Function Remote engine start is used to start the engine without turning the starter key to the start position, for example by using a switch outside the cab. Function There is also a function called Inhibit remote engine start which is used to inhibit engine start by remote activation. However, the function does not inhibit engine start by the starter lock. WARNING! For safety reasons, it must be possible to shut down the engine in close vicinity to the location where the engine is started. Information on remote engine shutdown is found in the document Remote engine shutdown. Scania CV AB 2016, Sweden 1 (12)
Behaviour Behaviour When remote engine start is activated, the system gives a visual acknowledgement of the start attempt by using the direction indicator lamps. The vehicle has the following acknowledgement signals from the factory: When the activation conditions are fulfilled and the engine starts: The direction indicator lamps flash When the activation conditions are not fulfilled and the engine fails to stary: The direction indicator lamps come on with a steady light The acknowledgement function can be turned off by using SDP3 for bodybuilders (Scania Diagnos and Programmer 3). Activation Activation The functions Remote engine start and Inhibit remote engine start are controlled by the BCI control unit. The functions can either be activated by using internal vehicle signals, analogue signals or external CAN network (Controller Area Network). Signal type Type of activation Internal vehicle signal Analogue signal External CAN network Activation method Signal from a factory-fitted function. Signal from a retrofitted function. Connected by the bodybuilder via connector C259 in the bodywork console. CAN message Information on CAN messages is found in the document External CAN Communication Specification. Activation using internal vehicle signals and analogue signals Different functions in the vehicle are factors that affect the activation. Activation Internal signals in the vehicle come from a function fitted at the factory. Examples of factors that can affect the activation by using internal signals are applied parking brake or activated power take-off. Use analogue signals when a factor does not generate an internal signal as above. Examples of factors that can affect the activation by using analogue signals are an activated switch in the instrument panel or a deactivated sensor in the bodywork. Define when and how the activation is to take place by using BICT (Bodywork Interface Configuration Tool) and SDP3 for bodybuilders: 1. Create a logic diagram in BICT that defines which factors shall affect the activation. 2. Define parameters in SDP3 for bodybuilders which state the conditions for how and when the different factors shall affect the activation. The logic diagram is transferred, together with the parameters, to the vehicle s BCI control unit using SDP3 for bodybuilders. More information on BICT is found in the document BCI, Bodywork Communication Interface. Scania CV AB 2016, Sweden 5 (12)
Activation by using external CAN network Activation When a vehicle is equipped with BCI functionality, a connection to the external CAN network via connector C493 for bodywork is included. The external CAN network is activated by using SDP3 for bodybuilders. A CAN message defines when and how the function is to be activated. Activation conditions Components and cable harnesses for the activation conditions are included in the factory-fitted options required for connection of the function. Information on the options is found under the heading Chassis conditions. The following activation conditions must be fulfilled to allow Remote engine start to be activated: The Inhibit remote engine start function deactivated Starter key in drive position Engine shut down No engine shutdown functions activated Parking brake activated Drive mode selector and gearbox in neutral position The Inhibit remote engine start function has no activation conditions. The Remote engine start switch must be spring-loaded. When starting the engine, the starter button must be held depressed for a certain time after the engine has started. If the starter button is released too quickly, the start attempt will be interrupted and the engine stops. The default factory setting is that the starter button must be held depressed for 1 second after the engine has started. The time can be changed by using SDP3 for bodybuilders. Scania CV AB 2016, Sweden 6 (12)
If the starter button is held depressed for longer than 10 seconds after the engine has started, the engine shuts down. Activation When a start attempt is interrupted, either the stop symbol in the instrument cluster s main display or one of the indicator lamps in the instrument cluster comes on depending on the vehicle s configuration. Activation conditions with or without EXT switch With EXT switch The EXT switch must be activated after the starter key has been turned to the drive position. Only then can the function be activated. Without EXT switch Activation of the function is not dependent on the EXT switch. Scania CV AB 2016, Sweden 7 (12)

Connection Connection The following example of connections applies to both the Remote engine start and Inhibit remote engine start functions. Example of an analogue connection using BICT This description shows a connection inside the cab with activation to +24 V or ground. Information on how to make the connection with extension cable harness on the chassis frame is found in the document Cable harnesses for bodywork functions. Proceed as follows: 1. Connect the activation cable to any position in connector C259. 2. Assign function to the selected position using BICT. 3. Transfer the logic diagram from BICT to the vehicle s BCI control unit using SDP3 for bodybuilders. The function is ready for activation. Scania CV AB 2016, Sweden 9 (12)
