General Information The AMACO FA-44 Kiln has a maximum attainable temperature of Cone 03 (2019ºF, 04ºC). The FA-44 is equipped with the Select Fire Computer Control for precise control, convenience, and consistent results firing after firing. During every firing, pyrometric cones should be placed in the kiln so that they can be viewed through the peephole(s). This booklet contains a wiring diagram for the FA-44 kiln, Select Fire Controller and a parts list with accompanying drawing for the FA-44 and Select Fire. Before installing the kiln, consult these diagrams for recommendations on electric service, fuses, etc. Also included with this booklet is an AMACO Electric Kilns Installation/Operation/Maintenance manual, which includes important information about selecting a location for your kiln, firing guidelines, and do-it-yourself instructions for replacing elements. The enclosed supplement has complete programming and operating instructions for the Select Fire Controller. Place kiln at least 18 inches from any existing wall at the sides and back. Connect kiln to an electric circuit which corresponds to that stamped on the kiln name plate. HEATING ELEMENT REPLACEMENT If there is a defective coil in any element holder, the entire holder will have to be removed. Turn all switches to "Off" position so kiln is not energized. Remove metal protective guard on back of kiln. Work on only one plate at a time. Unscrew connectors on lead wires and slip element plate out through door opening. Since it is seldom necessary to replace a complete element plate, remove the damaged wire coil and re-wire with a new coil. Replace repaired element plate in kiln, make the same wiring connections and replace metal protective guard. Follow these steps for installing a complete new element or wire coil only: 1. Be sure that the fused safety switch and all regulating switches are turned to "Off" position so that the kiln is not energized. 2. Remove the metal protective guard on the back of the kiln. 3. Work on only one element at a time. Unscrew the connectors on the element terminals of that one particular element to be replaced. 4. Remove the element plate through the kiln door opening. 5. Replace at once with a new element plate or with the old element holder fitted with a new wire coil replacement. 6. Tighten the connectors on the wire ends which extend through the back of the kiln. 7. Repeat procedures 2 through 6 until all defective elements are replaced. When replacing wire coils only, observe carefully as the defective wire is removed and re-thread the new wire coil replacement in the same manner.
