During th car's lif, a transmission woulduail th for on rason or anothr. pormany ownrs that had transmission problms during th warranty p~:riod, Chryslr dalrships would mak rpairs or install, in... 1rm cass, a rplacmnt unit. Whn th car was out of warranty, (\ local transmission shop would b slctd. Many of Ilhs shops would hav a "rbuilt" unit on th shlf Bcaus all th transmissions lookd th sam physically on th outsid, many tims th rplacmnt unit cam orilginally from a Dodg, Plymouth, DSoto, Imprial or non-300 Chryslr and Dodg truck. 1 hav found that through th y:ars, approximatly 10% wr original 300 transinissions, and th fat that whn an original 300transmissioll was rbuilt, th propr job was not don according to what th factory spcifid.. That is, many \vr rbuilt to (II "normal" transmission. In othr words, closr tolrancs, pf()pr~lmounts of friction and stl discs, band adjustmnts, rar clutch (low gar) spring, govrnor and lin prssurs wr not rbuih or rplacd according to Chryslr l1\cl:ory spcifications. Ths srvic bulltins \vr not availabl to transmission shops. Th "'rbl1ilt"/"rplacmn " transmissions did noilalways hold up and gnrally did go bad just ovlr th war~anty priod. This mad many 300 ownrs unhappy with thir "Chryslr" transmissiion. I prsonally had this silllcltion on my 1957 300C. Within on month in 1963, a slmlp had to go through it thr tims. Th third tim it wnt bad, within 5 mils, I told thm. to contact my local Chryslr dalr. Thy got th corrct information and th transmission has workd as it should. During th tim] was rstoring my 1961 3000 coup and my 1960.300F, I was concrnd if my tmnsmissions Not: 10 arly 1959, th shift cabl was th sam as '56-'58 TorquHit and had thr pic valv bodis. In mid 1959, th shift cabl usd th "adjustmnt" whl lik '60 and up and had a 2 pic valv bqdy. would work lik thy should from th factory. I had rmmbrd a frind that was th chif instructor for AMMCO Transmission, shops across th U.S. H rtird from AAMCO atlr 35 yars with thm. H livd in a narby town and I calld him up. All 1955 through 1960 transmissions and bll housings ar paintd aiuminulll. In 1961, th transmissions wr lft natural cast iron along with th mrgncy brak drum. Th pans wr ln natural stl color and th bll housing and tail shaft wr lll natural aluminum. In 1959 through 196 J, th bll housing had an "ovr spray" of black ngin paint about 8-10" on th LOp and taprd down th sids about 3/4 th way down. Rason lor this is that th ngin was paintd black with th lranslbll housing attachd to th ngin prior 10 having th assmbly installd into th car. Rbuilding ths transmissions, many of thm COJ1ll10 fn!; in various l:olor.s. Th rason for this was that many transmission rbuilding shops had a I}(H1icular "company" color to idntify thir rbuilt units along with som "invoic" numbr st,lmpd ~omwhr on th transmission, Blu. grn, icllow, black, rd and gold wr som of th :olors. Vry fw wr paintd aluminum and many wr nvr P'lIilltcd. Latr 1962-65 transmissions wr fo natul'hl aluminum with som "grn" ngin paint 011 th lop orth bll housing. 1966 and up tr~lj1smissjons showd no paint at all. So thr you hav!;' it. Nothing is wriltn ill ston as thr ar always som variations cam up with through th yars. Chryslr On intrsting not ill 1964, Torqullilc Iransmissions t hat usd Ih consol ~hin.t h valv body shih pattrn was th rvrs of th dash mountd push-button gar slctor. Consol shiflr in th first gar position would b in th < park." So it is vcry important that th propr transmission b usd f(jf rh 1964 300 consol shin assmblis. Th Ilrst yar of "park" slctor was usd in 1963 and up. Prior yar transmissions usd an mrgncy brak drum moulltd on th{~ nd of th tail shan housing and was activatd by a "latching" lbot pdal. 1963 and up usd a cabl assmbly that oprmd off th dash consol or shin lvr (I (65) and actuatd a "ratcht" locking assmbly insid th tail shan housing. 1963 was th first yar of a foot lvr mrgncy brak that applid th rar axl brak shos. In ssnc, 1963, 1964 and 1965 had two forms of locking th car in a stationary position, rar braks applid and transmission lockd intrnally. As a flirt hr not about 1956 through 1964 transmissions. most fluid laks occur fram th shin cabl. Th.outr rubbr or plastic housing dvlops cracks or rupturs that allm\! th transmission lluid to travl up th cabl and lak at th failur.
