements of applicable directives and have been subjected to the conformity assessment procedure provided for in these directives. TEX definitions Potentially explosive atmospheres are atmospheres likely to become explosive due to local and operational conditions. The TEX directive regards explosive atmospheres which are defined as mixtures with air, under atmospheric conditions, of flammable substances in the form of gases, vapours, mists or dusts in which, after ignition has occurred, combustion spreads to the entire unburned mixture. (Quotation from Directive 9/9/EC) The following applications are explicitly excluded by the TEX directive and must comply with other specific standards: medical devices, equipment or safety devices to be used with explosive or chemically unstable substances, equipment for domestic and non-commercial environments with explosive atmosphere generated by leakage of fuel gas, personal protective equipment, offshore vessels, mobile units and means of transport. Certified equipment is designed to prevent the generation of ignition sources as defined by the standard EN7-: hot surfaces flames and hot gases mechanically generated sparks electrical sparks stray electric currents, cathodic corrosion protection static electricity lightning electromagnetic fields electromagnetic radiations ionising radiations ultrasonics adiabatic compression shock waves, gas flows chemical reactions Classification Potentially explosive environments are classified into zones in accordance with Directive 999/9/EC. These are: 0,, for gas explosive atmospheres 0,, for dust explosive atmospheres Zone 0 Category 0 Zone Category Equipment category Zone Category The TEX directive defines categories of equipment and protective systems, which can be used in the corresponding zones as per the following table. The TEX directive and the corresponding harmonised standards have extended the applicability of legislation to all the equipment that is intended for generation, transfer, storage, measurement, control and conversion of energy. Pneumatic equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres must, therefore, comply with the new legislation. Products, which do not contain any potential ignition sources, are out of the scope of the directive.
