GENERAL INFORMATION The purpose of this manual is to assist you in installing, operating and maintaining your GPI pump. It provides information which will help you achieve years of dependable performance and trouble-free operation. The system is approved for DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) only. Do not use with gasoline, diesel, other flammable fluids, or micro-encapsulated fluids. Using fluids, other than those for which the pump was designed, could lead to serious personal injury and void the warranty. Before operating your pump, read this manual thoroughly and also read the printed information on the outside of the carton in which your LP-50DEF-BRL pump was packed. For assistance, contact your dealer or the GPI Customer Service Department. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS The following safety alert symbols are used in this manual. INSTALLATION This pump is designed for use in a closed DEF barrel system. For proper installation, your pump requires a hose, nozzle and inlet hose (included with the system). In addition, a pump bracket kit designed for barrel mounting and either a RSV coupler or an EPV coupler (the couplers are specific to the DEF supplier barrel design) will be needed to maintain the closed DEF system. Kits for the pump bracket and both types of couplers are available from the factory and are listed as accessories on the Illustrated Parts List. Used pumps must be flushed and cleaned before installation as outlined in the Maintenance Section. Before Installing Pump Ensure that you have the following accessory items readily available: Assembled pump bracket kit and correct coupler to fit your barrel. Installing Pump The pump has a 2-inch NPS bung adapter at the inlet end. Remove the 2 NPT metal locknut and set aside. Attach inlet hose to pump inlet and secure with screw clamp. Tilt the pump slightly and insert the inlet hose through the hole in the pump bracket. Orient pump as shown. Slide the 2 NPT locknut over the inlet hose and onto the bung adapter and tighten securely against the underside of the pump bracket (Figure 1). DANGER DANGER indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury. F I G U R E 1 CAUTION It is your responsibility to: CAUTION indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury. Ensure that all equipment operators have access to adequate instructions concerning safe operating and maintenance procedures. Observe all safety precautions concerning safe handling of DEF. Avoid prolonged skin contact with DEF. Use protective goggles, gloves and aprons in case of splashing or spills. Change saturated clothing and wash skin promptly with soap and water. For your protection, thoroughly flush the pump before cleaning or repair. When you receive your pump, examine it for visible damage. If any items are damaged or missing, please contact your distributor. 2" NPT Locknut Inlet Hose Clamp Assembled Barrel Bracket Kit Place bracket with pump on top of barrel, position as shown (with bracket notches engaging rib of barrel rim) and secure to barrel with thumb screws, locking them in place with the double nuts. F I G U R E 2 EPV Coupler shown Clamp OPERATION Using fluids other than those for which the pump was designed could lead to serious personal injury and void the warranty. The pump system is approved for Diesel Exhaust Fluid only. Do not use with gasoline, diesel, other flammable fluids, or micro-encapsulated fluids. When handling fluids, always wear protective clothing such as goggles, gloves and respirators, as instructed by the fluid manufacturer. Install Hose and Nozzle Inlet hose If installing accessories such as meters or filters, do so before installing the hose and nozzle. Follow the manufacturer s instructions. F I G U R E 3 Clean any spills from the system exterior as they occur, following fluid manufacturer s instructions. Before Each Use 1. Keep pump exterior clean to help identify leaks. Before each use, inspect for leaks around seals or connections. 2. Make sure hoses are in good condition and connections are tight. 3. Make sure the work area is dry. MAINTENANCE Proper cleaning and maintenance is vital to prolong pump life and promote trouble-free operation. NOTE: Failure to follow recommended cleaning and storage procedures increases the chance of pump failure and may void the warranty. Remove Pump from Barrel Typical Installation CAUTION Make sure any hose and nozzle used are compatible with DEF. Slip one end of the hose onto the barbed pump outlet, install and tighten screw clamp. Slip the remaining end of the hose onto the barbed fitting on the nozzle, install and tighten screw clamp. Some fluid may spill from the pump during removal. Follow DEF label directions for cleanup and disposal. 1. Remove coupler and bracket/pump from barrel. 2. Place the nozzle into a receiving tank. 3. Open the nozzle to remove fluids from the system and actuate pump to empty any remaining fluid. 4. Clean external fluid from pump and components. 5. If the pump will not be used for more than 2 weeks, flush to prevent drying of fluids in the pump. Rev. A 921767-03 3
Flush Pump When the pump will not be used for more than two weeks, it must be flushed to prevent internal drying of fluid. It is strongly recommended, for protection from personal injury, that a simple flush tank be created. Use a container with a tight fitting lid with a minimum volume of five gallons (19 litres). Cut holes in the lid of this container large enough for the inlet hose and coupler to fit through. Fill the container with distilled water. Secure the lid tightly on the top of the container during use. 1. Refer to the Remove Pump From Barrel paragraph and follow those instructions to remove and drain the pump. 2. Place the inlet hose with coupler and the nozzle through the hole in the lid of the flush tank. (Figure 4) F I G U R E 4 Clean Pump If fluid dries inside pump, the residue could damage the pump if it is actuated dry. The residue is water soluble and dissolves very quickly. 1. Soak the pump in a container of distilled water for approximately five minutes, ensuring all pump cavities are water filled, to dissolve the residue. 2. At the end of the soak, actuate the submerged pump to flush water through the inlet and outlet ports. 3. Remove pump and actuate to remove any remaining water. LP-50DEF-BRL SPECIFICATIONS Coupler hose (coupler in bucket) Applications Fluids: Operating Environment: Diesel Exhaust Fluid Outdoor, operating temperature Range of +40 F to +100 F (+5 C to +38 C) 4"- 5" air space to lift coupler clear of water 3. Open the nozzle and actuate the pump to circulate distilled water through the pump for 10 to 15 minutes. Close and open the nozzle several times to flush interior nozzle components. 4. Lift the inlet hose with coupler from the water and actuate the pump briefly until only air passes through the system. 5. Drain the hose and nozzle and close the nozzle. Wipe entire system with a clean damp cloth. To avoid fluid exposure, follow fluid manufacturer s instructions for the disposal of contaminated water.
