REPLACING HEADLIGHT BULBS Before you begin Non-working headlights do not always indicate dead bulbs. Check the headlight fuses before changing bulbs. See: Interior fuses Booklet 4.62 Both low and high beams are installed in each headlight enclosure. These following replacement bulbs are required: Low beams 55 Watt H1 bulb High beams 60 Watt H1 bulb NOTE: A flat head screwdriver is required for removing the headlight assembly. Opening the engine compartment Engine compartment lever 1. Turn off the engine and remove keys before replacing headlight bulbs. 2. Pull lever located inside in front of the driver s door to open engine compartment. 3. A small tab should emerge from the front bottom edge of the hood. Pull this tab forward to release the hood. 4. Lift hood to expose engine compartment. NOTE: Gas springs will automatically support the hood. Hood release tab Respect all warnings from: Engine compartment Booklet 4.15 Replacing headlight bulbs 4.73

FUEL, FLUIDS AND MAINTENANCE 4.0 Disconnecting the battery Disconnect battery to prevent damage to electrical system and prevent electric shock. See: Disconnecting the battery Booklet 4.30 Respect all warnings from: Disconnecting the battery Booklet 4.30 Releasing the headlight assembly 1. Locate the headlight enclosure on the inside of either front fender. Headlight enclosure release lever and tab NOTE: The enclosures are identical but face right or left. 2. Locate a lever on the side of the enclosure and a small indentation in front of it. 3. In the indentation lies a small tab. Press it firmly with the screwdriver to free the lever. 4. Pull upwards on the lever as far as it will go. 5. From outside the front fender, gently work your fingers under the edges of the headlight assembly. Headlight assembly exits through fender 6. Pull forward to remove the assembly. NOTE: It is not necessary to disconnect the cable from the headlight assembly, but it is a good idea to support it rather than have it dangle from the cable. 4.74 Replacing headlight bulbs

FUEL, FLUIDS AND MAINTENANCE 4.0 Removing and replacing bulbs 1. Find the black panel on the rear of the assembly. 2. Loosen the 3 clips around its edges. This will expose the terminals for both the low beam and high beam bulbs. 3. Disconnect the terminals from the bulbs that require replacement. Each bulb is secured by a wire clip that can be pinched to release the bulb. NOTE: Do not allow bulbs to make direct contact with skin. Skin oils can significantly reduce bulb lifespan. Handle with a soft cloth when removing from manufacturer s packaging and installing. Location of clips on the back of the headlight assembly 4. Replace the bulbs and reconnect the terminals. 5. Replace the rear panel. Bulb connector terminals Replacing headlight bulbs 4.75

FUEL, FLUIDS AND MAINTENANCE 4.0 Replacing the headlight assembly 1. There are 2 ridges on the headlight assembly. One is on the bottom, and the other is on the side. Find the corresponding grooves inside the headlight enclosure in the fender, and guide the headlight assembly s grooves into them when putting it back in place in the fender. 2. Once the headlight assembly is returned to its original position in the enclosure, pull the lever on the side of the enclosure back down to lock the headlight assembly in place. Grooved guides for headlight assembly 3. Reconnect the battery. NOTE: The clock and radio will need to be reset once the battery is reconnected. Respect all warnings from: Disconnecting the battery Booklet 4.30 Troubleshooting If the headlights do not function after bulb replacement, you may want to try the following: Check connectors in the headlight assembly. Check the headlight fuses. See: Interior fuses Booklet 4.62 Try another bulb in case the replacement was defective. If the problem persists, there may be a malfunction with the electrical system. Contact your authorized Volkswagen dealer for inspection. 4.76 Replacing headlight bulbs
