TBD Editor Brian Chan 650-867-8813 pcceditor@gmail.com WHAT S HAPPENING @ PCC MEETING MINUTES So is it rainy or sunny? You probably wonder why the wind generator is missing! We lost the wind generator, it self destructed! So we are solely rely on the solar panels to charge the batteries. The way the sun has been hiding behind the rain, the batteries will not be fully charged. When possible, charge your batteries at home. More details on the failure from Steve in this newsletter. 1 Call to Order: (Pres) Time: 7:45 p.m. Guest(s) and Applicant(s) Introduction(s): 0 Approval of last month s Minutes Approved: Yes Announcements: Lew Chee has resigned as secretary. PCC would like to thank him for his excellent contribution to the club. Until a new Secretary is confirmed we will be entertaining all who come forward. Bruce Crawford has been made the second signator on the PCC accounts. Lew Chee has been removed as a signator. Treasurer s Report: Dave S presented his report. New Business: We are looking for a new meeting room for meetings. We are able to meet at Peter's Cafe until Feb 2019. John Bassetto presented the opportunity to use the VA facility in Redwood City. Pending approval from the VA, the officers of the PCC will visit the site.

The other option is to return to the Chetcuti Room at the Millbrae Library. The same place we met for year prior to Peter's Cafe. Mike Solaegui will reserve it if needed. Some talk was given to rescheduling of the annual party to Spring. No date set. Raffle prizes for the party have been purchased and put in storage. $1000.00 worth (wholesale). Field Maintenance Report: Wind generator is out. The controller died, we are looking for better one. Steve Williams. Dave Mosher is going to look into renting an excavator to clean the ditch south of our driveway. Combination change for the field and sheds is due. We will coordinate this change in the spring. Some conversation was made on the subject of purchasing a small tractor with a more robust mower for the field. Anyone with connections or suggestions for a tractor is encouraged to contact the officers. Flight Instructors Report: Isidro Dimery received his Solo Flight Certificate. Good Work, Isidro! Congratulation! PCC MEETING PLACE At the moment, we are still having our meetings at Peter's Cafe, till February. We are actively looking for a new meeting. IF you have any suggestion, please contact one of the club officers. CLUB OFFICER POSITION OPEN Lew Chee had resigned as the Secretary of PCC in December. So we are actively looking for a replacement. If you are interested, please contact David Mosher or Dave Santana (their contact information are on the front page). PCC would like to thank Lew for his service as secretary for the last two year. UPCOMING EVENTS President Dave presents the Solo Certificate to Isidro. WIND GENERATOR FAILURE Steve Williams The wind generator worked fairly decently for a couple of months until the wind got up to gusting 30+ mph. It is hooked up to the battery bank in parallel so that either or both can charge at the same time. However they independently determine whether charge is needed. When it s sunny the solar charges up to 14.4+ volts holds that voltage until the bank is full and backs off to 13.4+ volts and holds that until someone charges a big battery or sun goes down. If the wind charger senses the battery is charged it puts on a brake (a resistor across the alternator wires) to slow down the turbine to avoid excessive speed without a load and generally preserve bearing life. Bottom line: need heavy duty 1000 watt power resistor to dissipate turbine energy at these wind speeds. Cheap controller didn t do the job. Ongoing discussions as to what to do next. It does appear that there is a lot of energy at times to bridge the sunless gaps of winter. But diverting the power to a large resistive load is necessary. After several days of winds with 35 mph gusts (the jagged charging cycles) on January 9 th at 1:18 AM the voltage dropped dramatically due to a short in the charge controller. At that point the controller apparently could no longer apply the automatic brake so the wind turbine had no load on it and it overspun and destroyed itself. Dave and Dave hauled it down and took photos showing the internal damage: 3

NEW CLUB TRAINER Dave Mosher PCC has a new training aircraft thanks to a donation from a resident from in Half Moon Bay (Scott Nolan). Dave Santana worked on setting up the plane, he also did the maiden flight last Sunday and it seemed to fly well. Scott also donated a new in the Box 2nd trainer with additional super tiger.46 engines, fuel, starter in addition to other items. Ken readies the Trainer for maiden flight. FLOAT FLY RETURNS TO OAKDALE According to the Radio Control Flyer's Unlimited Inc. web site, there is a float fly on the following dates: May 11th, June 22nd, July 13th, August 3rd, August 24th. Check their web site for more information. http://www.rcflyersunlimited.com Directions to Flying Site: Take Hwy 120 north of Oakdale to 26 Mile Road. Turn north on 26 Mile Road. Turn right on Eastman Road (Just north of Woodward Reservoir), approximately 2 miles to the field. Wee, here we go! TIPS FOR WORKING WITH CA GLUE from rcgroups.com CA glue is moisture activated. That's why it sticks to your skin and sets fast. Your skin contains high moisture. If you are using medium, thick or slow set CA and want to set faster, breath on it. The moisture in your breath will speed setting. (Not responsible for your bad breath melting your plane) You can glue wet wood with CA and still have a few seconds before it sets when gluing curved laminations. Clean up of CA is tough. Acetone is the cure. Use it to keep your glue tips clean and clean your hands of CA. Use caution! Returning to the runway safely under Dave's guidance. 4

PCC VIDEOS RANDOM SIGHTINGS AT PCC If you have seen this guy, you will know what I am leading to. That is John, PCC resident videographer.
