Data Dictionary CHARGING UNIT HIERARCHY. Location. A driver-identifiable destination where charging stations are located. As a general rule if stations are within visible range of each other, they are organized together into a single location. 2. Station. A physical charging unit installed on the ground or wall. In EV industry terms, stations are frequently referred to as EVSEs (Electric Vehicle Service Equipments). Stations can be network-managed. 3. Connector. A physical vehicle-to-station connection point. Each vehicle is compatible with different connector types. There can be multiple connectors on a single station of varying types and charging levels. Connectors are sometimes referred to as ports, outlets, or sockets. GEOGRAPHY. DMA. Shorthand for Designated Market Area. A DMA is a group of counties centered around a metropolitan area that constitutes a business market. There are more than 200 DMAs in the United States. 2. CBSA. Shorthand for Core Based Statistical Area. A CBSA is a geographic area defined by the US government that covers a group of people that are socioeconomically tied to an urban center by commuting. There are over 900 CBSAs in the US. LOCATION ACCESS TYPE. Public. A location where anyone in the general population with a compatible vehicle can charge. Public locations may include paid stations or have stations available at certain times during the day. Examples include shopping centers with shopper-only charging and hotels with guest-only charging. 2. Restricted. A location where only a limited segment of the population is approved for EV charging. Restricted access charging stations are often situated behind gates, valets, or parking arms. Examples include workplaces with employee-only charging and dealerships with charging for existing customers only. MISCELLANEOUS. Network. A company that operates stations and provides subscription services or access control services for those stations. 2. PlugScore. PlugScore is a rating system developed by PlugShare that rates the quality of the charging experience at a given location on a scale of to 0. The PlugScore algorithm is based on the quantity, frequency, and recency of positive and negative check-ins by PlugShare users at a location. Users who visit locations with low PlugScores tend to have poor charging experiences for reasons including, but not limited to, station malfunction, frequent ICE'ing, poor signage, or charging congestion.
