OSNABRÜCK, GERMANY Osnabrück is the third-largest city in the federal state of Lower Saxony. More than 23,000 students enrolled at the Osnabrück universities live in the ancient cathedral town and bishopric with its 1,200-year-old history. The medieval town center with its carefully restored halftimbered houses offers a distinctive atmosphere for the catering and art trade. Only a short walk away modern arcades and pedestrian precincts are ideal for walks and shopping trips. Osnabrück is situated at the junction of important North-South and East-West connections. Cities like Hanover, Hamburg, Amsterdam or Berlin can be reached within a few hours by train or car. More than 400 pubs, bars and restaurants cater for all tastes and serve a variety of meals which range from traditional to exotic and from fast food to vegetarian. Cultural events play an important role in this city on the river Hase - several theatres stage dramas, operas and ballets, various museums offer changing art exhibitions and a variety of festivals range from modern (European Media Art Festival) to traditional ( MaiWoche ). Very popular among students is the Lagerhalle, an old warehouse which now serves as a meeting place with cafeteria, bar and a stage for live music and theatre. The zoo and the planetarium, cinemas and sports facilities offer the students opportunities to take well-earned breaks from their studies. 4 MORE INFO osnabrueck.de hs-osnabrueck.de historicgermany.travel Population 160,000 Currency Euro Time difference GMT+1
OSNABRÜCK UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES Hochschule Osnabrück Like most universities of applied sciences, Osnabrück UAS was founded in 1971. Already in 1968, the German government had described this new kind of higher education institution in which students should be educated for the professional world. This education was to have a scientific basis so that graduates would be able to work self-determined and take over responsibility. In differentiation from traditional universities that were oriented towards basic research, the new universities of applied sciences should be practice-oriented in both teaching and research. To ensure this practice-orientation, all professors at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences not only need a PhD-degree, but they also need to have at least three years of professional experience in business, industry or institutions. This fact also explains why Osnabrück UAS fosters strong ties with local and regional businesses and institutions through universityindustry-transfer. Professors and students successfully engage in contract research. Practical (co-op) phases as well as group projects are a natural component of every curriculum. Most students write their bachelor and master theses in cooperation with businesses and institutions and address real-life problems with the scientific knowledge they have gained. 5 hs-osnabrueck.de Guide for International Students University Videos
