BRING YOUR IDEA TO LIFE HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN BATTERY POWERED MODEL RACING CAR
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE YOUR MASTERPIECE... Here s a basic set of components and tools that you will need to bring your big idea to life. Follow the step by step instructions over the next few pages and have fun designing and building your own working model. SAFETY WARNING: Electric motor, sharp items, small parts (which may be a choking hazard) and hot glue means that this is not suitable for younger children under 3 years. Older children should have adult supervision. Hot glue should be carried out by an adult 6. 4. 8. 1. 2. 5. 7. 3. 10. 11. 14. 9. 12. 13. 1. 1x A4 Sheet of stiff paper 2. 1x Hot Glue gun and glue stick (Sold in craft stores such as Hobbycraft or similar) (Use by adult only) 3. 1x Pair of Scissors (To be used by adult only) 4. 4x Plastic Milk Bottle Tops 5. 1x MM28 motor with worm drive gearbox and output shaft (suitable for making toys, models, gadgets) and 3V battery box with on/off switch. (Sold in stores /retailers such as Maplin / Amazon and similar). (To be used by Adult only.) 6. Cellotape 7. 1x Plastic Drinking Straw 8. 1x 30cm Ruler 9. Solid Stick PVA Glue (eg:pritt Stick or similar) 10. 2x AA Batteries 11. 2x Wooden lolly sticks (approx 4-6 inches long) 12. 1x Wooden Dowel (approx 4 inches long) (diameter suitable to fit comfortably inside the straw) 13. Colouring pencils, tissue paper, sweet wrappers and anything else you want to use to decorate your masterpiece. 14. 1x Sharp Tool/Drill to make holes in wheels (To be used by Adult only)
STEP 1: ASSEMBLING YOUR BATTERY POWERED MOTOR & REAR AXLE 1. Assemble the worm drive gearbox as shown with the rear axle running through the drive wheel. 3. Connect the wires from the battery box to the motor contacts and then switch it on to check that it works! Take care to keep your fingers away from the moving parts. NB. Make sure the axle is rotating the right way for your car to travel forwards (To change the direction, first switch off the battery and then re-connect the wires the other way around) Ensure the switch on the battery box is in the off position and then insert the batteries into the battery box. 2. Switch off the motor whilst you make the rest of your model 4.
STEP 2: MAKING YOUR CHASSIS STEP 3: MAKING YOUR FRONT AXLE 5. With the switch on the battery box facing down (so that it will be accessible from the underside of your car), sit the motor housing on top of the battery box as shown and Cellotape together securely. 7. Cut your front axle (wooden dowel) to the right length. 9. Rest the lolly sticks on the front axel and (ask an adult to) hot glue in place. Then, Cellotape the wooden lolly sticks along the sides of the battery box (running parallel either side). Bend them together slightly at the end and tape in position to create the nose of your car. 6. Cut your drinking straw to cover 2/3rds of the length of the front axle. 8.
STEP 4: ADDING THE WHEELS 10. Next, the wheels! Ask an adult to carefully puncture the centre of the 4x milk bottle caps so that the front and rear axles can slide through. (Make sure that you get the hole accurately in the centre otherwise your wheels will not turn smoothly!) 12. Fix 1x wheel onto the front axle. Then slide it through the drinking straw before fixing the final wheel to the other end. Ask an adult to hot glue both wheels in place. NB. Make sure that you only glue the wheels to the wooden axle and not to the drinking straw! Slide 2x of your wheels onto each end of the rear axle and ask an adult to hot glue in place. 11. Time to test your chassis! Switch on and check that your vehicle works! 13.
STEP 5: MAKING YOUR CAR BODY SHELL 14. Now comes the creative bit! Using the template provided, cut out your racing car shell from stiff paper. (NB. Depending on the dimensions of your components & chassis you may need to adjust the exact dimensions of your shell to fit the template provides you with an idea of the basic shape to aim for.) 16. Now s a good time to decorate your car, whilst the shell can still be flattened for colouring etc Score along and then fold along the dotted lines. Test the shell on your chassis to check that it fits. (It should rest lightly on the rear axle but without touching any of the wheels or the moving part of the front axle). 15. Next, fold your shell into shape and tape it together / to the chassis front and back with some cellotape add any additional features (eg: spoiler or other decoration) 17.
FINISHED! 18. And there you have it! Your very own battery powered model racing car!!
