May 2011 Mid Continent Corvair Association Newsletter Page 3 Barn Find Corvair in El Dorado, KS Creigh McLaughlin acquired this 1963 Monza sedan in deal that if he got the equipment he wanted, he had to take the Corvair also. The car shows 70,xxx miles, has a decent interior and repaint with some evident bondo work. The engine turns over freely but has not been started yet. Indications are that the Corvair has set idle since 1986 (the time of the last oil change). Creigh is looking for offers on the car and is working on getting it running. Call 316-323-0982. Unusual Corvair It is not the Corvair that is unusual in this photo, it is the mechanic. Working on this 1960 Corvair is Bill Grumpy Jenkins Famous for his work on drag racing Super Stock Chevrolets in the 60 s. At first he built full sized cars, but gained further fame with his Grumpy s Toy Novas and Camaros. If you find a photo send it in. Remember to submit your candidates for Unusual Corvair to Terry Kalp, tkalp@cox.net

Page 4 Mid Continent Corvair Association Newsletter May 2011 2011 HOT By Terry Kalp Thursday April 14th, I slid into the gold 65 500 Sport Sedan and headed South. My first stop was the Oklahoma City Corvair club meeting that evening. After an overnight stay in OKC. Loren Capron, Chris Teer, Pat Silver and I headed out for the Heart of Texas Corvair Reunion in Lakeway, TX (Just NW of Austin). Fighting 50 mph crosswinds and the Dallas-Ft. Worth traffic made the trip challenging. Avoiding detours and breakdowns, we arrived in Lakeway during late afternoon. Suddenly the wind was calm and the temperature 70 degrees. Once everyone was checked in and some short BS sessions in the hotel parking lot, the Corvairs were loaded up and herded to Sonic for a show and socialize. Shortly after the Sonic show shut-down, we found a car wash and knocked the road dust off for the judged show Saturday morning. The main event on Friday night was the Cruise across the highway from the host hotel to the Sonic for a informal car show and an injection of fast-comfort food. The main show was at a shopping center had two divisions, Show and Scratch & Dent, with LM open, closed etc. within each division. Chris Teer and I judged trunks and engine compartments. The final Saturday event was the Awards Banquet. An Italian buffet was served in a covered out- The engine compartment of this Late Model coupe was stuffed full of aftermarket air conditioning and an Early Model gas fired heater. door dining area. As the awards were announced. Pat Silver won first in EM Closed with his freshly restored 64 Monza, Loren Capron took first, this time EM Open with his blue 64 Convertible. The Gold Sedan won 2nd in LM closed and the Long Distance Award. John Jackson is a Texas based, free-lance photographer that drives this Corvair van thousands of miles each month as he covers car shows.

These are some of the Corvairs on the long tour. TOP RIGHT: Showing off their hardware were Loren Capron (OKC), Terry Kalp (Wichita) and Pat Silver (Stillwater). Mid Continent Corvair Association Newsletter Page 6 May 2011 The weekly Friday night car shows at Central and West are on again. MCCA members decided to try to get as many Corvairs as possible out for the first Friday of each month. Put Friday, June 3rd on your calendar now. Upcoming Events May 14 Rock Cafe, Stroud, OK The Green County Corvairs of Tulsa and Indian Nation Corvair Association of Oklahoma City have planned a lunch get-together at the historic Rock Cafe in Stroud, Oklahoma on Saturday, May 14th. MCCA members that want to make the trip will head out from the DRC about 7:30 am on the 14th. They will then meet up with the OKC group at Pop s on Rt 66 about 10:30-11 and head on over to Stroud. So far I think the Madsen s, Streckers and Terry Kalp plan to attend. It is a great trip and we will be back in time for the meeting. Fast Eddie... This story is an account of the trip from Indianapolis to West Virginia so that Michael LeVeque could earn his SCCA Road Racing license. by Tracy McLean and Michael LeVeque I hope those of you who have ever traveled any distance with your favorite other person will appreciate and laugh along with our racing adventure to Virginia. We stayed with David and Katie Clemens and headed to Summit Point for the first road race for YSR160 in the spring of 2011. Saturday, May 1, 2011 we pulled out of our drive at 7am as planned. It s raining of course. We had just spent 10 hours in the rain last weekend at an autocross in Terre Haute. At least it s in the mid 70 s and not the lower 40s. Two hours into the trip we arrived just inside Dayton Ohio when we missed our exit. I told Michael I was going to title this story The Whoas of a Co-pilot. He replied, Ok, you start the story and let me finish it! 3 hours into the trip we ran into SUNSHINE! We really enjoyed the beautiful green rolling hills of eastern Ohio. Michael was looking for old cars on cement blocks and I was looking for garage sales. I m missing our travel partners, Warren and Sharon. Kinda nice to have another girl to giggle with and pick on the boys. Michael mentioned this is the first road race without his dad. We re thinking about calling them to join us at Summit Point! Hours 5 & 6: Round and round we go around the mountains of West Virginia. No internet or phone service back to paper and pen. Monotony seems to be the perfect word as we sit in silence. Im trying hard not to fall asleep so Michael will stay awake. As we chug along beside a semi traveling uphill, Michael spouts out (in a monotone voice) Two turtles drag racing Monotony over! We both crack up and are awake and chatting again. Hour 7: Wish someone would define co-pilot & navigator to Michael! Ha! Another toll-wowwonder where all the money goes definitely NOT towards these roads! I m feeling sea sick from all the bouncing! I ve seen 3 REAL phone booths today! Going to take a picture of the next one the kids will Beginning April 8, and every Friday: 5:30 10 pm Cruse In at Central & West St. Ron :316-295-7600 May 22 : Sunday Arc Car Show, Old Cowtown Museum Registration 9 am, Show Noon to 4 pm Carl : 316-755-2198 June 12 : 39th Annual Lake Afton All Wheels Car Show 11 am 4 pm Doug : 316-729-6645 June 25 : Juna Tuna, Kalp Shop 316-755-9821 July 9 : 17th Annual Automobilia s Moonlight Car Show and Street Party, 6 pm Midnight Old Town, Wichita Gary : 316-264-9986 Aug 26-28 : 2nd Annual Black Top Nationals Downtown, Century II area For Information : 316-425-6767 Sept. 10 :MCCA Road trip to Beaumont, KS Sept. 30-Oct 2 :Great Plains Corvair Roundup Excelsior Springs, Mo For Information :816-847-8677 Continued on Page 7

May 2011 Fast Eddie Mid Continent Corvair Association Newsletter Page 7 The First Road Race Continued from Page 6 never believe it! Is it against the law to strangle the pilot?! Just askin. 3 tolls = no restrooms at rest areas, not even an outhouse welcome to WV! Hour 8: In Virginia! Woohoo!! Gotta call Katie! Oh, yeah, no phone service. Hour 9 ½: Arrived at David & Katie s house. David and Michael went one way, Katie and I the other. Let the Testosterone Olympics begin. After eating dinner outside at Hooters, we drove to the top of Roanoke to the Star which is 88 ½ feet tall and has 2000 feet of neon lights in red/white/blue. We really enjoyed looking over the city and all the lights. We also learned this is where David proposed to Katie. 7am Sun. morning we all head out to a local autocross with David s group Blue Ridge Mountain. I got to go out first in the YSR160. It was a very open course and I loved it! Then the boys lined up. David out first- excellent runs for both. David earned FTD beating Michael by 0.3 secs & won his XP class. Michael won his CP class. I got beat by an all wheel drive in the women s class. Back to the Clemens. We celebrated Michael s birthday with a cheesecake sampler. The boys and I then headed out to Winchester for the night so we wouldn t have a 3 hour drive in the morning. 730am Monday morning: RACE DAY! And raining. We worm our way through the man made goat path to Summit Point. We park near Dave Edsinger. Tech, meet & greet, drivers meeting. I was volunteered as one of the score girls as well as Roberta O Neill, Judy, Betty and Bruce Carlton s wife, Pat. Practice, lunch, repair, prepare, racin. Since the YSR160 is a new car, Michael spent most the day getting set up for the track. I did get to take a few run laps with David s friend Kevin in his convertible Mustang. Way fun even at 80 mph! The sky was DRY & SUNNY! All the drivers did an excellent job! Al Laki was the first out he even held FTD for the first 3 or so drivers in his Toyota Yaris! Brian O Neill and I tallied up the Tweety Awards per Warren s request. I got to be trophy girl and had a blast doing so! All the Michael LeVeque and Tracy McLean stand by YSR 160. The car is a recreation of the Yenko Stinger raced by Michael s dad, Warren in the 70s. Tweety s were very much appreciated by all the winners! Good byes til next time were said and back on the road we go for the 3 + hour trip back to David s. Tuesday trip home: We sleepily make our way out to the Suburban only to find a flat tire! Luckily Michael fixed it quickly and on the road we go. We are planning a pit stop at Rick and Janet Norris. Of course as soon as we got there, Janet had fresh iced tea and brownies waiting on us! The boys then went one way Rick s lil piece of Heaven and Janet and I went to her lil piece of Heaven, her BEAUTIFUL screened in porch. Michael and Rick relived a scene from a CSI show trying to diagnose what happened to Rick s busted up crankshaft and engine. After about a two hour visit, we headed west. Well, kinda sorta. The co-pilot didn t quite get the directions right. I thought we were on 34 when in fact we were on 64! Ooops! So I got out my trusty IPhone and mapquested using our current location viola! A New More Exciting route home! We had a blast on our trip and that is why we chose to share it with you. I would like to continue sharing our jaunts from time to time. There is so much more to racing than being on the track. Good friends, good food and great stories to come home and share!

May 2011 Mid Continent Corvair Association Newsletter Page 8 Valve cover track goes on tour The valve cover race track built by MCCA members for the first Great Plains Corvair Roundup will soon be on the move again. It was last used at the 2010 Roundup in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Terry Kalp is headed to Tulsa on Saturday, May 28 to pick up the track and attend the Tech Day (morning) at J. C. Ash s garage in Sand Springs. It will return to Wichita for a few days, then will be headed for Colorado Springs the first weekend in June. The track will be stored in Colorado Springs until it is used for the CORSA International Convention in Denver July 26-30 2011. After the CORSA convention Terry Kalp will bring the track back to Wichita and store it until it can get transferred to the Greater Kansas City area so it will be ready for use in the 2011 Great Plains Roundup September 30 thru October 1. For 2012 the track will go to Oklahoma City for their Roundup. Bonus Racing Photo May Meeting Saturday May 14th 7 pm Derby Recreation Center 801 E.
