OLDSMOBILE CLUB OF AMERICA EASTERN MA. GMO CHAPTER Issue #22 ROCKET POWER NEWSLETTER!! Ma March 2007 Spring Dust Off at Haskins May 6 Doug s Car is Back in the GMO By Dave Consoli The GMO has set May 6, 2007 for the Spring Dust Off show which will be held at Haskins Motorcars in Wellesley. The theme this year will be the Oldsmobile sign (one of the few left standing) and show cars will have the option of having their car photographed under the sign for a nominal fee (sample taken at last years show below). Make sure you mark May 6 on your calendar and send in your registration today. There is a flyer & registration form in this newsletter for your convenience. We will be meeting at Berejik Motors in Needham in March and April. It all began on a Saturday morning. I was having a cup of coffee; my wife was bathing the kids so I decided to check my e-mails. Afterwards, I decided to surf the net for a while and that s when I saw it! The mention of W-30 after any 1970 442 listing always gets my attention. As I read the ad, I noticed that the price was not bad for a real W-30, and the car was located in Connecticut. With phone in hand, I dialed the number and read on. I spoke to a gentleman who said yeah we put the ad in yesterday and we have received a ton of calls so far. I ll be here till 3:30. Now I must admit none of this story I am about to tell would be possible if my wife Karen wasn t the most amazing woman I have ever met. You see, we didn t have any concrete plans for that day, but it was Saturday and I just didn t want to disappear for the day at the last minute - it wouldn t be right. So I went upstairs into the bathroom. Karen had the kids in the tub and I told her I came across this listing for a 1970 442 W-30 and I think it would be a great opportunity to buy this car. It is a 3 hour drive each way and I will be gone most of the day so what do you think? She replied no problem, go ahead, have fun, good luck, and be careful. Off I went. I arrived three hours later, looked over the car and that s when I noticed the old registration in the glove box. It was in the name of Douglas Stavros. I had never met the man but I knew his name and I knew of the circumstances of his death, and that had been the GMO President before I had joined the organization. At that point, I was sure I had something special here. The man selling the car had said something about an estate sale but I never made the connection.
the other club officers could give to me during and after the negotiations. Two weeks later I consummated the Deal. To Mr. Kazanian s credit he sold the car to me although I was not the highest offer. I thanked him for his decision and he said, you know in a sense the car is going back home because not only did Doug live in the same area that Karen & I do but Doug loved the GMO and in my heart I think this is what Doug would have wanted. Art Kazanjian was his name. He sold all of Doug s cars for the estate and this was the last one. He had held on to it for sentimental reasons but was considering selling this one also. He had received better offers money wise, but I was able to offer him something that no other buyer could offer. My intention was to buy the car and give it a good home, but I also wanted to bring it back to the GMO - a tribute so to speak. I mentioned that it was my intention to gather photos and literature on Doug s involvement with the GMO and display them at the 2007 Dust off. The only problem was if I could convince him to sell it to me. After all, I had to purchase the car for what I perceived to be a fair value. That s when I called our president Paul Iantosca. He was in Arizona at the Barrett Jackson Auction, and I quickly brought him up to speed. He agreed that it would be great to do a tribute to Doug at the Dust Off yet he understood my position of obtaining value in case the car would be sold in the future. As usual, he offered any help that he or In closing, I just want to mention that I and one of my employees drove down to pick up the car on one of our flat bed trailers. During the 3 plus hour ride back we stopped on four occasions to make sure the car was secure on the trailer and no load shifting had occurred. At the end of the 200-mile trip back we were getting off the highway one mile from my house when one of the tie down straps let go and the car came three inches from being scratched or dented. Lucky? Or was Doug looking over us? July Nationals in Bowling Green, KY Transportation director Steve Economou reports that the Intercity Van Lines truck is filled to capacity with 5 GMO cars and everyone is getting ready to attend the Oldsmobile Nationals in Bowling Green, KY. If you haven t done it already, you should plan to attend this national Oldsmobile event which will have about 400 show cars on display, many parts vendors, and typically a display of vintage cars direct from the official Oldsmobile collection will be there.
The GMO has taken a full page color ad in the show magazine and will have a table to promote our club and Loyed Woodland s effort to restore his 1966 442 Brainbeau Olds race car. Plan to come, make it a vacation, and visit the Corvette Museum and assembly plant in Bowling Green, KY. 2007 GMO Dues purchased and had in his possession the original Brainbeau Olds 1966 442 in which he set the C stock record in 1966. He is in the process of restoring it to its racing trim and hopes to compete with it much like Sam Murray has with his replica of the 1967 Brainbeau Olds drag car. After the meeting, we all sat down to a buffet dinner feast consisting of a gourmet stuffed pork roast and all the trimmings. So far we have received 2007 dues payments from 87 GMO members. Last year we had 111 paid members so it is obvious that some of you recalcitrants haven t yet ponied up. You can find a renewal/application form on our web site http://clubs.hemmings.com/olds-gmo. Just fill it out & mail it to Ted Loranz 114 West St Medway, MA 02053 to make sure you are included in all the 2007 GMO activities. GMO Holiday Party a Big Success I don t think anyone went away hungry. 25 loyal GMOers were present at the holiday party hosted by Dave & Karen Consoli at their new home in Methuen, MA on Jan 7, 2007. Everyone arrived around 3:00 PM and we settled ourselves in with a round of beverages and sumptuous hors d oeuvres in Dave & Karen s spacious living room which was highlighted by a huge Christmas tree. We were treated to a special cake topped with a picture of Paul s 1971 W-30 convertible. President Paul Iantosca held a brief business meeting to bring everyone up to date on the OCA Nationals in Bowling Green, KY this summer. Loyed Woodland sent word that he had
