With their high accuracy (+ 0.5% full scale), these sensors are ideal for applications requiring precision pressure monitoring and feedback. The complete range encompasses six types, providing analog pressure sensing capability from 0 to 3 psi. Temperature compensation plus protection against short circuits, overvoltage and reverse polarity are built-in to a compact, aluminum housing. Analog Pressure Sensors, Technical Data Pressure Sensor (Uses Piezo-Resistive Strain Gauge Principle) Supply voltage which is wired to the sensor s terminals is applied, through the internal circuitry which is laminated to the non-fluid side of the wafer, to the strain gauge. When the pressure applied to the input port of the sensor changes, there is a proportional change in the voltage and current output signals from the sensor. The design of the sensor isolates the pressurized medium from the gauge and electronic circuitry; the only concerns for suitability with a particular medium are compatibility with the aluminum housing and the silicon. Piezo-Resistive Strain Gauge The solid state piezo-resistive strain gauge is composed of four equal value resistors deposited within a silicon wafer. When pressure is applied to the wafer, the silicon stretches and the strain causes the values of the resistors to change. When the pressure is removed, the silicon returns to its unstretched condition and the resistors return to their original value. 1 Supply + V Amplifier and temperature compensation are included in the internal circuitry. All Festo type SDE-... pressure sensors have the same housing diameter, input port size and wiring connector. Therefore installation is standardized. Piezo- Resistive Strain Gauge A 3 V out P Silicon Wafer A V/I I out Supply 0V Aluminum Housing Wheatstone Bridge Circuit Pressure Sensor Strain Gauge Side Electronic Circuit Electrical Plug, -pin Contact points on the outer surface of the silicon wafer allow the strain gauge to be wired into a Wheatstone bridge circuit so that a constant supply voltage applied across two junction points of the resistors will produce an output across the other two junction points. The voltage and current of this output will vary in proportion to the value of the applied pressure (both are at minimum when applied pressure is zero), thereby providing an analog electrical representation of the pressure. Analog Pressure Sensors, Technical Data Pressure Gauge (Uses Bourdon Tube Principle) The Bourdon Tube When pressure is applied to the input port of the gauge, the pointer will rotate by an angular amount proportional to the applied pressure. The dial of the gauge is marked with a dual scale (bar* and psi) indicating the pressure range for which the gauge is designed. The input port, at the rear of the gauge case, has thread** for connection to a pressure tap in a pneumatic line. If a vacuum condition ever occurs in a pneumatic line to which a pressure gauge is connected, the reaction of the Bourdon tube will cause the gauge to attempt to move the indicator past the zero (0) dial marking. This action, sometimes called pegging the gauge, may cause strain on the linkage mechanism or the Bourdon tube itself. If pegging occurs frequently, the pointer (indicating needle) may be damaged and indicating accuracy of the gauge may be affected. For such conditions a compound (dual indicating) gauge should be used. * Bar is a pressure unit for which 1 bar = 1.5 psi ** Gauges are generally supplied with SAE straight threads. Bourdon Tube Gauge Case Pointer Shaft Mechanical Linkage (Details not shown) Duct from Connection Port on Back of Case The Bourdon tube (developed in the late 19th century) is the commonly used element for gauges to measure fluid pressure. It is a length of metal tubing which is bent into a circular shape. It has a round cross section at both ends to allow standard connections, but the rest of the tube is of oval or elliptical cross section. Capped at one end and connected to a pressurized line at the other end, any increase in the internal pressure (above external atmospheric pressure) causes the cross sectional shape to be distorted. This distortion causes the capped end of the tube to move outward from its normal (zero pressure difference) position. As applied pressure drops, the capped end moves back toward its normal position. When used in a pressure gauge, the capped end is linked to a mechanism which causes a pointer to rotate proportionally to the applied pressure. Subject to change 179
