s flow sensors 711/A and 711/911E flow sensors 711/A and 711/911E Introduction Application Mode of operation, operation Mode of operation All electromagnetic flow measurements are based on Faraday s Law of Induction: U m = B v d Sensor Fig. 1 flow sensor Fig. 2 Measuring principle Application Electromagnetic flowmeters are suitable for measuring the flow of almost all electrically conducting liquids, as well as sludges, pastes and slurries. A prerequisite is that the medium must have a certain minimum conductivity. The temperature, pressure, viscosity and density have no influence on the result. Even corrosive media can be measured providing suitable materials are selected for the tube liner and the electrodes. Solids present in the medium do not usually influence the result. The main applications of the flow sensors can be found in the following fields: Water, waste water Power generation and distribution Chemical and pharmaceutical industries Food industry The flow sensors are combined with the transmitters Intermag/Transmag produce a complete unit. Intermag/Transmag are available as compact and remote versions. U m = measured voltage produced perpendicular the magnetic field and the flow direction. The voltage is tapped at two point electrodes B = magnetic flux density which permeates the flowing medium perpendicular the flow direction v = flow velocity of medium d = internal diameter of metering tube An electric voltage is induced in a conducr moving through a magnetic field. The magnetic field is generated by coils in the sensor, and is propagated in the pipeline. The flowing medium (as the moving conducr) generates a voltage in the magnetic field. This voltage is proportional the velocity, and can be tapped at the sensor electrodes. A differentiation is made between constant field and alternating field excitation for the type of magnetic field. flow sensors 711/A and 711/911E Introduction Installation guidelines Installation guidelines The measuring principle is independent of the flow profile providing stationary eddies do not extend in the zone where the measured value is generated (e.g. following elbows, with a tangential restriction or with a half-opened gate valve upstream of the sensor). In such cases, measures are required stabilize the flow profile: Increase the upstream and downstream distances Use a flow straightener Fig. 5 Installation with pipeline which is always full The flow sensor should be installed such that the metering tube cannot run empty and is always full with the medium. If the pipeline is not full or if there is a open outlet, the sensor must always be installed in a siphon (Fig. 5). Fig. 3 Installation in horizontal and vertical pipelines Installation is possible horizontally or vertically (Fig. 3), but it should be ensured that the electrode axes are horizontal in order avoid faulty measurements as a result of deposits or bubbles on the electrodes. Protection washers are attached as standard all sensors lined with PTFE protect the liner. They can also be used as earthing rings. Protection rings protect the inlet and outlet edges of the sensor from mechanical damage, especially with abrasive media, and simultaneously serve as earthing rings. With electrically conducting pipelines it is guaranteed that the medium, the pipeline and the transmitter are connected in the sense of equipotential bonding. With internally insulated pipelines, the medium in the pipeline must be connected a reference potential by additional measures. This is possible using earthing rings or protection washers. The nomograms (Figs. 11 and 12) shown which flow range can be measured by a sensor with a particular nominal diameter, and which nominal diameters are suitable for a particular flow.
