WAVE passive The new generation of harmonic filters

WAVE passive The new generation of harmonic filters Electrical components are continually becoming smaller, more efficient and cheaper. To achieve this, most applications include components such as thyristors or frequency converters. The components are also known as non-linear loads because their characteristic curve is not a straight line, which leads to many undesirable problems. In particular, these include harmonics. Harmonics are an example of the type of problem that are often simply not recognised correctly, but can cause significant malfunctioning particularly with the increasing use of non-linear loads. Harmonics cause, for example, interference phenomena such as: Creating additional losses resulting in unnecessary consumption of energy Reduced lifetime of transformers due to destruction of the insulation Resonances in the supply networks Measurement errors Errors in tripping fuses Serious faults in IT systems. The solution for these problems is the WAVE passive! This device is used at the place where the problems arise where the biggest effect can be achieved. WAVE passive is based on proven components of the CNW family such as mains filters and harmonic filters which, thanks to their excellent characteristics and the special circuit design of WAVE passive, efficiently keep the harmonics away from the mains network. Mains Netz Nichtlineare Non-linear load Mains Last Netz Nichtlineare Non-linear load Last WAVE Diagram 1: Uncontrolled rectifier Diagram 2: Diode rectifier with WAVE passive Diagram 3: Current (blue) und voltage (red) for a B6 rectifier configuration with scaled values Diagram 4: Current (blue) und voltage (red) for a B6 rectifier with WAVE passive; scaled values

The WAVE passive filters harmonics, and ensures: Fulfill with WAVEpassive the following standards: Reduction of the THDI value Increasing network stability Reduction of current consumption Reduction of equipment costs Simple integration into existing systems The WAVE passive is used in the following markets : Drives technology * Image shows a WAVEpassive in a switch cabinet with IP 54 Renewable energies Railway technologies

WAVE passive harmonic filter with a potential for savings WAVE passive doesn t only give protection against harmonics significant reduction of costs is also possible. The way that WAVE passive works results in reductions in current and current harmonics, enabling significantly smaller fuses, cabling and transformers to be used. WAVE passive therefore enables not only energy cost savings but also savings in equipment costs. The filter must merely be suitably rated for the required power. WAVE passive approved quality WAVEpassive is a filter unit which consists out of approved CNW components. This filter unit includes a mains filter and a harmonics filter. The mains filters function is the pre-supression of the mains as well as the shielding against external harmonics. It filters the harmonics caused by the B6 circuit (thyristor, diode bridge etc.), effects a preliminary suppression of network interference, screens the application from extraneous harmonics and enables a cost-saving in equipment selection and energy consumption. WAVE passive Save money with less reactive power In the course of rising energy costs and growing CO2 emissions minimizing losses in the transmission grid gains more and more importance. An important factor are the reactive currents. These currents do not contribute to the effective power, but stress all components in the current path and cause additional losses to the ohmic resistance component of the lead. Reactive currents are, for example, harmonics caused by the usage of frequency. However, reducing the energy efficiency is not only a burden on the environment because more energy is consumed for a steady performance - at the same time the costs increase for the operator of the installations, as they have to pay the reactive power. Mains chokes, DC chokes or Harmonicfilter of filter unwanted harmonics and help to counteract the resulting reactive current. Thus, the reactive power is diminished, the energy requirement and the running costs are reduced.
