AMA CHARTER 1040 GOLD LEADERSHIP CLUB Bradford s Briefing by Bradford Walters I s it autumn already? Trees are losing their leaves and it was 52 degrees yesterday morning where I live. It has always been said if you don t like the weather around here, wait. Just a few weeks ago it was 100 plus for 5 days and now rainy and cool. That s okay as the forecast is calling for 90 s again mid-week. Next Sunday, August 19th, is our annual picnic and it looks like we should have some good weather. There will be a Fun Fly starting at 10 am. The theme will be Cub Fest so all that have a Cub, bring them out to the field. The Fun Fly contest will be a parachute drop. Remember to watch your airplane after the drop and not the chute. I have watched a number of pilots fly their planes into the ground because they were watching their drop. Food for the picnic will be served around noon. I would like to give Bob Breckler special recognition for spreading the mulch around the pit area. Thank you very much Bob. September 9th is Grandparents Day and Blue Max will be giving an introductory demo flight for Girl Scout Troop 262 and maybe we will be able to recruit a grandparent or two. Please remember when you are starting your nitro engines to go around behind the propeller to remove the igniter or to tune your engine. Remember to fly safely and don t fly alone. Fly with a friend. See you at the field and the meetings. THE ANSWER TO JULY S NAME THAT PLANE Bob Wisinski was the first person to guess it correctly and will get a free raffle ticket at the August meeting. Mike Melendy, Larry Bochenko, and Elvin Servellon also answered correctly. Built in greater numbers than any other combat aircraft in history, this aircraft was one of the most important Soviet types fielded in action over the Eastern Front in WWII. The aircraft featured a heavily armored shell for its two-man crew which formed an integral part of the structure. Tested as a 2-seater, by production it lost the rear gunner s position. AUGUST S NAME THAT PLANE What aircraft was scratch built and designed solely for racing by 2 civilian designers in a time when the military dominated the racing scene? This aircraft was the first to do what in air racing history? What was its name? Send all responses to Bradford Walters at Bradford@thehoverzone.com.
