Contents Project Background Design constraints Tunnels, Shafts and Station Design Railway Systems Current Status & Progress Questions
Background
Vauxhall, Nine Elms, Battersea VNEB An Opportunity area in SW London 195 hectares 3 km of Thames river frontage 18,000 new homes 5 hectares of public open space 24,000 new jobs 1 billion of infrastructure Local Transport improvements New schools / healthcare / community space
Battersea Power Station Opened 1933 Dormant from 1980s Poor transport links Many development proposals
TfL Transport Studies Transport studies in 2009 / 10 considered a number of options: Bus routes and segregation Light Rail London Underground extensions. Victoria Line (Vauxhall), Bakerloo Line (Elephant & Castle), District Line (Sloane Square), Northern Line (Kennington) Conclusion Level of development is such that a high level of public transport capacity is required best delivered through an extension of the tube. Extension of Northern Line Charing Cross branch reduces pressure on Vauxhall station and provide relief to the Victoria line and the existing Northern line south of Kennington
Key Programme Requirements Capability of up to 30 trains per hour Efficient, safe and reliable service Minimise environmental impacts Minimal impact on the existing railway Fully integrated with the urban design Fully integrated with other transport operators

Alignment
Tunnel Alignment Constrained by TWAO Limits of Deviation Minimise journey time Minimise ground borne noise and vibration Safety Quality of ride London Underground standards Curves - min radius 300m Concession from 400m. Gradients - max 2.00%, min 0.250%, level stations Cant - max 125mm, Speed - Vmax. 90km/h.
P&C and Junctions Kennington Step Plate Junctions Northbound Cv9.25 NLE 245m rad / NL (Loop) straight Southbound Cv9.25 equal split NLE 490m rad / NL (Loop) 490m rad
P&C and Junctions Battersea scissors crossover, - 4 Standard Straight Cv9.25, with large radius curves between turnouts, scissors crossover is slightly tapered, being wider at platform end. Crossover is level throughout.
Tunnel Design
Overview of Tunnelling Main TBM drives approx. 5.2km total TBM could not junction with the loop Shafts located 70m and 200m from junctions - SCL Difficult to mechanise excavation around existing tunnel - SGI
Tunnel Section Bolted RC Segmental Lining 5.2 Diameter I/D
EPBM Tunnelling 2 x TBMs (Amy & Helen) Reduces risks with ground conditions Reduced settlement - Predicted 0.5% vol. loss
Muck Removal
Muck Removal
Step Plate Junctions Interfaces with operational railway Interdependencies with various systems and disciplines Installation of new CMS Re-routing and relocation of services providing continuity. Removal of existing cast iron tunnel segments and support structure over weekend possessions Installation of new track and power assets Commissioning of new railway during a 10 day blockade
Step Plate Junctions
Step Plate Junctions
Tunnel and Station Cross Passages Three cross passages between the bored running tunnels were constructed to facilitate operational evacuation as agreed with LFB. Constructed in the London Clay and Lambeth Group using timber headings and SGI Segments Four new cross passages in Kennington Station between the existing platforms to facilitate congestion relief and station evacuation. Constructed in the London Clay and using timber headings and SGI Segments
Kennington Ventilation Shaft Designs
Kennington Shaft Structures Secant Piled Wall Construction SCL Shaft for tunnel interface Complex integration with multidiscipline services Kennington Green Kennington Park Two Permanent ventilations shafts at Kennington Green and Kennington Park to allow air in and out of the underground tunnels to help cool the Tube. It is also required to enable emergency intervention and evacuation from the tunnels.

Current Status
Status Overview All tunnelling work complete as of mid September 2018 Track installation has commenced. Works between the Step plate junction and shafts, plain line between Battersea Launch tunnels and Nine Elms box and platform areas to Battersea Power Station are all complete Excavation works to both Kennington Shafts are ongoing with construction of secondary structures. Nine Elms and Battersea Power stations secondary structures works are ongoing Design works for Signals and Systems ongoing with Thales (PFI Contract) Fit Out works have commenced - NLE due for completion 2020
