A B O U T S A E The Society of Automotive Engineers was founded in 1905. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is an international engineering society established to further develop mobility on land, in air, and in space." It is an international organization with more than 84,000 members engineers, business executives, educators, and students from more than 97 countries. SAE sets the standards in fields such as ground vehicles, aerospace, refrigerants, and fuel cells, to name only a few of the areas currently in SAE s purview. SAE also offers resources and expertise in designing, building, maintaining, and operating self-propelled vehicles for use on land or sea, in air or space. SAE s commitment to society is manifest in the public awareness programs, run locally, nationally, and internationally, to promote vehicle safety and energy resource conservation.
SAE also sponsors many educational international competition programs, including three Aero Design events, a Clean Snowmobile Challenge, the Formula Series competitions, the Baja Series competitions, a Super mileage competition, and a Robot Systems Challenge annually. The SAE Foundation serves as SAE s link to educational facilities by distributing awards to outstanding students and faculty. There are over 380 collegiate chapters of SAE at engineering schools around the world, and students make up more than 20% of SAE s membership. Membership in a professional society affords students the opportunity to attend professional conferences, network, and gain valuable experience and training. It also makes available to the student various professional publications and research databases, all of which enrich the student s education and enhance his or her future career. More information about SAE is available at www.sae.org.
A B O U T B A J A The Baja is an international competition that challenges college students to design, fabricate, and race an off-road vehicle. Rule guidelines place restrictions on the engine and frame, testing the imagination, knowledge, and creativity of the students. The vehicles are judged through both dynamic and static events. Students design the Baja car as if it is a prototype for a company, so cost, appearance, reliability, and performance all become key factors in judging. This competition, like all SAE competitions bring students together from not only across the country, but from around the world. The objective of the Baja Competition is to apply our knowledge gained in class and put it into practice. Baja is comprised of three regional competitions that expose students to real life engineering design processes: East, West, and Midwest.
The competition remains essentially the same throughout the 3 events offered in the United States, with Static and Dynamic Events taking up the first two days of the competition, and an Endurance Race making up the third day. Static Events involve students describing in detail the methods used to design the car, and covers all car systems from Chassis to Safety. Points are awarded based on the judges comments, which contribute to the overall score for the competition. On the same day, safety / technical inspections occur, in which teams are either approved to run on the course, or given extra time to bring their car to the necessary safety level. Dynamic Events occur during the next day, and involves dynamic tests such as acceleration, suspension / traction, hill climbing, land maneuverability, also, water maneuverability. Points are awarded based on the performance of teams cars, and also determine the starting order for the Endurance Race. The Endurance Race, which lasts typically 4 hours or 100 miles, is the highlight of the competition. A track of 2-3 miles with a wide variety of natural and man-made obstacles is specially created for the size and speed of a typical Baja car. Most cars break down during this race, and only a handful finish without any hitches. Essentially, the Endurance Race is the ultimate test of a Baja car, and only the best and strongest finish.
P A S T C O N Q U E S T S 2006 Team Kshatriya took part at SAEINDIA Mini Baja and secured 21 st place out of a total of 80 teams from all across India. 2007 Team Kshatriya International took part at Pretoria- South Africa 17 th place. 2009 Team Kshatriya International stood 14 th place at SAE Mini Baja at Pretoria, South Africa.
B A J A A T I L L I N O I S, U S A The Team started working on KI-11 from August 2010. The Competition Date 8-11 June 2011. Competition Venue Caterpillar Headquarters (Construction Division) at Peoria, Illinois, USA. Result 83 rd out of 115 teams (67 th in the Endurance Race beating 48 renowned teams from all over the world). Day 1: Sales Presentation, Design Presentation and Technical Inspection We were successful in Sales and Design Presentation Rounds but unfortunately we could not Pass the Technical Inspection in our first attempt. Day 2: Technical Inspection and Dynamic Events Ultimately, we passed Technical Inspection Round just in time to qualify for the Endurance Race. Consequently, Dynamic events were at bay. Day 3: 4 hour Endurance Race The Checkered Flag flung and 95 ATV s were on their way to glory. Despite two minor hiccups, we successfully managed to complete 12 laps of the mighty offroad track, and set a benchmark for other Indian teams.
TEAM HIGHLIGHTS First Indian Team to pass the Technical Inspection Round with flying colors. First Indian Team to complete the 4-hour grueling Endurance Race. India s best BAJA International Team SAE BAJA Technical Inspectors.

T H E C O M P E T I T I O N Y E A R ( 2 0 1 1-2 0 1 2 ) DESIGN: (JULY- NOVEMBER) The design phase took place during the winter semester; with new members learning the ropes and fresh ideas taking root. SOLIDWORKS is the CAD program used in building the car, and all components are modeled and assembled on a computer before fabrication begins. Other analysis such as finite-element analysis (FEA) and mechanical linkages are also examined in using ANSYS software, to ensure that the design is suitably strong and mechanically feasible. Also, specialized software such as ADAMS is used to stimulate and optimize the suspension system of the vehicle. FABRICATION: (NOVEMBER-FEBRUARY) This phase involves manufacturing of the car, with an emphasis on the Chassis and Suspension areas. As a result, valuable hands on experience in metalworking, machining, and troubleshooting is gained, and techniques from the previous years are improved upon. Near the end of Intersession, other areas such as Brakes, Steering and Drive train are assembled, with the goal of having a drivable car by November. TESTING: (FEBRUARY-MARCH) Testing is also an important phase of the build period, and occurs from the time the car is drivable up to the date of the competition itself. During the testing phase, the goal is to deliberately see what systems are prone to breakage or malfunction so that repairs and redesigns can occur long before the competition date.
P R O J E C T B E N E F I T S The Baja competition is an excellent learning experience that requires the students to push their creative and engineering ability to the limit. The project provides students with significant challenges that require complete commitment and determination to overcome. The objective of the project is to present engineering students with the opportunity to apply their classroom skills to real world engineering problems and tasks. Students who participate in the program gain experience in mechanical design, fabrication, testing, communication, and project and labor-time management. The team member s carry the engineering technical and managerial experience gained from this project into the professional world. When the racing season is said and done, students come away with a profound sense of accomplishment, no matter how they fared at the competition. Besides the experience of designing and building a Baja car in less than a year, students gain a tremendous amount of teamwork and leadership skills. Since the role of the faculty advisor is strictly limited to administrative duties, students learn from sheer experience, which is typically better than learning out of a text or from a lecture. Baja SAE is one of the most fulfilling engineering experiences available to undergraduates and graduates alike.
