Innovative technology GEMÜ is a leading world-wide manufacturer of high quality valves, measurement and control systems. Our owner Fritz Müller's invention of the fi rst plastic solenoid valve world-wide for the electroplating industry was the foundation stone of GEMÜ in Ingelfi ngen in 1964. Since then the company developed internationally with a large number of production and sales companies. Since its foundation, plastic valves and fl owmeters and the processing of plastic materials have been one of GEMÜ's core competencies. This brochure will give you an overview of our plastic range and its areas of application. GEMÜ provides engineered control solutions for a large number of process and engineering plant, such as: Industrial plant and machine construction Automobile industry Water / waste water treatment Chemical industry Steel works Mining and metal extraction Power stations Shipbuilding industry Petrochemical industry Paper industry Pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries Foodstuff and beverage industries Microelectronics and semiconductor industries State-of-the-art factory equipment and machinery plus a motivated team ensure the best service through our world-wide network of distributors and stockholding subsidiaries. We are constantly making investments in order to optimise our existing products and to develop new products.thus we can provide technical solutions for individual applications. Product applications Brackish water treatment and boron decontamination Brackish water treatment in a region of the Eastern Mediterranean. The amount of drinking water to be treated daily is 6,500 cubic metres. The boron content in the raw water is available as boric acid at an amount of 1.0-2.5 mg/ per litre. The boron content is reduced to less than 0.25 mg/per litre. The system includes various fi ltration stages, several ion exchangers with an additional stage for boron as well as a fi nal reverse osmosis process. GEMÜ 690 and 677 plastic diaphragm valves in PP in DN 25-100, GEMÜ 1435 positioners and butterfl y valves are used in the system. Treatment of leachate from a rubbish dump Treatment / detoxifi cation of leachate from a rubbish dump. The pre-treated raw water is treated in a three-stage reverse osmosis process to keep the fi ltration residues as low as possible. The system is PLC controlled and operates fully automatically under constant monitoring. If the limiting values are exceeded by scaling or fouling, the system is automatically turned off and cleaned by CIP equipment to reduce biofouling. The system is equipped with GEMÜ S660 and S670 SilverLine plastic diaphragm valves with PVC-U valve bodies. Softening water for pharmaceuticals according to USP/EP The production of water for pharmaceuticals always consists of a series of treatment processes. The softening of the water is normally the fi rst step of the chain of treatment. It ensures that hardness forms such as calcium and magnesium are removed and the following processes are not infl uenced by them. In order to minimise contamination and the formation of a biofi lm as far as possible, the system illustrated is sanitised at regular intervals without using chemicals. This process takes place approx. once per week and is triggered fully automatically. GEMÜ 690 and 677 plastic diaphragm valves are used. The pneumatic valves are equipped with electrical position indicators. GEMÜ 850 variable area fl owmeters are also used. Plastic valves and flowmeters I Product applications 5

Product applications Mobile drinking water treatment Drinking water is normally sterilised with the help of chemicals, e.g. chlorine. An innovative chemical-free process is used for this system. Initially the raw water is freed of suspended matter and organic particles by fi ltration. A chemical-free disinfectant solution is dosed into the downstream decontamination, creating sterile drinking water which remains fresh and drinkable for several days. The disinfectant solution is produced directly in the device. The system operates with plastic solenoid valves GEMÜ 52, DN4, 24VDC. The valve bodies are in PVDF, the seal material is made of PTFE. Ultra purification of high purity water The quality of the high purity water used in the production facilities of a research laboratory where special wafers and test wafers are produced is of paramount importance. The water required is used in the most varied steps of wafer production. The additional purifi cation process is carried out using a polisher and secondary ultrafi ltration (0.04 μm). The polisher is an ion exchanger fi lled with a special resin. GEMÜ 690 and 677 valves in PVDF-HP and variable area fl owmeters are installed for all treatment processes, the distribution and recirculation of the media. Surface finishing for steel screws In order to protect various metal parts against corrosion, surfaces are fi nished using electroplating. First, the parts which are manufactured from steel are degreased, cleaned and freed of materials which impede coating. Following this, they are immersed in an electrically conductive liquid (electrolyte). The application of direct current causes the anode material to be deposited on the surface (cathode) of the parts to be fi nished. The system consists of various immersion basins in which cages containing the parts are immersed. GEMÜ 617 and 677 manually operated and GEMÜ 600, 610, 690 and 667 pneumatically operated plastic diaphragm valves are used. GEMÜ 52-225 solenoid valves are used in neutralisation for HCl and NaOH dosage. 6 Plastic valves and flowmeters I Product applications

Ultrasonic cleaning Ultrasonic cleaning systems are used for high-grade cleaning in the care and maintenance of tool moulds. The parts to be cleaned are fi rst of all subjected to ultrasound in an alkaline solution at at temperature between 60 C and 80 C. After this, the parts are rinsed with clean water at up to 60 C. The third rinsing process is carried out at up to 60 C with fully demineralised water. Then the parts are dried in hot-air under vacuum. The control and dosing of the cleaning agents and rinsing fl uids is realised via GEMÜ 710 pneumatically operated 2/2 and 3/2- way ball valves. The volumetric fl ow rate is set with manually operated GEMÜ 617 and 677 diaphragm valves. The fl ow rate is optically indicated by GEMÜ 800 and 850 variable area fl owmeters. Testing device for condoms The quality and the protective factor of safety and hygiene articles such as condoms and surgical gloves made of latex (natural rubber) for example, is only provided if these articles also hold out against the requirements unter extreme loads. The test samples are individually slipped onto testing pistons manually. A sterile saline solution which is stored in a tank above the testing area is used as the testing medium. The testing solution is dosed into fi lling tubes using a valve and then fi lled into the test samples via outlet valves. The control of the saline solution in the process is effected via GEMÜ 102, 105 and 205 solenoid valves with PVC-U bodies and EPDM seals. Pickling of rolled strips in a steelworks An oxide layer forms on the surface of the steel when it is rolled to sheet metal. These oxides are removed by hydrochloric acid HCl or sulphuric acid H 2 SO 4 as well as caustic soda. This is called pickling. The processes take place at operating pressures up to 6 bar and temperatures between 20 C and 90 C. Pickling is followed by a rinsing station in which the chemicals and the dissolved scale coating are washed off by desalinated water. The acid contaminated by hard scale particles is usually disposed of via diaphragm valves of the GEMÜ 675 and GEMÜ 620 series. The valve bodies are made of SG iron GGG 40.3 lined with PFA. At temperatures up to max. 80 C, plastic diaphragm valves GEMÜ 690 and GEMÜ 677 with valve bodies made of polypropylene (PP) are used for caustic soda. Plastic valves and flowmeters I Product applications 7

The correct valve selection creates security Within the various areas of application, valves are subject to widely different requirements. Chemical and physical properties of the working media have a direct infl uence on material selection of the components. Moreover, both mechanical and process-specifi c requirements have an immediate effect on the valve. To do justice to the given operating conditions on an individual basis, GEMÜ offers its customers a wide range of valve types, as well as many material, connection and actuation options. Basically, the manufacturer's information and the interaction between the operating pressure / temperature must be taken into account. This brochure describes GEMÜ valves with plastic valve bodies. If you determine from the following information that a different valve type is necessary for your specifi c operational requirements, please ask us. Diaphragm Evaluation criterion Globe valve Butterfly valve Ball valve Gate valve valve Corrosion resistance Abrasion resistance Number of cycle duties Controllability of liquids Controllability of gases and steam Pressure range Temperature range Use in a vacuum Leak-free closure against gases, liquids and solids Valve pressure loss 100% open / * Low fl ow turbulence, / * / ** valve 100% open Low fl ow turbulence, / ** valve partially open Application-related variety of materials Compact design Weight/size ratio * applicable for full bore diaphragm valves ** applicable for angle seat globe valves : means well-suited /perfectly fulfi lled : means poorly suited / not fulfi lled The above information is a rough overview: process-linked shifts in the analysis may occur. It is assumed that the optimum valve design and material is selected for each application. 8 Plastic valves and flowmeters I The correct valve selection creates security

You thereby guarantee maximum storage and service life of the diaphragms. The temperature values are indicated irrespective of operating pressure and diaphragm size and apply to water and/or inert gases. The permissible operating pressure decreases with rising temperature and nominal size. Only specially designated diaphragms should be used for steam. The permissible operating pressure results from the steam pressure diagram. Diaphragm fixing A GEMÜ advantage is the uniform EPDM and PTFE diaphragm fi xing. This enables valves to be fi tted with other diaphragms later without exchanging the entire actuator. A typical feature of fi xing the diaphragm by means of a threaded pin, e.g. in comparison to a bayonet fi tting, is that the force transfer is distributed onto the large area of the fl anks of the screw thread. This prevents damage to the mechanical connection between compressor and diaphragm especially under vacuum operating conditions. * not applicable for valves from the SilverLine range. 18 Plastic valves and flowmeters I Selection of diaphragms

Good resistance to solvents, chlorine, and aromatic hydrocarbons. Convex two-piece diaphragm with loose PTFE face for higher switching cycles, can be used for permanent steam application. Special compounding and production by GEMÜ. Special seal contour for external sealing on the bottom of the diaphragm. Low gas permeability. See diaphragm 5E. FPM back with higher chemical resistance than EPDM back. We supply valves and diaphragms, which are free from substances that prevent paint adhesion (e.g. silicone) for applications in the surface fi nishing/painting industry. The shutoff diaphragms and valves are treated accordingly and packed individually in plastic bags. Furthermore, silicone-free lubricants are used during assembly. Packed diaphragms, without paint adhesion interfering substances. Plastic valves and flowmeters I Selection of diaphragms 19

Diaphragms Soft elastomer diaphragms The following statement applies in principle to soft elastomer materials: the higher the temperature load capacity, the lower the service life is in relationship to the mechanical stress. The temperature load, the chemical resistance and the deformability must be implemented optimally for valve shut-off diaphragms. For this reason, there are different designs for different applications. Diaphragm size 10-100 PTFE diaphragms: Our diaphragms, made of a modifi ed second-generation PTFE, provide maximum chemical resistance. Under steam conditions, PTFE diaphragms age much more slowly than elastomer diaphragms. The relatively rough structure of PTFE materials requires appropriately larger bonding thicknesses, stiffening the diaphragm, than compared to pure elastomer products. This concerns in particular the laminated diaphragms ( 52/5A), since the fi rmly connected materials PTFE and elastomer are mechanically connected by means of the different modules of elasticity. The service life of the diaphragm with regard to the switching frequency is reduced due to the higher rigidity. GEMÜ PTFE/EPDM two-piece diaphragm, 5E The solution is the GEMÜ 5E fl exible PTFE diaphragm. This product unites all the advantages of PTFE with the fl exibility of elastomer diaphragms. In order to optimise the entire system again, both the PTFE face as well as the diaphragm back are compounded for GEMÜ and produced by GEMÜ in house. Technical Data and Features: -20 C to +90 C continuous operation with liquid media max. 150 C in continuous operation with steam Available in diaphragm size 25 100 Special compounding and production by GEMÜ Special sealing contour for external sealing on the bottom of the diaphragm Diaphragm PTFE/EPDM fully laminated, 5A/52 The two-piece diaphragm design (5E) is not available in the small diaphragm sizes 8 and 10. Due to the low valve stroke of these sizes there is a clearly reduced mechanical stress in comparison to larger nominal sizes so that the sandwich effect is extremely low. This series is used in order to supplement the diaphragm 5E in these two sizes. The diaphragm 52 in the nominal sizes DN 150-300 (diaphragm size 150-300) is used in the chemical industry, mining, and in many other sectors. The diaphragms are only partially laminated in the middle, in order to reduce the mechanical stress. 5E Diaphragm size 25-80 52 Diaphragm size 10-150 20 Plastic valves and flowmeters I Diaphragms

SilverLine Plastic valves GEMÜ SilverLine is a valve range of small diaphragm and globe valves. All valves have a compact design with reduced components. Typical features of these valves are their low weight, corrosion restistant materials and high fl ow rates. The medium wetted PVC-U valve bodies and EPDM diaphragms comply with the French drinking water standard ACS. Manual, pneumatic and motorized actuators are available. The valves offer an excellent price-performance ratio and are maintenancefree. The replacement of spare parts is not possible. VALVES, MEASUREMENT AND CONTROL SYSTEMS Overview of GEMÜ positioners GEMÜ pneumatic actuators can usually be paired with our electro-pneumatic positioners and process controllers. In addition to the process parameters and the control system for which a positioner must be suitable, other technical functions and properties also play an important part in the selection of the right positioner. To make your choice easier, we have placed the four GEMÜ positioners in a comparison based on important features. Overview of GEMÜ electrical position indicators and combi switchboxes Electrical position indicators and combi switchboxes are integrated components of an intelligent process automation system Intelligent process automation follows a comprehensive approach nowadays and comprises the upper control levels as well as also innovative components and valves in the fi eld level. GEMÜ has been offering valves and precisely tuned valve instrumentation, controllers, sensor systems, valve actuators, and system solutions for process automation for some years now. You take care of your process, we take care of the component interfaces. Moreover, direct monitoring of valves is very reliable. Linear valves and quarter turn valves are frequently used in connection with electrical position indicators. GEMÜ provides the most varied designs to suit any automation concept. The product range not only comprises simple switches but also intelligent designs equipped with a timesaving automated initialisation setup. NAMUR, 2-wire and explosion proof versions are likewise available. Furthermore, the combi switchboxes may be used in fi eld bus networks AS-interface and DeviceNet. I/O link interfaces have also been integrated in the fi rst few devices. Electrical position indicators and combi switchboxes for pneumatically operated linear valves Our new devices detect the valve stroke in any installation position without play and are tension free. The sensor base of the 1234, 1235, and 4222 series is positively connected to the valve spindle by means of preloaded spring so that possible tangential forces of the valve actuator do not negatively affect the position indicator. The position indicators can be quickly and easily assembled and are safe and uncomplicated to handle. They can be adapted to pneumatic actuators of GEMÜ globe and diaphragm valves. Due to its special design, the quarter turn actuator of the GEMÜ 410 butterfl y valve may likewise be combined with this type of position indicator. Variable area flowmeters Function The GEMÜ 800, GEMÜ 850 and GEMÜ 840 fl owmeters operate according to the variable area principle. They are fi tted in a vertical pipeline and the working medium fl ows through it from bottom to top. The fl oat moves freely in a conical metering tube and is lifted up by the fl owing medium and caused to rotate. When the back-pressure in the metering tube is exactly the same as the force of gravity acting on the fl oat it no longer changes in height and the fl ow can be read off directly on the scale. By mounting limit switches and instrument sensors and series of Reed contacts, monitoring and signal processing is possible using the plant control system. Advantages: The fl owmeters require no auxiliary power They can be used for liquids and gases Low pressure loss Reliable function, high operational safety Simple operation, easy to read Impact resistant and corrosion resistant Cost effective procedure Good calculability acc. to VDI directives Operates also at low operating pressure Visual monitoring of working medium Individual scales enable direct reading of measured values on site, over 500 standard and 13,000 special scales available Double scales in different units can be implemented Scales are permanently engraved, no adhesive labels Additional equipment with electrical instrument sensors and limit switches also enables electrical signal processing No or very short inlet and outlet distances Industrial sectors and applications for variable area flowmeters: Water treatment and supply for many industrial sectors, dependent on percentage purity of desired fi nal product (drinking water, softened water, fully desalinated water, Aqua Purifi cata, Water for Injection, etc.) Mechanical engineering industries, for visual control of cooling and heating media, e.g. for machines in the plastics processing industry Surface treatment (cleaning and washing installations for individual parts, control of water and cleaning additives, electroplating, painting etc. ) Compressed air or air supply in many industries Microelectronics and semiconductor industries Chemical industry and environmental systems Energy production Paper and textile industries Metal production and processing Nearly all sectors of the processing industry 122 Plastic valves and flowmeters I Variable area flowmeters

Variable area flowmeters Correct function and accurate reading: Under certain circumstances, large errors in the display can be produced, even with small temperature variations, because very large changes in the viscosity can occur with small temperature changes. For this reason, it is important that the details required for the design of the fl owmeter and the scale are accurate. For measurements at viscosities in excess of 500 mpa*s, variable area fl owmeters are too inaccurate with fl uctuating temperatures. A different type of measurement principle should be used. Installation note: True vertical pipes are required to provide reliable operation and precise measurement. Inlet and outlet distances are not required if the fl ow profi le of the medium to be measured is suitable. If the fl ow profi le is unsuitable, caused by shut off/ control valves mounted in front of the unit, we would recommend an inlet distance of approx. 250 mm. The use of valves with single-sided constriction in front of the unit is to be avoided. If that is not possible, then a straight inlet distance of 5x DN should be provided. Throttling valves should be mounted after the measuring unit. Manual shut off valves should be mounted in front of and after the fl owmeter to permit safe mounting and removal. Overview of Plastics Raw materials for plastics comprise homogeneous basic elements, so-called monomers, these being joined to one another in a chemical reaction. At the same time, the C-C double bond is broken with the polymer being formed through linking of the individual molecules. These chemical reactions are termed polymerisation (subdivided into homopolymers, unipolymers, copolymers and block polymers), polycondensation and polyaddition. The degree of polymerisation is important for thermoplastics and, as a result, the tensile strength, hardness, elongation at fracture and impact strength increase as the degree of polymerisation rises with simultaneous increase in the tendency towards crystallisation, swelling behaviour as well as stress crack formation. Advantages Low weight due to low density Suitability for mass production Complex shapes can be produced economically in only a few work steps Variable colouration, good dye penetration ability Simple improvement of the mechanical properties (tensile strength, elongation at fracture etc.) by fi lling and strengthening materials Plastics have a good internal elasticity and deformation behaviour Favourable antifrictional properties High chemical resistance Properties High impact resistance and notch impact strength also at very low temperatures Smooth surfaces for low pipe friction losses High rigidity Physiologically harmless No microbial growth on the surface Corrosion resistant Processing: Injection moulding, extrusion, hot forming, cementing, welding, bolting together (with thread-forming screws), machining Scratch-proof surface, very high surface gloss for Prof polymer Galvanising suitability Metal inserts can be embedded effectively owing to the high viscosity Resistance to chemicals Resistant against: [Deviations result depending on the portion of the three components styrene, acrylonitrile and butadiene] Water, aqueous saline solutions, most dilute acids and alkalis, aliphatic hydrocarbons, mineral oils, animal and vegetable fats Not resistant against: Concentrated mineral acids, organic acids, aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, solvents (esters, ethers and ketones) Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene polymer ABS Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene polymer is an amorphous thermoplastic with many options for variation in its structure. The monomers styrene, butadiene and acrylonitrile form the polymer, which can be reinforced with glass fi bres or glass beads. Blends, polyblends, transparent plastics (ABS with corresponding rubber components), copolymers (graft or terpolymers) and special materials are available. ABS is distinguished by high viscosity, also at low temperatures down to -40 C. This is complemented by high hardness with good cratch resistance. ABS is used in precision and electrical engineering, vehicle construction and the furniture industry, applications including high-quality household appliances as well as pipes and fi ttings. Thermal properties ABS exhibits good thermal stability and can be used in applications from around -45 C to +60 C, sometimes to +80 C. ABS is a good thermal insulator; Owing to the high thermal coefficient of linear expansion, this is to be taken into account in the design of pipe systems Electrical properties ABS exhibits a high surface and volume resistivity at only very low electrostatic build-up and also has good electric insulating performance. This must be considered for applications where there is a risk of ignition or explosion. 142 Plastic valves and flowmeters I Overview of Plastics

Fire behaviour Burns with a sooting fl ame without dripping. In accordance with UL94, ABS is classifi ed into the fl ammability classifi cation HB (horizontal burning). Types with fl ame-retardant standardisation are available Disadvantages Not very weatherproof Polyamides PA Polyamides are construction plastics for many technical applications, in particular for machine elements. Apart from copolyamides and polyamide 6-3-T, all others are semicrystalline. Amorphous polyamides such as PA 6-3-T are almost transparent and are used at GEMÜ for fl owmeters amongst other applications. Polyamides absorb the moisture reversibly and release it again, their properties changing in the process. Areas of application include mechanical engineering, precision engineering, vehicle construction, electrical engineering, sanitation technology, as well as the construction and furniture industry Properties (at high crystallinity) rigid and hard Very viscous after absorbing water High fatigue strength Good impact resistance and notch impact strength, increased with modifi ed types Good abrasion and wear resistance Good hydrolysis resistance Good antifrictional and antiseizure properties Good tracking resistance and dielectric strength With injection moulding: Good fl ow velocity, tremendous demoulding capacity Processing: Injection moulding, extrusion, cementing (better with low crystallinity), welding, bolting together, machining, printing, painting, metallising in high vacuum, fl uidised bed sintering, fl ame spraying or electrostatic coating Resistance to chemicals Resistant against: Very many organic media, e.g. esters, ethers, ketones, many chlorinated hydrocarbons, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, numerous mineral oils, greases, petrol, saline solutions, some alcohols, halogenated aliphatics and aromatics, petrol, oils, greases, weak alkalis and (mineral) acids, diluted alkalis Not resistant against: Mineral acids, strong alkalis, solutions of oxidants, low aliphatic alcohols, acetone, ketones and aldehydes (only to a limited extent) Thermal properties The application temperature is between approx. -40 to +80 C, depending on the type. Heat-stabilised types are available, which can withstand a longer infl uence above 120 C without harmful effects Electrical properties The electrical properties depend on the water content. The favourable surface resistance prevents extensive static build-up. Good tracking resistance, good insulation capacity (also with the effects of moisture), low electrolytic corrosion and high dielectric strength distinguish this material Fire behaviour PA burns bluish with a yellow edge, drips with crackling Most types of PA achieve fi re class HB to V2 according to UL94, and up to V0 with fl ame retardant Disadvantages Water absorption affects material properties. For permanent use with outside weathering; UV-stabilised types should be used above all with exposure to sunlight Polypropylene PP-H / PP natural / PP reinforced Polypropylene has been manufactured on an industrial scale since 1957 through the polymerisation of propylene using Ziegler-Natta catalysts. It belongs to the group of olefi ns which also include polyethylene (PE). A distinction is made between the PP moulding compounds in homopolymers (PP-H), blockcopolymer (PP-B) and random-block-copolymers (PP-R). PP-H is used in pipe construction and equipment, as it exhibits many favourable properties such as resistance to chemicals and corrosion, stress crack resistance and, above all, an excellent weldability. PP is a semi-crystalline, extensively non-polar thermoplastic, exhibiting a higher rigidity, hardness and strength in comparison to PE. As a thermoplastic with the lowest density at around 0.9 g/cm³, it occurs with a crystallinity between 60 to 70%. The addition of nucleating agents results in a fi ne-grain structure, exhibiting an increased (cold) impact strength. Plastic valves and flowmeters I Overview of plastics 143

Overview of Plastics A reinforcement comprising glass fi bres or minerals is recommended for construction components subject to high stress. Properties Good chemical resistance Excellent weldability High thermal aging and heat distortion temperature Application temperature: 0 to +90 C, depending on the pressure and medium High impact strength, which decreases slightly at temperatures below 0 C Fire behaviour:burns; in UL94 as HB (horizontal burning) according to DIN 4102 T1 Low tendency to form stress cracks Processing by: Injection moulding, extrusion, extrusion blow moulding, hot forming, no effective bonding strength owing to high chemicals resistance and non-polar structure (after pre-treatment cementing with adhesive and contact bonding material), machining, printing, painting, metallising Requires stabilisation Resistance to chemicals Resistant against: Aqueous solutions of inorganic salts, weak inorganic acids and alkalis, alcohol, some oils, solutions of standard washing liquors to +100 C Not resistant against: Strong oxidants, halogenated hydrocarbons, ketones, chlorinated hydrocarbons, petrol and benzene. Swelling in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons (especially at increased temperatures). Partially non-resistant upon contact with copper! Inserts made from copper, manganese, cobalt and their alloys are to be avoided! Thermal properties PP is a good thermal insulator. Pure PP tends towards oxidation at high temperatures. Stabilised types are therefore used. Electrical properties Favourable dielectric properties irrespective of temperature and frequency (hence no HF warming). The high electrical insulating properties lead to electrostatic build-up and dust attraction. On account of this electrostatic build-up, care must be taken in applications where there is a risk of ignition or explosion, or corresponding countermeasures are to be implemented. UV resistance The short-wave UV spectra of sunlight damages PP together with the atmospheric oxygen. A covering in the form of an insulation or by a coat of paint absorbing UV light should be attached or applied. Polyvinylchloride, unplasticised PVC-U Polyvinylchloride is a bulk plastic which has been produced on an industrial scale since the beginning of the 20th century, its use coming in third place behind polyethylene and polypropylene. It is now indispensable in many applications in industry as well as for products in everyday life. PVC exhibits a very good overall ecological balance on account of its high component of chlorine of around 56 % by weight. Different manufacturing methods give rise to the various PVC polymers PVC-U, PVC-P, PVC-C, PVC-E, PVC-S or PVC-M with special properties. These are determined by the average degree of polymerisation (K value). An increase in the K value therefore increases the viscosity, dimensional stability in heat and fatigue strength at simultaneous decrease in the processability. PVC-U is primarily used in pipe construction, also PVC-C and transparent PVC-S in lower quantities. PVC-U is an amorphous, polar thermoplastic. The cementing of pipes and valve bodies made from PVC-U is generally carried out with highly-solvent, gap-fi lling solvent adhesives. Properties Very good chemical resistance Good resistance to light and weathering, if sufficiently stabilised Physiologically indifferent High mechanical strength, rigidity and hardness Application temperature: 0 to +60 C, depending on the pressure and medium Fire behaviour: Highly sooting with yellow fl ame, selfextinguishing fl ammability class V0 according to UL94, building material class B1 (hardly fl ammable) according to DIN 4102 Low stress crack formation Processing by: Injection moulding, extrusion, hot forming, cementing, welding, machinable Resistance to chemicals Resistant against: Saline solutions, sea water, diluted and partially concentrated acids, diluted and concentrated alkalis, non-polar solvents, petrol, mineral oils, greases, alcohol, aliphatic hydrocarbons, elemental chlorine, relatively good 144 Plastic valves and flowmeters I Overview of plastics

against high-energy radiation. UV radiation reduces the impact resistance slightly Not resistant against: Polar, aromatic and chlorinated solvents, esters, chlorinated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, petrol, liquid halogens, sulphuric acid containing oleum, concentrated nitric acid. An application with gas is not recommended, as PVC-U valve bodies tend towards chip fracture Resistance to chemicals Resistant against: Most organic and inorganic acids, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols and halogenated solvents, dry and moist halogens Not resistant against: Alkalis, alkali metals, highly alkaline amines, elemental fl uorine. Slight swelling due to highly polar solvents Thermal properties PVC-U is a good thermal insulator on account of the very low thermal conductivity. Despite the lower linear coefficient of thermal expansion, this must be taken into account in the design of pipes Thermal properties PVDF is a good thermal insulator; Owing to the high thermal coefficient of linear expansion, this is to be taken into account in the design of pipe systems Energy balance PVC-U is average in this respect. The energy balance is low during manufacturing, which has a positive effect in relation to the durability of the products Polyvinylidenefluoride PVDF Polyvinylidenefl ouride is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic, which can be processed using the injection moulding process in contrast to PTFE. The combination of extreme thermal stability with the best chemical resistance of all plastics allows PVDF to be used in industrial line construction, in the foodstuff industry for packaging fi lms and for coating measuring probes and loudspeakers thanks to its piezoelectric effects. PVDF has a fl uorine content of 59% and can be processed well into moulded parts in contrast to PTFE, which cannot be processed thermoplastically. Properties High strength and rigidity at high temperatures High fatigue strength High UV resistance High resistance to chemicals High impact strength even in the cold Very low water absorption Self-extinguishing Physiologically harmless No microbial growth No electrolytic corrosion Electrical properties PVDF is a good electrical insulator. The high electrical insulating properties can lead to electrostatic build-up and dust attraction. On account of this electrostatic build-up, care must be taken in applications where there is a risk of ignition or explosion, or corresponding countermeasures are to be implemented Fire behaviour Does not burn and is classifi ed into fl ammability class V0 according to UL94. A material decomposition begins at 380 C, elemental fl uorine being released, which reacts exothermally to form hydrogen fl uoride in the presence of water. Polysulphones PES and PSU Amorphous, polar thermoplastics exhibiting a high heat defl ection temperature and resistance to chemicals. The transparent, partially crystal-clear material PSU is used for fl owmeters at GEMÜ. Both materials are also used for mechanical, thermal and electrical construction parts which are subject to high stress and for which transparency is required. Polysulphones have a broad fi eld of application in precision and electrical engineering, vehicle and aircraft construction as well as household appliances. Properties Good strength and rigidity at higher temperatures Low creep tendency at higher temperatures Good viscosity also at higher temperatures Water absorption affects mechanical strength similar to polyamide PES has a higher permanent application temperature than PSU Plastic valves and flowmeters I Overview of plastics 145
