The reverse angled load flank reverses radial stresses, reducing total stress levels by 20% compared to Q. Due to the significant safety risk, Boart Longyear drill rods should never be mixed with other manufacturers rods. Copyright 2013 Boart Longyear. All rights reserved. JOINT Load Efficiency Load Efficiency is the ratio of stress levels induced in the joint as compared to the midbody under a given load. As such, this ratio is a measure of the quality of the engineering design rather than material strength. RQ provides 50% load efficiency versus Q at 30%. JOINT STRENGTH 1 Material at the ends of RQ rods is heat treated to obtain 175% strength increase over the midbody. Joint Load Capacity can be estimated as the midbody strength, times the heat treated material strength increase, times the joint load efficiency. PERFORMANCE Pin Thread Wear Case Hardened Pin Threads Boart Longyear Patented RQ Thread After 60 make/ break cycles, the case hardened pin thread resists wear. Competing Thread After only 30 make/ break cycles, the non-case-hardened pin thread allows adhesion wear. Significant research and development over many years has resulted in a proven case hardening process which remains unmatched in the marketplace. The pin thread crest is case hardened to eliminate the transfer of wear material between threads. This adhesion wear occurs between threads of equal hardness, leading to galling, loss of thread form, and reduced load capacity. Case hardening maintains thread form and delivers all the benefits of the RQ design. V-Wall OVERVIEW V-Wall for Increased Productivity and Reduced Costs With up to 30% less weight in the drill string, productivity will increase while overall operation costs will be reduced. V-Wall Rods will: - Decrease operator fatigue in rod handling increasing safety and productivity. - Decrease fuel costs in rod transportation, and increase the fuel efficiency of each rig on the site. - Increase drill s rated depth capacity. For example, a drill rated to 2500 m HRQ will be able to manage a 3000 m HRQ V-Wall drill string. - Increase midbody flexibility, which is advantageous in wedging or steering applications, but does not reduce drill string stiffness during coring operations. The figure below demonstrates that the helical whirling response to normal drilling loads (pitch of the twisted corkscrew shape of the drill string) is identical for both standard and V-Wall rods. V-Wall for Faster Inner Tube Tripping Annular clearance between the core barrel and the interior wall of the rod is larger which enables faster core barrel descent speeds. When combined with Quick Descent core barrel technology, tripping speed increases up to 50%.
