FEATURE PROUT The R QuaLube Long Life Spherical Plain earing Seal Inner Ring ircumferential Groove ircular Lube hannels Outer Ring Tough applications in construction an material hanling requires a spherical plain bearing with longer life, less maintenance an less owntime than stanar spherical plain bearings. A bearing with total interchangeability to stanar esigns is preferre. R engineering evelope the QuaLube spherical plain bearing after observing the three preominant factors which contribute to the failure of spherical plain bearings: ) Uniirectional loas ) Heavy loas 3) Neglecte lubrication intervals Each factor contributes to a lack of lubrication in the loa zone area which eventually allows for metal to metal contact an premature failure of the bearing in the application. R engineering evelope the QuaLube spherical plain bearing to solve each of these three failure moes. The R QuaLube spherical plain bearing is manufacture within the same envelope imensions as stanar inch an metric spherical plain bearings. The lubrication system contains four precisely machine circular grooves on the spherical surface of the inner ring. Each circular groove is connecte by a lubrication groove aroun the circumference of the inner ring. The bearing is packe with an EP moly grease an is seale with lip contacts seals for grease retention. FEATURE PROUT The R QuaLube Long Life Spherical Plain earing Lubrication Flow Seal Seal Seal Seal onventional Spherical Plain earing R Qualube Spherical Plain earing The innovative esign of the R QuaLube interconnecting lubricating groove system ensures a more efficient istribution of the lubricant by proviing channels that transport the grease throughout the entire bearing, incluing into the contact area of the bearing uner loa. In cases of uniirectional loa or when lubrication intervals are misse, the groove system retains extra lubricant where it is neee for ae margin of performance. In the irtiest of environments the grooves an channels capture any irt or ebris an keep these contaminants away from the raceway surfaces. The R QuaLube long life spherical plain bearing maintains the same size capacity ratings as conventional bearings with the same envelope. They can immeiately replace conventional bearings without moifying housings or shafts. Shoul you have a nonstanar spherical plain bearing in your problem application, R can esign a QuaLube bearing specifically for your existing envelope sizes. FEATURE PROUT SpreaLock Seal Avance Seal Technology SpreaLock Seals for spherical plain bearings employ ouble positive contacting lips to keep the irt out an the lubricant in. ompare new SpreaLock Seal technology with single or ouble lip esigns oriente in one irection only. Positive, yet functional, sealing is one of the ongoing challenges in bearing esign. In our quest to evelop the efinitive seal that woul work more effectively with our spherical plain bearings, we aske several tough questions to help establish the esign priorities. How can we provie maximum protection against the entry of contaminants an wear ebris while maintaining proper bearing operation? How o we minimize seal wear an protect the seal from outsie amage? Also, we wante to maximize lube loss with constant pressure on the inner sphere, while maximizing lube replacement efficiency. Total Protection Package The esign of the outer ring retention groove an the sealing of the inner ring bore to shaft interface is critical to the total protection package. The groove profile is engineere to exert optimum pressure on the sealing surface, while reucing the seal profile exposure. Less profile exposure reuces the potential of amage an wear. Optimum pressure is the key to maximizing the lube-in/irt-out avantage an proviing the most efficient re-lubrication an purging. The integrity of the inner ring/shaft is essential to effective overall performance of the bearing. Even the most precise fit is subject to movement uner loa. Protective SpreaLock Seals block irt an retain lube to help assure stability of the interface. In aition, inner ring sealing is particularly important where re-lube is performe through the pin. Lube reservoir provies secon line barrier against contamination Stiff scraping lip keeps contaminants out. 40

FEATURE PROUT uralube TM Maintenance-Free Spherical Plain earings Avance Technology R's uralube self-lubricating spherical plain bearings provie long life in emaning applications. Grease-free operation is accomplishe through the use of a urable PTFE liner system that reuces friction between the spherical surfaces of the inner ring an outer ring. This proprietary liner system has been evelope for rigorous inustrial applications, an has been proven successful time an time again. Applications Self-lubricating bearings are being utilize in ski steer, telehanler, off-roa forklift, an wheel loaer applications primarily on the cyliners, as well as on the pivot points of such equipment. The benefits of using these bearings inclue improve fiel reliability an lowere warranty costs. uralube Self-lubricating Spherical plain bearings has also reuce the cost of ownership by eliminating the nee for zerk fittings, an costs associate with greasing an maintaining the bearings. Guielines for Use These are ry lubricant bearings an shoul not receive aitional lubrication. This will minimize entrapment of abrasive irt an grit. uralube bearings are imensionally interchangeable with stanar steelon-steel spherical plain bearings. uralube bearings utilize the same housing an shaft fits as stanar steel-on-steel spherical plain bearings, thus allowing for easier replacement. Require running clearance is evelope through initial compression of the self-lubricate liner material. 4

FEATURE PROUT ImpactTuff Avance Shock Loa Protection The ImpactTuff spherical plain bearing improves resistance to shock loas by 300%! In many rugge applications where substantial impact loas are common, spherical plain bearings can break an chip, aing to the high cost of warranties. In particular, suspension components in off-highway construction vehicles have been subject to abuse from impacting rocks or abrupt terrain changes. Often, the result is broken bearings resulting in costly machinery repair. Up to the hallenge The real challenge of the case carburize esign is being able to fracture the outer ring to facilitate assembly. We esigne a unique outer ring profile with a minimal notch exposure that permits controlle fracture through the softer inner core. The uctile inner core provies a high egree of protection against the evastating effects of impact an shock loas. ImpactTuff technology can be incorporate into almost any traitional R spherical plain bearing configuration. 44

FEATURE PROUT ImpactTuff rosslube (Single-Acting) Improve Lubrication istribution Technology A lean Solution esigne specifically for applications that involve high levels of irt or other contamination, the R rosslube spherical plain bearing utilizes the latest generation of lube groove esign technology. While this system greatly improves lube istribution, it also facilitates relubrication purging to flush out wear ebris an contaminants. The rosslube feature is particularly effective in usty, highly contaminate environments, such as kingpin applications in farm machinery. 45

FEATURE PROUT The R ShimPack -SA-3 ouble Acting Angular ontact Spherical Plain earing The R ShimPack ouble acting angular contact spherical plain bearing was evelope to ease the installation proceures require on the assembly line. Traitionally the bearing assembly was complete, clearance was measure an then the assembly was isassemble, shimme an reassemble. With the R ShimPack ouble acting angular contact spherical plain bearing, a spacer is preset an iniviually calibrate at the factory to provie the optimum amount of axial internal clearance. X Ol Metho of Shimming The cover plate has to be bolte own until all clearance in the bearing is eliminate an gap X measure. The cover plate is then remove an shims ae. The housing begins to fret an eteriorate as the outer ring slies because of the loose fit. The -SA-3 ShimPack ouble Acting Angular ontact Spherical Plain earing The bearing is mounte with a press fit an cover plate installe. The proper amount of clearance is alreay preset into the bearing at the factory. As the outer ring is press fit an axially clampe, it will not rotate an amage the housing. The R ShimPack ouble acting angular contact spherical plain bearing esign eliminates the sliing fit an allows a press fit of the outer ring. As the require clearance is etermine by R application engineers an set at the R factory, consistency is maintaine from size to size an bearing to bearing. The customer simply installs the R ShimPack ouble acting angular contact spherical plain bearing as he woul any other self-aligning spherical plain bearing, with no nee of concern as to the axial clearance or press fit of the outer ring. 50

FEATURE PROUT The R ShimPack earing in an Articulate Joint The use of the R ShimPack ouble acting angular contact spherical plain bearing in articulate joints in place of a tapere roller bearing offers many avantages. The misalignment capable -SA-3 esign means that costly line boring is no longer necessary. Alignment becomes less critical allowing the relaxation of bore tolerances an an easier assembly. Assembly also becomes easier as axial clearance no longer has to be set uring installation. irt an water, which woul estroy a roller bearing, are more easily tolerate with the -SA-3 esign. Misalignment from shaft an housing bore wear have less effect on the R ShimPack ouble acting angular contact spherical plain bearing than on a roller bearing as contact geometry is critical to successful roller bearing operation. Like all R spherical plain bearings, the R ShimPack ouble acting angular contact spherical plain bearing is mae to withstan the harsh environment seen by off-highway vehicles. The -SA-3 esign is much more tolerant than tapere roller bearings to rough conitions an seal amage. Overloas an shock loas which lea to early failure in tapere roller bearings are better tolerate by the R ShimPack ouble acting angular contact spherical plain bearing esign. The R ShimPack ouble acting angular contact spherical plain bearing is the bearing esigne specifically for articulating joint applications. 5

SPHERIAL PLAIN EARING EN GI NEER ING asic Raial earing e sign spherical plain bearings have spher i cal contact surfaces which per mit the inner ring to rotate free ly in all i rec tions within bear ing an ap pli ca tion esign con straints. This gives them the ca pa bil i ty to selfalign, which means, for ex am ple, to ajust au to mat i cal ly to mis align ment stem ming from in ac cu rate machining, frame is tor tions from weling, or e for ma tions of pin an frame ue to static an ynamic forc es. Such mis align - ment woul gen er ate con si er able en loa ing an cause early failure of plain cy lin ri cal sleeve bearings. Thus spherical plain bear ings are thought to have their origin as re place ment for plain cy lin ri cal sleeve bear ings or bushings an are still occasionally calle ball bush ings. The first moern raial spher i cal plain bearing ha a non-frac ture outer ring with a loaing slot slight ly wier than the inner ring with (figure ). Such a bearing can easily be assemble an is as sem ble simply by rotating the in ner ring 90 eg out of plane to where it fits through the loa ing slot. ecause the loaing slots take away a sig nif i cant portion of the contact area, raial an thrust capacity in the irection of the loaing slots are af fect e. The bearing is sensitive to the ori en ta tion of the loaing slots with respect to the main loa irection. Lubricating with grease is prob lem at ic. It may be lost pre ma ture ly by escaping through the loa ing slots. Yet, this type of bearing is still mae toay for applications where the outer ring cannot be fracture, either because the outer ring ma te ri al is too soft for fracturing, or because of application requirements which cannot tolerate a frac ture outer ring. Snap Ring Figure : ouble Fracture Outer Ring The R Single Frac ture e sign The requirement to keep outer ring halves together an properly aligne eventually spawne the single frac ture esign. This R feature is the inustry stanar toay. After being frac ture at a single point on its cir cum fer ence, the outer ring is still a sin gle piece (figure 3). To as sem ble the inner ring, the outer ring must be sprea open far enough to let the inner ring pass through. The plane of fracture is 90 eg from the lubricating holes for both sin gle an ouble fracture outer rings. Note: The fracture in the outer ring is intentional. 64 Figure : Outer Ring with Loaing Slots The loaing slot bearing even tu al ly evolve into a bearing with a fracture outer ring. Initially, outer rings were ouble frac ture, followe later by a single fracture esign. oth esigns get by without a loaing slot an are insensitive to the ori en ta tion of the fracture plane with respect to the loa i rec tion as long as the outer ring maintains a press fit insie a suf fi cient ly rigi housing bore. A ouble fracture outer ring consists es sen tial ly of two segments of ap prox i - mate ly equal size an a means of holing the bearing as sem - bly to geth er (figure ). After press ing the bearing into a housing bore, the fracture surfaces of the two outer ring halves interlock perfectly. The fracture line cannot be felt. It follows that outer ring halves can not be interchange among bear ings an must not be inavertently ro tat e 80 out of po si tion. Figure 3: Single Fracture Outer Ring It is not an in i ca tion of a efective bear ing. In typical applications, spherical plain bearings sup port heavy static loas allowing for initial misalignment. y nam ic ap pli ca tions are lim it e to slow os cil la tions an ro ta tions be low the rec om men e maximum pv-value (pressure * velocity). The pv-value is use to measure the amount of heat gen er at e by the bearing. Spherical plain bearings can operate above the rec om men e pv-value, but only un er special lubrication con i tions. Metric spherical plain bearings have evolve if fer ent ly from inch i men sion al bearings, not just in their geometry, but also in their loa ratings. For comparable inner ring bores, met ric bear ings have a smaller out sie iameter an a small er with, but by convention, their permissible static contact pres sure is higher. (See section LOA RATING).

More Raial earing esigns R QuaLube esign With few exceptions, steel-on-steel spherical plain bearings use in ynamic applications must be relubricate perioically. To be effective, the grease must penetrate into the contact area between inner an outer ring. If a bearing is subject to a uniirectional loa, it must be unloae uring relubrication or only a minimal amount of grease will ever reach the contact area. Most of the lubricant will accumulate in the unloae zone an eventually exit without benefiting the bearing service life. The QuaLube esign solves the lubricant flow problem of bearings where the loa acts always in the same irection. The aitional circular grooves on the spherical iameter of the inner ring allow grease to flow into the contact area even with the bearing uner loa. The grooves help to collect wear ebris which is purge from the bearing uring a subsequent relubrication cycle. Heavy Section In a typical bearing application, the inner ring mounts on a shaft an its face abuts against a shouler. If the bearing must support significant thrust loas, the shouler iameter shoul match the outsie iameter of the inner ring at the face to minimize contact pressure. See the catalog pages for this imension. A tilting outer ring will eventually make contact with this shaft shouler, which efines the bearings maximum tilt angle (figure 4). AUTION: The actual tilt angle of a bearing assembly may be limite by the esign of surrouning components. a Tapere ore Inner Rings earings with heavy section inner rings are also available with a tapere bore, see series T-L (figure 6). The taper is :8 or.5" per ft on iameter. There are main reasons for using a tapere bore bearing: To prevent rotation between inner ring bore an shaft. To control the iametral clearance of the bearing assembly. As the inner ring is force up the tapere pin, its outsie iameter expans effectively reucing the iametral clearance. ylinrical ore AUTION: Reucing the operating clearance below 0.00" (0.05mm) may increase bearing friction an wear rate. A substantial thrust force in the irection of the large en of the taper may cause aitional inner ring expansion which coul lock up the bearing. Figure 6: Heavy Section Inner Ring ylinrical vs. Tapere ore Tapere ore Extene Inner Rings For applications with substantial outer ring tilt, for example yoke supporte ro ens of some hyraulic cyliners, R offers raial bearings with extene inner rings (figure 7). Using a bearing with an extene inner ring obviates the nee to a separate spacers to the bearing assembly to create the axial space require by the outer ring housing. AUTION: Spacers an inner ring extensions increase the istance between pin supports. At high loas, pin eflection may become a problem. Figure 4: Maximum Tilt Angle To increase the tilt angle of a stanar bearing, the with of the inner ring must be increase. ut simply increasing the with is not sufficient because there woul be no inner ring face left if we i not also reuce the insie iameter of the inner ring. These inner rings with greater with an wall thickness form the heavy section series H-L (figure 5). For a given shaft size, the heavy section bearings have greater misalignment capabilities an a greater loa carrying capacity compare to the stanar series at the cost of increase overall imensions. Outer Ring Extene Inner Ring Stanar Inner Ring Figure 7: Stanar vs. Extene Inner Ring uralube Maintenance-Free earings R offers maintenance-free bearings consisting of a chromium plate inner ring, an outer ring with a bone PTFE liner an seals. The liner provies excellent loa bearing capacity an a low wear rate (figure 8). Seale earings Except for the very small sizes, all raial spherical plain bearings can be orere with integral seals. Their function is twofol, retain the lubricant as much as possible insie the bearing an slow the ingress of contaminants. Rubber or plastic seals work best in bearings which experience circumferential motion or very frequent tilting, which tens to keep the contact surfaces clean. The seals are not effective at scraping off paint or accumulate an harene irt uring an occasional tilting motion. AUTION: single acting angular contact bearings mounte in an X configuration a fair istance apart may bin if there is an appreciable temperature ifference between shaft an housing. Allow for thermal expansion or use O configuration. Angular ontact earings Single Acting Angular contact bearings, R series -SA, are intene for applications with thrust loas exceeing the capability of a raial bearing. Angular contact bearings can support both raial an thrust loas. Single acting bearings are separable an support thrust loas in only one irection (figure 9). To support heavy thrust loas in both irections, use either single acting bearings mounte in an O or X configuration (figure 0) or consier a ouble acting bearing, see below. Angular contact bearings o not have the misalignment capabilities of raial bearings, in fact, the angle of misalignment is generally quite small. X - configuration O - configuration Figure 0: earing Arrangement Fr Fa with an axial clearance preset at the factory. A shim pack inserte between the two outer rings etermines the actual clearance. The thickness of this shim pack may iffer from one bearing assembly to the next, therefore care must be taken not to mix components from ifferent assemblies. The ties of each bearing shoul only be cut immeiately before installation. Figure 9: Angular ontact earing. Single Acting. Permissible Loa irections ouble Acting ombining two single acting angular contact bearings into a singular unit yiels a ouble acting bearing with a heavy section inner ring, the R series -SA3 (figure ). This type of bearing is often use as a locating bearing because it can support much heavier thrust loas than a stanar raial bearing. Like a single acting bearing its angle of misalignment is limite. The heavy section inner ring allows a tapere bore with the same avantages an isavantages as escribe above. As in all angular contact bearings, the proper axial clearance after assembly is critical. To eliminate the nee for external shims, R prouces these bearing assemblies AUTION: o not interchange components of ShimPack earings. The shim pack spacer is an elastic component. To prevent excessive elastic or plastic eformations, the catalog pages list a recommene shim pack compression force (figure ). Such a compression force coul be generate by an en plate being tightene own with a number of bolts. As long as the clamping force oes not excee the recommene shim pack compression force, the liste axial bearing clearance will be maintaine. lamping beyon that limit will start to plastically eform the shim pack spacer an reuce the axial bearing clearance accoringly. Unless such an effect is actually intene, the assembly instructions shoul specify a maximum tightening torque for the bolts. AUTION: Observe the maximum recommene shim pack compression force. 66

Fr Fa Loa Ratings oth inch an metric bearings con sist of the same high quality, high strength bearing steel, with a strength of material of 85,000 to 300,000 psi [965 to 069 MPa]. In most applications the bearings are mate with shafts an hous ings mae of lower strength steel, which makes it impossible to realize a contact stress level ap - proach ing this magnitue. For practical pur pos es, the bearings must be own rate to a level where they can safe ly work with lower strength mat ing components. (See also sections on housing esign, shaft esign, typical failure moes). Ap pli ca tions with loas in excess of the recommene loa limits are possible but shoul be reviewe by R engineering. y convention, the permissible contact stress has been efine if fer ent ly for metric an inch i men sion al bear - ings. A) Inch imensional earings The maximum recommene static contact pressure is 50,000 psi [345 MPa]. The max i mum recommene ynamic contact pressure is 5% of that or,500 psi [86 MPa]. The spherical contact surfaces are pre ci sion groun. Inner an outer rings are phosphate treate prior to coating with a ry film lubricant (MoS ). The inch an metric raial bear ings escribe in this cata - log meet the requirements of series 3 of ANSI/AMA St. Except for the larger sizes, the outer rings of raial bear - ings are single fracture which allows assembly of the inner ring. Larg er bearing sizes have ouble fracture outer rings an can be is as sem ble if necessary. These bearings carry the suffix -9L. The fracture rings may be slightly out-ofroun in the free state, but will roun up when mounte in a prop er housing bore. It is gen er al ly not necessary to orient the frac ture plane relative to the loa irection. Working Loas Fa F A STATI - The static loa limits given in the tables are safe bearing operating loas, provie housing an shaft are sufficiently rigi to prevent excessive eformation. YNAMI - Applications are consiere to be ynamic if the bearing is subject to more than initial misalignment or an occasional oscillation. Spherical plain bearings are best suite for oscillating motion as in hyraulic cyliners. The ynamic bearing loa for grease lubrication shoul not excee: a) the ynamic capacity given in the tables an b) a pv value (pressure * velocity) of 0,000 psi * ft/min. Operating onitions TEMPERATURE - The maximum operating temperature of seale bearings is limite by the seal to 50 eg F. Stanar bearings without seals can operate without moifications from -60 eg F to + 350 eg F. For operation below -60 eg F an above +350 eg F, up to +500 eg F, it is recommene to use bearings temperature stabilize at the factory. For operation to +000 eg F an at cryogenic temperatures, contact R engineering. ENVIRONMENT - Stanar bearings are phosphate treate an coate with a ry film lubricant (MOS ). This surface treatment provies a certain protection against corrosion from atmospheric conitions an an occasional splash. Aitional protection shoul be supplie for operation in continuously wet environments by aing internal or external seals. R can supply bearings with special coatings for unerwater applications. Ingress of har soli particles like ebris, san, grit an mu will accelerate the bearing wear an may clog lubricating holes. The bearing shoul be protecte from exposure to soli particles. Mounting - Fracture Outer Rings earings with single or ouble fracture outer rings (series -L, H-L, M, MH) shoul be mounte with an interference fit in the housing. The interference fit corrects any out-of-rounness of the outer ring ue to the fracturing process an will make the fracture line functionally invisible. For light loas of less than 0% of ynamic capacity, an ISO N7 fit may be use. R recommens using an ISO R7 fit whenever possible. The internal bearing clearance can accommoate the reuce spherical iameter of the outer ring cause by an R7 press fit. An even heavier press fit may be require in applications with heavy shock loas, a rotating loa on the outer ring, or when the housing is mae from a light metal. In the case of heavier fits, the mounte iametral clearance must be reviewe. Mounting - Soli Outer Rings The bearings with non-fracture outer rings are the single an ouble acting angular contact series -SA, M- SA, -SA3. While the outer rings of single acting angular contact bearings may be heavily press fitte, it is often esirable to maintain axial ajustability for ouble acting bearings. An ISO N7 fit is still light enough to move outer rings axially in the housing bore without too great a force. AUTION: Outer rings of angular contact bearings subject to heavy thrust loas must not be clearance fitte. Mounting - Inner Rings, ylinrical ore It is generally recommene to press fit the inner rings where feasible to prevent rotation taking place between inner ring bore an shaft. If assembly or operating conitions require a loose fit, it is preferable to let the inner ring slie on the shaft rather than the outer ring rotate in the housing. Mounting - Inner Rings, Tapere ore Heavy section inner rings of the series T-L an T- SA3 feature a tapere bore with a taper of :8 (.5" per ft on iameter). Tapere bores are useful to prevent inner ring rotation on the pin an to control the iametral bearing clearance by expaning the inner ring. To ensure sufficient operating clearance for the bearing, the inner ring clamping forces given in the table shoul normally not be exceee. Housing esign To safely support the high loa capacity of spherical plain bearings, the housing must have sufficient strength to avoi excessive eformation an fatigue failure. ertain housing types like cyliner ro eyes an pivot brackets uner tensile stress experience maximum stress at points perpenicular to the line of force. To obtain the maximum tensile stress, multiply the normal tensile stress of the total cross section by a factor foun in figure 6. The result must be less than the enurance limit of the housing material. STRESS ONENTRATION FATOR 0 8 6 4 0 4 6 8 0 / POINTS OF MAX. STRESS Housings must be sufficiently strong to prevent excessive outer ring eformation. Sufficient housing strength can be achieve either by a great enough wall thickness, here expresse as a ratio of housing outsie iameter ivie by housing bore, or by selecting a higher strength material. The effects of housing wall thickness an strength on available bearing capacity can be observe in figure 7. Fa Ps HARENE SPAER Ps Fa 70 Shaft esign With the exception of bearings uner light loa an press fitte inner rings, it is generally recommene that shafts or pins be heat treate to a surface harness of HRc 55 min an have a surface finish of 3 rms. Uner ynamic operating conitions an with a loosely fitte inner ring, it must be expecte that rotation takes place between inner ring an shaft. Uner very heavy loas, even an interference fit oes not guarantee that the inner ring will not rotate on the shaft. Thrust loas on raial bearings are transmitte via the face of the inner ring. The contact stress of this annular area shoul be checke against the yiel strength in compression of the shaft material or any spacer which may be use. Even uner static conitions, it may be necessary to haren the shaft shouler to prevent plastic eformation. Harene spacers with a tapere O may be use if the shouler cannot be heat treate (figure 8). Lubrication Stanar R spherical plain bearings are phosphate treate an coate with a ry film lubricant (MoS ). This surface treatment is sufficient for static applications an occasional movements. If use in a ynamic application, the bearings must be lubricate with oil or grease. Oil Lubrication - Steel-on-steel bearings operating in an oil bath can be essentially maintenance-free. This can be accomplishe by enclosing the entire bearing assembly in a gearbox style structure or by mounting spring loae lip seals next to the bearings. The latter is only feasible in applications with very little tilting motion. earings subject to large egrees of tilting will require an oil fille boot. Note: The integral seals of spherical plain bearings are not suitable for sealing against oil pressure. For oil lubrication at ambient temperature use #90 gear oil. Figure 8: Reuce ontact Pressure by Using a Harene an Tapere Spacer Grease Lubrication - It is recommene that the bearings be thoroughly lubricate with grease at the time of installation. Lubrication after installation may make it ifficult for the grease to penetrate into the loa zone. Failure to o so may cause surface amage to the bearing rings uring the critical run-in perio. Steel-on-steel bearings must be relubricate perioically epening on operating conitions. The frequency an efficacy of relubrication greatly influence the ultimate bearing service life. For example, more frequent relubrication is necessary if the bearings operate in a irty an usty environment. The grease flow through the bearing helps purge contaminants. Raial bearings can be relubricate either through the shaft or the housing. In those cases where rotation between inner ring bore an shaft must be expecte, relubrication through the shaft helps to lubricate that interface. To become effective, the grease must be able to reach the contact area between inner an outer ring. In applications where the loa irection alternates, e.g. the push-pull type action of a hyraulic cyliner, the grease will be move aroun ue to the ifferent inner ring positions. y contrast, in applications where the loa always acts in the same irection, e.g. in some suspension systems, grease will not be able to flow into the loa zone, if the bearing is relubricate uner loa. For effective lubrication, the bearing must be unloae. Alternatively, use the R evelope bearing with special lubricating grooves, the QuaLube series, which permits relubrication uner loa. See also section More Raial earing esigns. Angular contact bearings with extene lubrication grooves, series -SA- an -SA3-, have lubricating grooves extene to the small iameter of the outer ring to facilitate grease flow through the bearing while uner loa. Angular contact bearings without these lube groove extensions shoul not be relubricate while uner heavy thrust loa or air may become trappe in the grease passages which will expell the grease promptly. Recommene grease type: for operating temperatures between -40 eg F an +50 eg F, use a lithium base grease, NLGI Grae, with EP an MoS aitives.
