The flexibility of the polar backbone in the comb polymer is designed to allow the large molecules to collapse at low temperatures. As temperatures increase, the backbone swells, allowing the expansion of the molecule. This results in a desired thickening effect, while maintaining the other positive attributes gained from use of PAMA technology. mechanical shearing of the lubricant.
