3 Safety 3.1 General safety instructin Read and bserve the user manual and safety instructins in this chapter befre taking any further actin (transprtatin, strage, cnnectin, start-up etc.). Since the UPS equipment uses mains vltage and has a suitable energy accumulatr (high-capacity batteries) installed either inside r utside the device, the instructins in this chapter are very imprtant fr all users and persnnel. Fr this reasn, apprpriate safety instructins n the tpic f batteries and battery packs are als dealt with here. When using external battery packs, yu must als fllw the safety instructins in the accmpanying instructin manual. Wrk n the UPS equipment may nly be perfrmed by authrized technical persnnel. 3.2 Transprt and strage When string equipment, make sure that it is als securely psitined. The equipment must nt be transprted r stred upside dwn. Psitin the equipment securely during transprtatin taking its centre f gravity int accunt. Due t its weight, UPS equipment with integrated batteries may drp suddenly if its psitin shifts slightly. When string equipment, make sure that it is als securely psitined. 3.3 Placement The UPS is intended fr use in ventilated rms. During setup r installatin, the installatin lcatin prescribed by the manufacturer must be bserved. There is a risk f cndensatin where the UPS is expsed t extreme and rapid temperature changes. Befre taking any further steps, the equipment shuld be allwed t acclimatize fr at least 2 hurs. Never set up r perate the equipment in a damp envirnment. Keep fluids away frm the equipment. The UPS must nt be set up near heat surces. Ensure that the vents f the equipment are nt blcked and that the circulatin f air is nt impeded. MKD XL Series Page 7 f 42

3.4 Cnnectin Only cnnect the UPS t an earthed shck-prf scket r, where a terminal clamp is used, be sure t cnnect the prtective earth cnductr. Under n circumstances shuld the equipment be perated withut a prtective earth cnductr. The huse installatin scket must be easily accessible and lcated in the vicinity f the UPS. In the case f a fixed cnnectin, ensure that the shrtest pssible cable lengths are used. In case f generatr mde, there hast be a plarized cnnectin f the UPS. Only use VDE-tested and CE-labeled electrical cables t cnnect the cnsumer lad t the UPS. In the case f a fixed cnnectin t the cnsumer lad, a suitable cable must be used. The fuse prtectin fr the cnsumer lad must always be installed directly in frnt f it, and never centrally in frnt f the UPS. D nt perate any husehld appliances and pwer tls, e.g. fan heaters, vacuum cleaners, drills, hairdryers, tasters etc., via the UPS. D nt cnnect any cnsumer lads t the UPS which culd verlad the equipment (e.g. laser printers). The sum f the earth fault currents f all cnsumer lads cnnected t the UPS must nt exceed 3.5mA. Keep the cnnecting cables as shrt as pssible and always lay these crrectly. Avid the dangers f laying cnnecting cables in lcatins where they may be tripped ver, crushed r trn pen etc. 3.5 Operatin The mains pwer cable must never be discnnected during the peratin f the UPS, therwise the prtective earthing f the UPS and the cnnected cnsumer lads will be lst. Befre cnnecting cnsumer at the utput, the basic cnfiguratin (9.2.3) has t be made. The utput vltage with regard t the cnsumer and the utput frequency during battery service are very imprtant. The UPS equipment cntains an energy accumulatr (batteries). This means that the utput f the UPS may be live even if it is nt cnnected n the line side. T switch ff the UPS cmpletely, first press the switch n the frnt f the equipment (OFF psitin), wait until the UPS has switched ff then discnnect the pwer supply (switch ff the mains input externally r discnnect the UPS frm the mains, e.g. by unplugging it). Make sure that n fluids r freign bdies enter the UPS. MKD XL Series Page 8 f 42

T prtect the UPS, avid cnstant lad f the utput ver 80% (especially during battery service). The display f the utput lad is just suppsed t be a reference value. Separate measurements are necessary t ascertain the exact utput lad. 3.6 Handling batteries Warning danger f electric shcks and burns. Batteries can cause electric shcks and are capable f prducing high shrtcircuit currents which can als inflict burns. Unauthrized persns must be kept away frm batteries. D nt place batteries against heat surces and d nt thrw them int a fire as they might explde! D nt pen r destry batteries. The electrlyte thereby released is extremely dangerus t persns and t the envirnment (danger f chemical burns t skin and eyes, txic). Defective batteries must be dispsed f in an envirnmentally-friendly manner Never thrw batteries int the regular refuse. The lcal waste dispsal regulatins must be bserved. MKD XL Series Page 9 f 42

3.7 Maintenance, servicing and faults Warning danger f electric shcks. The lad-bearing capacity f the supprt must be sufficient. Observe the specified installatin lcatin and nly munt the equipment using the screw-in psitins. Make sure that ventilatin f the equipment is pssible at all times. As this UPS is ventilated in a crsswise and lengthwise directin, a minimum clearance f at least 50mm between the UPS and the cabinet in which it is installed must be maintained at the sides as well as at the frnt and back. Ensure an apprpriate flw channel. Make sure the equipment is arranged crrectly. When installed in parent systems (e.g. machine, cntrl cabinet), it must be ensured that the UPS perates within the specified temperature range. A sufficient level f frced ventilatin must exist t remve excess heat that builds up in the space where the UPS is installed. MKD XL Series Page 21 f 42

13 Maintenance and service Yu can expect a lng service life and truble-free peratin frm yur UPS equipment as lng as yu ensure that the necessary minimum level f maintenance is carried ut. Hwever, the reliability f the UPS is als significantly affected by envirnmental cnditins. The temperature and atmspheric humidity f the surrundings must be kept within the limits. In additin, the area arund the UPS must be kept as clean and free f dust as pssible. At the ideal ambient temperature f 22 C, the typical service life f the batteries is apprx. 4 years, but this service life can be substantially increased (t apprx. 8-10 years) by using special batteries. Yu shuld check at regular intervals (every 6-12 mnths) t ensure that the remaining bridging time is sufficient fr yur intended purpses. If this is nt the case, then it is time t replace the batteries. 13.1 Measuring and autnmy time Befre starting this prcedure, it is abslutely necessary t save all pen data. Als infrm all emplyees cncerned. There are essentially tw methds f measuring the autnmy time. Methd a) is suitable fr measuring the actual autnmy time, whereby the cnsumer lads will inevitably have zer current at the end f the bridging time. Methd b) enables the residual capacity t be determined after a specific autnmy time, whereby cnsumer lads will nt generally be left with zer current. T apply ne f the named methds, frce the UPS int supprt mde by switching ff the mains pwer supply. After perfrming the measurement, switch the mains pwer supply back n and start the UPS as nrmally using the buttns ON. Bear in mind that after the measurement the batteries will be discharged, i.e. the n-line/charging mde must have been active in the UPS equipment fr several hurs (min. 5 hurs) befre they are apprx. 80% peratinal again. If the supprt time is nt measured due t lcal cnditins r directives, we recmmend replacing the batteries every tw years as a preventive measure t avid the risk f inadequate supprt time due t battery deteriratin. 13.2 Replacing the batteries Befre yu prceed, take the safety infrmatin prvided int cnsideratin. Carry ut the wrk in the specified sequence. Always use safety tls. Befre yu start wrk, make sure that the UPS is switched ff and is discnnected frm the mains pwer supply. MKD XL Series Page 36 f 42
