Soybean Foliar Fungicide Trials: Although not an official part of the protocol for variety rating or for the 40-variety spray test for foliar diseases, a foliar fungicide trial was conducted near those tests. An FLS-susceptible variety (Delta King 5465) was sprayed at the R 3 growth stage (early pod set) on August 7 before FLS had reached 10 percent infection level. A backpack CO 2 sprayer was used to apply each fungicide in 15 gallons of water per acre. Plots were 50 feet long and four rows wide on 36 inch centers and replicated four times. The second application was made on August 20. Results: (at MES) Quadris, Topsin-M, and Headline (not yet approved for soybeans) were tested at the MES at two rates and compared to two applications at the lower rate. The test was irrigated to ensure infection by FLS. (See chart 1 on p. 28) FLS reached a severe level of 9.0 on the untreated plots and was the major disease that reduced yields by as much as 18.8 bu/a. All treatments reduced FLS, Anthracnose and defoliation and increased seed weights. There was very little difference in disease control or yields between one application and two applications of any of the three fungicides tested. While Headline and Quadris had numerically higher yields and lower disease ratings, Topsin-M treatments were lowest in yields and highest in FLS ratings. Although not the major disease at MES, Anthracnose was reduced by the two applications of both Headline and Quadris when compared to only one application. Topsin-M had significantly higher Anthracnose ratings than the other two fungicides when applied twice. In general, Headline had lower disease ratings on FLS and Anthracnose, less defoliation and a higher seed weight than the other two fungicides or the untreated check. Results for foliar fungicide test at Weakley County: The major foliar disease present at this location was Septoria Brown Spot. Due to a corn rotation, the more destructive diseases such as Frogeye Leaf Spot and Anthracnose were reduced. Although there was a significant trend of disease reduction with Quadris and Headline, when ratings were compared, yields were improved by only 4.8 bu/a with the highest-yielding treatment. The major difference between the Milan Experiment Test (Table 10) and the Weakley County Test (Table 11) is that the test at Milan had severe Frogeye Leaf Spot. This disease can cause major reductions in yield on susceptible varieties under moist weather conditions.
