Date: Jan. 2007 No. B-2029 Model Serial Number Range Description 926501 000101 000916 ST1336DLE 926502 000101 000416 PB936 (Ariens) 926503 000101 000194 PB936 (Gravely) 926504 000101 001938 ST8526LE 926505 000101 000760 ST8526L Ariens has learned that the hairpin used to prevent the pinion shaft from rotating on the Sno-Thro models in the serial number ranges listed above may break or work loose, which will allow the pinion shaft to rotate in the Sno-Thro frame. There is a possibility that a rotating pinion shaft may damage the frame, which could eventually lead to premature frame wear and drive system failure. Ariens has created Pinion Shaft Anti-Rotation Kit (p/n 52603400) to reduce the possibility of breaking or losing a hairpin, and we have created Pinion Shaft Frame Repair Kit (p/n 52603500) to reduce the effects of damage to the unit frame sustained by a rotating pinion shaft. Dealers should follow the guidelines below for inspecting units and then for selecting and installing the proper kit. Do not install both kits on the same machine. For Unsold Machines Still in Inventory Inspect the anti-rotation hairpin on the pinion shaft on the left side of the frame. If only a hairpin and screw are holding the pinion shaft in place, order and install Pinion Shaft Anti-Rotation Kit (p/n 56203400). The anti-rotation tab supplied in this kit provides better support of and protection for the hairpin. If the pinion shaft is held in place with this arrangement and there is no frame damage around the pinion shaft on the right of the unit frame, order and install Pinion Shaft Anti-Rotation Kit (p/n 52603400). Pinion Shaft If the pinion shaft is already held in place with an anti-rotation tab and a hairpin or a roll pin, there is no need to order or install an anti-rotation kit. Hairpin Screw Pinion Shaft Hairpin Anti-Rotation Tab Roll Pin Pinion Shaft Anti-Rotation Tab Page 2 of 3

Date: Jan. 2007 No. B-2029 For Machines Already in the Field When one of the above-listed machines comes in for any service, inspect the anti-rotation hairpin on the pinion shaft on the left side of the frame and the area around the pinion shaft on the right side of the frame. If only a hairpin and screw are holding the pinion shaft in place, order and install Pinion Shaft Anti-Rotation Kit (p/n 56203400). If a hairpin and screw are holding the pinion shaft in place AND the hole around the pinion shaft on the right side frame is worn out of round, order and install Pinion Shaft Frame Repair Kit (p/n 52603500). Note: Only install the Pinion Shaft Frame Repair Kit on units whose pinion shaft holes are worn out of round. DO NOT order both kits for the same unit; the Pinion Shaft Frame Repair Kit (p/n 52603500) contains an anti-rotation tab and mounting hardware. Inspect the area around the pinion shaft on the right side of the frame. If the area to the rear of the shaft is out of round or damaged, install Pinion Shaft Frame Repair Kit (p/n 52603500). This frame shows no damage so only the Anti-Rotation Kit would be needed. Pinion shaft has worn the hole out of round. This unit requires the installation of the Pinion Shaft Frame Repair Kit. Pinion Shaft Frame Repair Kit (p/n 52603500) installed. Dealers will be reimbursed at their standard shop labor rate for 0.25 hours of labor for installing the Pinion Shaft Anti-Rotation Kit (p/n 52603400). Dealers will be reimbursed at their standard shop labor rate for 0.50 hours of labor for installing Pinion Shaft Frame Repair Kit (p/n 52603500). Review the attached instruction sheets 00867700 and 01922200 for the kit installation procedures. Page 3 of 3

Remove Existing Pinion Shaft See Figure 2. 1. Stop engine, remove key, wait for all moving parts to stop and hot parts to cool. 2. Place unit in service position. 3. Remove both wheels. 4. Remove bottom cover. 5. Remove pinion shaft hairpins. Discard the hairpin removed from outside the frame. Keep the hairpins from inside the frame for installing the new pinion shaft. 6. Remove and discard the tapping screw near the pinon shaft on the left side of the frame. Axle Lock Model shown. Hairpin location on other models is similar. Remove and save hairpins (they may be hidden by grease). Spacer Washers Pinion Shaft Pinion Sprocket Remove and discard tapping screw. Keep the washers from each side of the pinion sprocket. Discard the pinion sprocket. See Figure 4. 11. Save the lock arm, lock arm return spring, clutch gear return spring, and the washers from each side of the lock arm for installing the new pinion shaft. Lock Arm Return Spring Washers Clutch Gear Return Spring 3. Position the drill template (item 2) so the pinion shaft is as close to the axle as possible. Push the template into position and then clamp it in place. Remove the 1/4-20 bolt and nut after clamping the template in position. NOTE: Proper pinion shaft position will maximize the life of the axle gear or differential, the pinion sprocket and the pinion shaft. 7, 4 2 9 Push down on the template to position the template as close as possible to the axle. Lock Arm Drill 1/8" pilot holes. Remove template and then drill 5/16" holes. Washers Pinion Sprocket Figure 4 Install New Pinion Shaft NOTE: Do not install pinion shaft components until after you have drilled mounting holes for the pinion shaft support. 1. Insert the new pinion shaft (item 9) through the frame by sliding the shaft through the left side. 2. Install the drill template (item 2) over the pinion shaft (item 9) and hold it in place with the 1/4-20 hex bolt (item 7) and 1/4-20 top-locking flange nut (item 7). NOTE: The 1/4-20 hex bolt (item 7) helps align the template. DO NOT tighten it against the frame. Figure 5 4. Cover the drive system with a cloth to protect it from metal shavings, and then use the two holes in the drill template as a guide to drill two 1/8" pilot holes through the frame. 5. Remove and discard the drill template, and then drill the two pilot holes to their final 5/16" diameters. 6. Clean all metal shavings from the drive system. 7. Slide the pinion shaft to the left, and then reinstall the components removed in step 7 (for Solid Axle or Differential Models) or step 10 (for Axle Lock Models). See Figure 3 or Figure 4. 8. Loop the drive chain over the pinion sprocket (item 10). See Figure 6. 01922200 1/07 Page 3 of 4

9. Install the pinion sprocket (item 10) and the washers removed in step 7 (for Solid Axle or Differential Models) or step 10 (for Axle Lock Models) on the pinion shaft. Make sure there is one washer on each side of the pinion sprocket. See Figure 6. 9 3 Drive Chain Pinion Sprocket Washer 5, 6 Figure 7 12. Install the anti-rotation tab (item 1) on the left side of the frame with a 1/4-20 x 3/4 hex bolt (item 4) and 1/4-20 top-locking flange nut (item 7). Install the bolt from the outside so the nut is on the inside of the frame. Tighten the nut to 60 110 lbf-in (6.8 12.4 Nm). See Figure 8. 13. Install the hairpin (item 8) through the pinion shaft as shown. 8 1 Washer Figure 6 10. Install the hairpins removed in step 5 of Remove Existing Pinion Shaft on page 2 on the pinion shaft. See Figure 2. 11. Install the pinion shaft support bracket (item 3) on the pinion shaft and secure it to the frame with two 5/16-18 x 3/4 hex bolts (item 5) and 5/16-18 top-locking flange nuts (item 6). Install the bolts from the outside of the frame and install the nut on the inside. Tighten the nuts to 150 225 lbf-in (16.9 25.4 Nm). See Figure 7. 9 Figure 8 7, 4 14.
