Tekomar CYLUBE for Hansa Shipping
SAILING AHEAD Hansa Shipping implements Tekomar technology In today s shipping markets, it is increasingly difficult to improve the bottom line. The best option: significantly lower fuel and lube oil consumption. Hansa Shipping has achieved just that by implementing Tekomar XPERT and upgrading several ships with Tekomar CYLUBE. Hansa Shipping, based in Hamburg, Germany, has been providing shipping and freightage, operation and commercial management as well as chartering and many more maritime services since 1997. In early 2015 the fleet owners took additional initiatives to further optimise operations. They assessed the powerful performance evaluation system Tekomar XPERT (since September 2015 installed in 42 of Hansa s vessels) and also chose Tekomar CYLUBE to upgrade mechanical lubrication. A DECISION ON THE SPOT Beat Güttinger, co-founder and Head of Global Sales and Marketing at Tekomar, Switzerland, is still a bit amazed about how fast things went: We mentioned Tekomar CYLUBE to Hansa s managing director Peter Mackeprang when we discussed Tekomar XPERT. Having confidence in Tekomar from his experience with Tekomar XPERT, he immediately decided to implement CYLUBE on six vessels....compared to other products, installation is simple, delivery time is short, and the whole system may be managed via one single monitor. Peter Mackeprang, HANSA SHIPPING GmbH & CO. KG on the key factors for his decision THE FACTS 100 l/day cylinder lube oil savings from day one A further 100 l/day saving through step-by-step reduction to minimum feed rate Pay-back time of only around 1 year Installation 4 6 weeks after order (ship s schedule permitting) 2
YESTERDAY Diagrams, complex calculations, manual settings Traditional engine lubrication is prone to mistakes. Beat Güttinger explains: Everyone is afraid of under-lubrication. As a result, everyone tends to over-lubricate. And no wonder: With conventional systems you have to look at diagrams, do calculations. You need to know the values needed to have an engine run with optimum performance. Then you manually adjust settings in the engine room, screw by screw. Existing lubricators before installation. But the reality is: People are reluctant to change anything. They let the engine run as is. This really should not happen if you wish to have clean engines. It is detrimental when you refuel and the quality of the heavy fuel oil is not as it was before. And it is definitely a no-go if you wish to achieve lube oil reductions. 3
TODAY Automatic optimisation Tekomar CYLUBE is 70% more cost-efficient than any other system on the market. Unlike other options it works without touching the existing lubrication system. This facilitates the installation process and leaves the original parts fully funtional, providing 100% redundancy as manual settings may still be used if ever needed. Tekomar CYLUBE eliminates lubrication errors by upgrading the original mechanical lubricators. It acts as an electronically controlled, load and cylinder lubrication oil BN and fuel oil sulphur content dependent system. The optimum feed rate is set via a monitor in the engine control room. Peter Mackeprang: The control panel situated in the ECR is a very good tool for assisting the engineers in monitoring, evaluating and adjusting the cylinder lubrication. UP TO 30% SAVINGS Looking back on his decision in favor of Tekomar in February 2015, Peter Mackeprang concludes: The cooperation was very professional and based on good understanding and communication. Tekomar supported us very well during implementation and afterwards by providing prompt feedback and assistance. Tekomar CYLUBE M works as an add-on to the existing lubricator. We achieved about 20 to 30% of savings. It is at this time too early to make a statement about engine condition, but liner/piston condition seems to be improving as well. Peter Mackeprang The control panel is located in the ECR. GOING FORWARD Tekomar CYLUBE works with all engines employing mechanical lubricators. The next step, currently developed by Tekomar s engineers, will take the system s efficiency and ease of use another step further as Tekomar introduces single lubricator control (one lubricator per cylinder), making it also a very economic upgrade options for large bore and up to 12 cylinder engines. 4
THE SYSTEM A typical installation Tekomar looks at a vessel s ports rotation to facilitate the installation of their products, making everything as seamless as possible. Beat Güttinger: We want everything to work right away. That is why we require our clients to go through a detailed pre-inspection checklist. Once that is completed, we order the necessary parts. Six weeks later we are ready to roll. All parts are sent directly to the ship in one box. Installation and commissioning are carried out during normal operation without any off-hire period. Initial work begins during a port call. The engine is not immobilised at any time during the installation. Further work is completed while steaming. Final adjustments and commissioning take place during the next port call, followed by a short trial run. The entire process takes no more than three days. Subsequent crew training is completed within two hours supported by a comprehensive instruction manual. Anyone can manage the system though it is normally operated by the second engineer.
