#26 Cana Comer, 1959 Austin Healey ; #07 Jon Bauer, 1959 Austin Healey Mk I; #192 Randy Byboth, 1964 Austin Healey ; #78 Jim Donato, 1962 Austin Healey. story by Steve Gorwitz VSCDA s members and their entourages gathered once again for the club s traditional June event, the Blackhawk Vintage Classic, taking place at Blackhawk Farms in Northern #36 Michael Recine, 1969 Alfa Romeo GTV; #05 Jeff Cohen, 1973 BMW 2002. Illinois, a track which offers a laid-back country atmosphere as well as a fun road race circuit. It s always a great time at the Blackhawk Vintage Classic, an event which is continuing to thrive. A total of 22 drivers, running cars across a wide variety of marques and classes, competed in Saturday s JEFF PORASIK- WELLS FARGO FINANCIAL ADVISORS ENDURO. The lively lime green 1984 Tiga SC84 of John Boxhorn was out in front throughout the race, accruing a total of 26 laps during the event to claim the checkered flag. Thomas Bernd, 1964 Elva-BMW Mk 7S, amassed 25 laps to finish second, as he ran in the second spot for the first half of the race, slipped back into the back and then surged 26 August 2016 Victory Lane towards the finish. Also completing 25 laps was 3rd-place finisher Mike Pranka, 1972 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000, and the 1967 Lotus 51C driven by Daniel Hayes, who had started in the 17th position and had worked his way up to the fourth spot by the time the race was complete. Always a mainstay at VSCDA events, the ever-popular SPRIDGETS were out in force at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, partaking in a 12-lap race ultimately claimed by Ron Soave, 1968 Austin Healey, who had assumed the lead for good on Lap 5 and widened the distance from there between himself and the eventual runnerup, Cara Comer s 1959 Austin Healey. Running in the third spot throughout was Jon Bauer s 1959 Austin Healey Mk 1, who was able to get to the finish line a little more than a second ahead of 4th-place finisher Randy Byboth, 1964 Austin Healey. Also up and at em early on Sunday morning were the TRANS-AM/B SEDANS, taking 15 laps around the 1.95 mile circuit and paced by the maroon 1972 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000 driven by Mike Pranka, who ran flag-to-flag to capture a comfortable victory. Running second throughout this contest was Steve Bonk, 1971 Datsun 510, who distanced himself from a couple of other Alfa GTVs on the lead lap the 1969 Alfa GTV driven by Michael Recine, and a 1967 GTV driven by Barbara Nevoral, who finished third and fourth, respectively. Jeff Cohen was the best of the Beemers, driving his 1973 BMW 2002 to a 6th-place finish, while Todd Jongen was the swiftest among the Swedes, coming in eighth place in his 1967 Volvo 142-S and barely beating a pair of other Volvos to the finish line. The Formula Vees are also a popular group at VSCDA, with a total of 28 cars hearing the call to the grid for RACE A at 10:05 a.m. on Sunday morning. The 1969 Lynx B driven by Eric Coppock cruised to a sizable and impressive victory, but the battle for the second and third spot on the podium was less clear-cut, with three Vees in the mix: William Wolff s 1968 Zink C-5, Bill Griffith s 1969 Warrior, and the 1968 Lynx #86 David Crosby, 1970 Kellison Mk 1; #03 David Clardy, 1969 Scorpion.
#39 Fletcher Belt, 1979 March 79 SV; #77 Michael Kitzmiller, 1974 Dulon. B of Guy Dennehy, who had started the race closer to mid-pack and made a late move. It was Wolff who beat the others to the line to claim second place, just ahead of Griffith with Dennehy a fraction of a second behind in the fourth spot. The dueling 1969 Lynxes #85 Scott Atkinson, 1963 Mini Cooper; #34 John Salisbury, 1962 Mk II. of Frank Newton and Roger Bailey had an even closer competition for fifth place, with Newton winning out by a mere.046 seconds. The 1964 MGB Roadster of Scott Fohrman set the pace in the RACE B feature, running a steady and consistent race from the front and holding off a couple of challengers as they neared the checkered flag. Finishing in second place in this group was the 1963 MGB Roadster of Donald Dickey, with Cana Comer hot on his heels in third, driving her 1959. Richare Leuning, meanwhile, put on a good show in his 1963 MGB, starting in 21st position in the 25- car field and then working his way up through the pack to land in fourth place overall by the time the race s 15 laps were complete. Running flag-to-flag in RACE C was Brian Kennedy, 1966 Shelby GT. Daniel Parr had been running in second place in his 1969 Camaro Z28 for most of the race, with the 1970 Datsun 240Z of Jeffrey Jagusch running in third, but then the race took quite a turn late, www.victorylane.com as both cars were forced to retire late in the race, paving the way for Colin Comer, 1966 Shelby GT350, to claim the 2nd-place overall spot. Norbert Bries, 1970 Lotus Europa, finished in third, while Brian Garcia, 1970 Lotus Europa, out dueled the 1972 Datsun 240Z of Joseph Ziltener to finish in fourth. RACE D was on the agenda for after lunch on Sunday, with 19 assorted open wheel and sports racers taking to the grid. Running out front throughout the race was John Boxhorn, 1984 Tiga SC84, winning by nearly 18 seconds over a 1978 Crossle 35F driven by Tom Stephani. The chase for the third spot on the podium came down to#317 Timothy Murphy, 1961 Triumph TR4 a tussle between James Buchanan, 1969 Merlyn Mk11A, and Jesse Jurgenson, 1979 Dulon MP21, with the two drivers swapping positions four times over the course of the 15- lap race before Buchanan moved back ahead of Jurgenson on the penultimate lap and went on to claim the third spot. RACE E was a terrific show as well, featuring Pre-War cars along with some classic MGs from the 1940s and early 1950s. These cars can still pack a punch, mind you race winner Garrett Van Camp s 1954 Davis Special Roadster was clocking some pretty impressive lap times but simply seeing some of these classic machines on track is art in motion, triumphs of longevity and imagination. Rex Barrett s 1933 Ford Indy Racer wound up finishing second in this event, with Matt Holloway s 1952 MG TF coming in third, but with such a wide variety of cars and capabilities in one field, the results of the actual race don t matter quite so much. It s simply a treat to see. #56 Patrick McManus, 1969 MGC GT. Sunday afternoon also featured another round of sprint races along with another VSCDA tradition, the Father s Day Scramble race. Plenty of track time for everyone, and plenty of good times all around. #317 Timothy Murphy, 1961 Triumph TR4; #142 Todd Jongen, 1967 Volvo 142-S. Victory Lane August 2016 27
