A Sunflower tool for every soil type and cropping program. With approximately,600 acres of row crops spread across the southern tip of Illinois, Mark and Dana Eddleman face a wide range of soil and cropping conditions. We farm everything from nearly rocky soil to pure black gumbo with silty loam and clay in between, says Dana. And each soil type seems to require a little bit different action and approach. Added to the mix is weather that ranges from too dry one year to too wet the next. In 0 alone, the brothers received more than 50 inches of rain, with much of it falling during planting time. As a result, the Eddlemans may use any combination of their Sunflower tillage tools, backed by a Sunflower 9 grain drill. They ll go largely no-till, for example, on their hilly ground and when double-cropping soybeans behind wheat using either the 9 or their White planter to seed the crop. If they re planting soybeans behind corn on bottom ground, they will often disc the field in the spring and follow the disc harrow with the 505 field cultivator. Likewise, if the brothers suspect compaction could become a problem, they will often use the chisel plow in the fall to break up any hardpan that has developed. However, one of the newest and most versatile tools in their tillage arsenal is their 660 vertical tillage machine. We ve actually used the VT tool behind our disc in place of the field cultivator, particularly when we ve had a lot of weed growth from heavy rains that have kept us out of the fields, Mark explains. It will go right through that heavy residue. Plus, we can go a lot faster with it, too. The other thing we ve started doing with the 660 is going over corn stalks in the fall to size the residue and open up the soil for increased moisture absorption, Dana adds. It s just given us a lot more versatility than we ve ever had before. In the meantime, the Eddlemans say they re equally sold on the strength and ruggedness of Sunflower equipment.
